Got a screen cap of it?
the video is "Ident_Frontier_EliteNeutral.webm" in "EDLaunch\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64\Movies"
You can just see (what I think is ) Barnard's Loop to bottom right of the planet

Get back on topic, and stay on topic. New ships and steam installations have nothing to do with the quest.

Also that's a Coriolis station, look at the triangles. It's been there for years :)
LOL... We're generally a helpful bunch here... The main topic is the hunt, the odd slight distraction and side discussion within reason is more than welcome in my view...

New ships and extracting the maximum jump distance can help in exploration if you think heading in to the black is the way to go.... So could be considered in topic....

Am I missing some rules outlined in this thread I am unaware of?

Also if someone is struggling to get the game to work to engage in the hunt (or use a quicker way of installing updates) does it cause harm in some way?

😊

Ahh nice that will probably help in finding it.
Maybe, if it exists...
@Emperor IIRC we only have Lyta Crane's (a name that itself sounds suspicious to me given the first four letters represent star types) about "the TDW stealth station"...is it really a toroid? Does it really exist? Is it really stealthy? It all sounds promising, but could it be that she made it all up based on some rumours about "a legendary group of adventurers, explorers,
investigators and treasure-hunters , the existence of which is so lacking in corroborative evidence that it is generally considered a myth" ... how come she knows so much about them? I have very little faith in any part of her codex entry!

I suspect if it exists this forgotten/hidden station might be a dodecahedral Coriolis...."In 2752 the first Coriolis station was in orbit around the world Lave. Each Coriolis station has a diameter of 1 standard kilometre" (from original Elite manual), so almost 600 years before current date; I think there should be instances of very old Coriolis that might well have been forgotten.

Cool... I knew there'd be a reason why you hadn't overlooked the toroid design.... :)

May i ask when that "notable stellar phenomenon" a.k.a. a Lagrange cloud was present in the Soontill system? Because i surely can't find one there...
The named Soontill system also doesn't have a "pale purple" brown dwarf in it either.
The image I quoted simulacrae above is from the Exploration section of the Pilot's Handbook. This section references the UC service when handing in system data. As there are no systems that I know of with a Lagrange cloud this close to a planetary body, it seems a little suspicious and potentially points to a buried secret by the in-fiction mapping service - which simulacrae had noticed.
I have yet to read the novel And Here The Wheel by John Harper but the character's description of Soontill does not reflect the named Soontill system in the game.
So either FDev bypassed the earlier lore to fit a new direction in which Soontill is effectively "archived" and not relevant, OR there is reason to suspect interference of the UC to hide the real location - which conveniently ties into FDev's exploration gameplay explained to the player in the handbook.

The Dark Wheel is a subsect of the CEP - Circle of Elite Pilots. Supposedly Soontill was used by CEP as one of their bases before it was destroyed by pirates with military weapons. The base wasn't just destroyed, the entire planet was allegedly "turned into a volcanic mess" by said pirates. That is a VERY powerful set of weaponry which would attract a lot of attention if used for pirate raids.

So that begs the question were they really pirates? or did the DW possess planet-destroying weaponry and wanted to undermine CEP's control of it? maybe they handed over such powerful weaponry to make the pirates the fall guys then secretly silenced them once the base was nuked, conveniently profiting from the sale of the relics.

The store's name is also "Garry's Reclamations" - possibly referencing the Garry pirate clan. It would make sense if these vagabonds were DW and they may have "reclaimed" relics from the CEP they thought were theirs.

Regarding the relics themselves I have been wondering...
The galnet articles point to them being Thargoid in origin and potentially a separate ethnic group from the ones we interact with.
1. Soontill was supposedly pointed out by Thargoids themselves. How did that happen??? Is this article the only reference to this happening 50 years before the present era?
2. The relics "do not quite align with known Thargoid materials" and the French historian in the article then points to varied cultures from human history. If this relates to an alternate Tharg ethnicity / culture, could this mean TDW may have access to alternate Tharg tech?
3. The earlier galnet article refers to the fraudulent Gallagher Restoration auction - circa 2985 (ie circa 1995 in our real time). Gallagher is a celtic name meaning "Foreign / eager help". I presume this was part of the early veiled clues to indicate the "restoration" of a foreign 'help' - the race of "thieves from beyond". So in this case the relics were likely a lore vehicle for reintroducing the Thargoids into the game, and perhaps TDW could also piggyback off this as well.

Dont want to spoil the book plot (it's really a good read!) but IIRC:
Robert Garry was a former federal citizen and war hero who rebelled against the military and rejoined his father's pirate gang.

His father was a former Ceeper and I seem to recall his dead wife was a daughter of the Ryder family & possibly Oberon Ryder was Robert's grandfather...its a while since I read the book and the copawlot is ill so I havent got time to search through my notes

But in the book the planet Soontill was hidden by a "space fog"...the in-game system bears little resemblance to the book's description (apart from a large planetary surface artefact, supposedly the crater from the superweapon effect). This has led some to speculate that the Soontill system itself is not the correct one, however I suspect it is more likley that FD werent willing/able to support the book description accurately. IIRC the cloud effects came in only a couple of years ago, long after book release.

Yes I completely agree with that. I'm more than happy for this topic to meander off for a few posts every now and then, as it oft does, because you never know when you might make a random connection. And it might help keep you all slightly sane... maybe... ;)

But spreading over multiple pages is a bit much :)

It was a good book - worth a read.

I feel it necessary to provide a slightly better version of the "V" I made a while back. As the one from my original post was very rough.

I will add that the name of the Book "And Here the Wheel" is from the poem "The Waste Land" by TS Eliot... the poem is (i understand) a reaction to the Great War - and it starts with the Burial of the Dead...
There is the Broader context of the "Wasteland" - I think Campbell had something to say about the idea of the Wasteland and the path of the Outlaw... But also there is the interpretation of a "Wasteland" being created as a response to the imprisonment/stealing of the child of the Nature Goddess.

The Quote:
"Here is the man with three staves, and here the Wheel" - Eliot himself in his notes said the man with three staves (a tarot card) is the Fisher King... Back to the Grail... or is it a Cauldron?

Wasteland...might be Underworld?
"Its a journey that everyone must make" (i.e.death?)
Journey->Odyssey
ED Horizons, then ED Odyssey
Major storyline based around Orion/Witchhead/Flame nebulaeetc
In the Iliad Odysseus saw Orion's soul in the Underworld

There is definitely a theme!

And looking at your diagram reminded me the CIEP stealth station from the book should be in the vicinity!!
Could it be the same as the TDW stealth station??

Mea Culpa!
But sanity, in this thread?? 😁

I am an internet luddite (it wasnt invented until I was well into my twenties) but I fully accept that I (unintentionally) overstepped the mark!

(I was overkeen because Ive had another Raxxla hypothesis floating around in my mind for a couple of weeks, and Ive been eagerly awaiting the Mandalay to get a reasonably armed (DB reported to have said "Raxxla will reveal itself ... if you are at the right place and you scan it enough...You have to be Elite." ) long-distance ship to test it out.)
