DLC18 discussion and predictions

A few things I noticed:
  • There's a zookeeper and an enrichment item in the key. That hasn't happened before. Which is interesting. Probably means nothing but... It's still interesting! Maybe just a way for them to fill space? Maybe it's a teaser image and not the actual key art?

  • The new enrichment item. Did I hear correctly that it's a "jelly cake"? I don't know what that is but... I'm intrigued! I tried googling it and the image that popped up don't look like they're animal-appropriate.

  • Given the three species that we know of (Pallas's cat, Hamadryas baboon, and markhor) I'm feeling like the theme is highlands. Breaking down where the species fall on the current meta wishlist (#21, #11, and #7 respectively) and considering where the species are from... I think there's still potential for the tree kangaroo and spectacled bear (#3 and #6, respectively). Rock hyrax would be another solid choice. It would just be a shame to get another pack that's a biome pack but really a "secret region" pack (e.g., mostly Asian species).

  • The dictionary aspect of things feels extremely wonky now. Names were removed that are part of the DLC (markhor, Hamadryas) as well as others that don't have much of a shot in this pack (sifaka, dik-dik; sifaka could arguably work but them picking the silky species would be strange).

  • It remains really unclear when the trailer will drop. But I'm guessing we'll be waiting until at least next week for the full reveal... With the pack releasing on the 15th.

I also think this is not the last one and we could have 2 more DLCs. Now I want to bring back something that someone said 5 months ago. Someone pointed out that 1 year and a half / 2 years ago a lot of people were asking for more European and Asian species as well as a farm DLC. We got them. The same person also said that at the time a lot of people were already talking of a Mountain and a Latin America pack. What if Frontier took not of all of this and are working hard to follow our requests? Pure speculation of course.
Hey if Frontier wants to make more dlc I’m still buying regardless. Despite being somewhat gloomy about things, I still love all animals and will buy the upcoming pack.

Now if Frontier is planning a Latin America pack I am all in!

If we're posting wishlists for packs, these are the two options I would love:

Mountains Pack
Pallas's cat
Hamadryas baboon
Markhor
Yellow-throated marten
Spectacled bear
Chilean flamingo
Mountain viscacha (seems memeable enough to include)

An unnamed Asian Pack
Pallas's cat
Hamadryas baboon
Markhor
Yellow-throated marten
Bar-headed goose
Himalayan monal
Siberian musk deer

In other words, gimme yellow-throated marten.

Ok I realised.
The marmot isn't the problem.
It's the pack's theme.
Mountains are just... kind of boring as a whole. They're not very varied in terms of wildlife, and there are only so many unique animals you can have in a mountain pack without inevitably running into another clone.
A yak? That's just another cow
A Markhor? As much as I love this animal, it's our 3rd goat
A spectacled bear? It's just another bear which we have plenty of already.
A marmot? It's just the most boring parts of a beaver and prairie dog combined.

But really, what other options do we have? More goats? More sheep? Another feline? There isn't any unique animal type that we don't have already (aside from the baboon that we're getting here) so these are our very limited and boring options.
At this point of the game it will be difficult to have animals that can't be compared to those already in game. Saying a mountain pack would be boring and that the wildlife in mountain isn't very varied is not really true. It depends on what you define as a mountain. I mean a goat, a cat, a baboon, possibly a bear already seems very diversified to me in one single pack. Of course we could ask for more birds but we know PZ ain't going to deliver us a 100% bird pack so I will just be happy if we have one in the DLC.

Feeling like a Zoo keeper collection pack will be the next pack after this, the 20th and final pack with Dik-Dik and the other species.

Baboon/Gelada
Snub Nosed Monkey
Tree Roo
Himalayan Monal/Golden Pheasant
Again, the baboon is the only truly unique thing we're getting
Please no.
Unlikely
I never understood the hype around the monal because, out of all possible birds, the community just picked yet another galliform. It will act very similar to the peafowl that we already have, plus aside from looking pretty it doesn't even do anything interesting... It's one of the most boring birds that we could get.

I didn't want to hate this pack, but the more I think about it the worse it gets.

What I meant is: it's all stuff we already have.
We have a goat, a ton of bears... There ARE new animals that we could get. Just not in a mountain pack.

It's funny that we are indeed getting most of the packs ideas that we discussed at some point in the past. Back in the old days when some users were completely against the idea of having a Europe pack, the idea of an Eurasia pack was often discussed. The barnayrad/petting zoo pack was also often brought up. Mountains and deserts were also mentioned a lot, and the arid pack was somehow the desert pack. Some of the other packs that we have talked about a lot and that are still pending are the Latin America pack and the Safari pack.

African Leopard is ehhhhh, I get why they added it but eh, I'll use it as a stand in for Indian leopards, probably.

The SUPER DUMPER SECRET ANIMAL PACK could have potential, depending on what the rest of the roster is.
Pallas cat is eh, again I understand why, more love for it and is more logical than the leopard, and @Britches here is happier than anyone else in the world rn, their love and joy def outshines all the hater's hate for it, so the world is balanced.
The baboon is nice, I'd prefer an olive baboon, but any monkey is better than no monkey, and also adds more rep for the Ethiopian highlands and Arabia.
The Markhor is my favorite out of the bunch so far, I'm really tempted to make a Himalayas section in my current zoo or a "Silk Road Journey" that includes them, along with the takin and pallas cat.

Animals I hope get in, as long as it's a Highlands pack, are:
  • Klipspringer
  • Hyrax
  • Tree Kangaroo (any species)
  • Chinese Giant Salamander (better be a habitat animal as well!!!)
  • Rocky Mountain Elk (or any subspecies really)
  • Himalayan Monal
Other animals I'd like but not super crazy about are:
  • Spectacled bear
  • Guanaco/Vicuña
  • Big Horn Sheep
  • Chamois
  • Tahr
  • Tibetan Antelope (this and the tahr would make the Himalayas great)
