WHY!?

I've been participating in a fairly well publicised occurrence for the past few days in Open.
I saw one probable hostile Cmdr last night just as I was about to log off. (Hollow triangle barreled across the system to get behind me) But waaay too late, I got to my carrier before the interdiction could begin.
Wasting their own time.
That's the only one in four days here.

Why are there Commanders in HIP 20567 (In Titan Indra's system) blowing our ships up? I just had time to go in and get some missiles off at Indra this evening but was attacked and destroyed by a fellow commander!? It's not unusual anywhere else but here? I'm logging off for the night already! I guess I've never met a Goid lover before..
Simple answer to this question; They are narcissists or other dark triad variations, either looking for source or plain simple pleasure from others suffering. Best option is to pity and forgive them, they've absolutely no idea as to the nature nor the depth of the karma that they are embroiled in. Many cannot differentiate between themselves and other people, it is all about them, you are there to serve their needs in the play of the tiny reflection derived from the fact that they see only themselves in life and minds mirror.

Exactly, they also say that some sacrifices are necessary in the name of the God of Kabooms.

If the game can't fix the issue, it's really not worth getting in a tizzy about, these wretched types will multiply, like an infestation or infection unless some global treatment is applied. No use the healthy cell complaining about its cancerous neighbour, for taking all the resources, it is not going to fix itself in that manor. Better off that it prey to the gods of sane development for a healthy patch.

Playing in solo or private mode is not that.

On a happy dancing note, I just made elite! Yay! ... I was kind of hoping to do it in combat first, but got caught up in a silly buying spree for the old power play toys, a lifetime supply of prismatic shields no less. Surprisingly making elite in trade in so doing... Very happy to hear that all tech is going to be available in all powers, within the new system.
Personally I'd have put them on the black market to solve that, and am kind of annoyed that I have to pledge to anyone to get tech, but hey ho it could be worse, I could need to make folk miserable in order that I enjoy myself :D

As proposed in another thread, a new Open PvE mode (Solo, PG, Open(with PvP), Open PvE) or a PvP toggle in the current Open mode would work. Most MMO style games have that. Do I want to shoot at other Cmdr's and have them shoot at me? If yes set PvP toggle ON, otherwise set it to OFF. Then alot more people would suddenly appear in 'open' so the galaxy would not seem so empty, but no one can shoot at you and you cannot shoot at them if PvP is set to OFF.

The PvP'ers can all shoot each other, and they can and will have fun with that. That way everyone wins

There's no reason for the game to "fix" this, it's not broken. We have options that completely avoid this behavior. Ignoring those options and then complaining is a player problem.

There's no fix for that.

And the answer to the OP question is simple: Because they can.
I mean fix as in a shrink can't fix a person who is anti social, they aren't broken either, however in civilised climes laws and judicial systems do, for the most part, fix the issue.

Addendum: I did mean to add that the fix should be applied by the pilots' federation to the shipboard computer firmware, by way of the monopoly that they have on said computers: It is after all; The pilots' federations reputation that is at stake!

Sir/Madam, if all partaking in this on line multiplayer video game met others with the same respect with which you have, then I am certain that the ethical foundation of the pilots federation would still remain firmly intact ... At least in systems with high security, anything goes in anarchies.

Yes it is a video game, a game of the highest pedigree, no Wolfenstein clone, hailing from the lineage of elite. Another class of game entirely, than those games to which I believe you are referring, when you state 'a video game'.

Addendum:

Do you my honourable fellow, understand what the difference is between an anarchy and a high security system? The game itself is being made a mockery of, by folk who believe themselves to be in a very small death arena, a death arena in which passers by are their own sport and entertainment, when it is in reality a high security public trade route. Worst still, it is a spot for very young pilots on the path to becoming elite, the very bedrock of the federation that has formed and protects their reputation.

Some do like to role-play, the arcade game kiddies ought to be able to respect that; Its not their fault mind you, as stated in the post that you have quoted above, the lore and in game law should make it happen.

CQC ought to be helping.

Further more, on the subject of video games, we might consider what effect an 'unreal tournament' has upon serious role-play, in one play style life is very much the centre of the modality, in the other life is cheap and the game reduced to a tuppence a shot arcade shooter.

Heck why not add some little ship icons up top right that go down as you loose lives and put the kill score count up there beside them?

That way everyone wins

Except everyone that doesn't fall into those two over-generalized camps.

the ethical foundation of the pilots federation

The Pilots' Federation:
  • allows CMDRs to run roughshod over pretty much every non-member they encounter
  • provides subsidized insurance and discount legal representation to overt criminals
  • awards combat rank for murder and trade rank for profiteering in the slave and arms trade
  • offers special discounts for those who achieve sufficient rank, irrespective of how monstrous the acts involved in reaching that rank

The ethical foundation of the Pilots' Federation is built out of manure and sits upon a mass grave. Any reasonable interpretation of it's activities, as they are depicted by Elite: Dangerous' gameplay would have it filling the role of some omnipresent evil cabal, sans any subtlety.

I didn't see Screemonster refer to any other games, just point out that this is a game. The implication being that reading too far into the behavior of someone's character or alter ego doesn't reveal the grossly presumptive attributes you've assigned to them, rather it suggests your own unwillingness or inability to separate reality from the events of a fantasy setting.

CQC is a farce.

The only entity that can make a mockery of the game is Frontier. Players play with the tools they are given in the sandbox they are provided. It took barely any time at all for the various mechanisms and placeholders Frontier implemented to cause in-game reality to deviate significantly from prior depictions of the setting. Some of this was deliberately done in the service of gameplay, but much of it was just a lack of preparation and an unwillingness to make hard decisions that could negatively impact their bottom-line. They catered to too many disparate tastes, which made it hard to do justice to any of them.

I'm not reading into anything other than scientific research on the nature of gaming environments; You are extremely quick to reach for an ad hominem, which is reinforcing my point.

I agree with you here, but also think that the issue is rooted somewhat deeper, I suspect that there has been resistance from within the actual coding team to solving this one; I'm a coder myself and am fully aware as to how easy it is for dark patterns to turn up in coding environments, due to another iteration or version of the very same thing.

Now on the subject of reality, I learned of Leibniz's description of monad just yesterday, and it fits the bill here very aptly, the notion of each level of abstraction contains a full copy of the whole, and thus the same thing reiterating upon each level in its own way. If you take issue with my perception of reality and would like to discuss philosophical matters, I'd be more than happy to oblige, though this is likely not the best place for that.

You're making sweeping assumptions about the motives of people you do not know from a one-sided account stripped of context, then armchair psycologizing a diagnosis. Referring to 'scientific research on the nature of gaming environments' to do so involves at least two logical fallacies.

I personally believe that play is utterly fundamental to existence even so far as to say the cause of existence, but feel it necessary to add that we do have an obligation to learn to play nicely, so that it remain fun and beneficial for all who are involved.
