Game Discussions Star Citizen Discussion Thread v12

So, Tony Z repeated what he did with his last big project and Chris is repeating what he did with his last big project.

I'm beginning to see a pattern here :p
It was big news at the time, it even went live with Ultima Online for a few days before it was removed and the game rolled back a version due to the sheer volume of player complaints. :)

I think CiG are about to find out that players have no clue about the distinction between bugs and features.

(The things Mike was asking about constantly on his stream were Crafting / Engineering / Base Building / Master Modes - which I think Mike is going to find are actually Features, not Bugs :D )

Tony Zurovek did exactly the same thing with Ultima Online. He designed a complex economical system very similar (Identical?) to Quanta. But as usual with Tony Z and his inability to work as part of a team due to his abrasive and domineering personality, this was an overly complex system designed and built completely in isolation outside of the main game development...he spent years on it. Just like Quanta, when they tried to merge it into the Ultima game code, it utterly broke everything else and had to be discarded 🤷‍♂️
Perhaps you meant Ultima VII or VIII? (single player games). As far as I can tell Tony never worked in Ultima Online. He has exactly zero experience in delivering online mmos, never mind complex online multiplayer economy systems.

A small bit from Zyloh´s post that has not got much attention yet:

“That means dedicating all our resources to improving stability, addressing critical issues, and delivering meaningful quality-of-life updates.”

While some may think CIG cancellation of the free fly is good news and "a small step in the right direction", in fact this is the perfect opportunity for CIG to rationalize no meaningful new features or content for the foreseeable.

Players: "But, CIG, you said you would still continue adding more content in the PU and new features in parallel preview channels, in addition to focusing on bug fixing and QoL!"
CIG: "Yeah, sorry no can´t do anymore. Got to dedicate all our resources to improving stability! See you!"

Never played any of the Ultima series personally so you're more than likely correct, I just assumed it was Ultima Online rather than fact checking my own post...like that's ever been a thing for me in the first place

I just remembered the story about his involvement in the Ultima games being discussed online shortly after his SC Quanta demonstration a few years ago with the failed economic system of Ultima being the point of discussion (y)

Just watched the entire 3 hours of SC live with Benoît Beauséjour instead of just watching the 5 second comedy outtakes and smirking, interesting for sure. I get the sense from it that CR and his dumpster fire higgelty-piggelty design management tied to marketing is largely being overridden this year. I was genuinely surprised at the honesty from both Disco and Benoît throughout when discussing the game and it's development structure/faults. It's definitely worth a watch and listening to what was being discussed if you've got 3 hours to spare rather than just skipping through it looking for comedy outtakes or memes to generate...

2025 could be a make or break year for Ci~G, they're losing major streamers and coming under increasing fire from some of their bigger content creators already so canning new features tied to marketing event driven patch releases and belatedly concentrating on fixing the damned game is an unusually bold step considering Ci~G's history. I think they realise it's make or break as much as we do, if people aren't playing or streaming it because it's perpetually broken, the game and interest in it dies, hence the changes...but the proof is in the pudding as ever, we'll see :)

And you don't mean the ecology system (bunnies and deers) of Ultima Online that famously did not take player behaviour into account but was not Tony's, unless he did the work uncredited?

Could well be...but the discussion I listened to certainly centred around Tony Z and the Quanta thing 🤷‍♂️

i'd roll around naked covered with honey in a swimming pool full of fire ants before id post there, but......

Both marked as 'Open to Work' on Linkedin, and with no job lined up, suggesting they were also pushed before they were ready

i dont hardly pay attention to any of this and i saw this (from twitter)

It genuinely is a great time to be the Lead Producer of Core Tech Group of Cloud Imperium Games.

And that is why I have just left. It is time for a new adventure.
But before that I am going to take some time away to be with my family and work on some of my own personal projects (that new Nvidia Jetson Orin looks very tempting…).

Hey, you post here ;)

Yeah, we were over that like fire ants at the time. Found this weird sting at the end amusing:

I am sure that there are many folks who had little to no involvement who now want to take credit for this now it is a success.

But no matter how sunny it is on the whole, nothing there precludes a 'pushed, NDAed, and putting a positive spin on it' scenario ¯\(ツ)/¯

Not saying it's definitely the case for him. But I am saying that: The dev who claimed the top brass leavers were made redundant + NDAed just got his prediction proved out. (Elliott Chin leaving, predicted back in January). So the way I see it, there's honey smeared all over this thing for the thread ;)

Oh hell yeah I'm gonna skim through it properly.

But it'll still be for the lols. Because ultimately the chagrin don't mean much. The words don't mean much. The actions do.

The actions to date have left us with these brass tacks:

So essentially they're focusing on fixing:
  • Missions
  • Instanced hangars
  • Transit
  • Character corruption
  • Inventory persistence
  • Quantum travel
  • Load times.
With a side eye on...
  • Invulnerable AI & players
  • Freight elevators
  • Physics collision fails
  • Ships resetting (on server boundaries)
  • Mineables not loading
  • 'And more...'
Hard to think of anything that's not on the list...

(Although Server Meshing lurks large in the background ;))

And there are two problems with the monthly fixathon they're floating:

  • That's too many things for them to make a meaningful dent in. (And they've notably tried to fix a bunch of them before). Odds on they're mainly going to get tied up in the spaghetti of these interrelated issues.
  • As Fact points out, they're still adding new game-befuddling additions, months after CR's initial decree. (And they know full well that flash-in-the-pan newness is a big part of what draws people back to SC. And lord knows they need those concurrencies if they want to convince Calders types that the PU is a going concern). 3 rounds of glitchy-fixies in, and one new ship later, and the community pitchforks will likely be back out to glimmer in the firelight. 6 rounds later, CIG will port some broken monstrosity from its testing tier into the PU, to dance for everyone's amusement...

I really don't think it's crazy sceptical to say: Wake me in a year, when nothing will be that different, but Lando will have a new reason for why...

Only loosely related, because scummy companies, but EA made Sims 4 free (base game), so me and the kids grabbed it. Always said i would never give EA money, haven't given them money in like 20 years or something, but free? Hell yeah, who needs the DLCs anyway when you can mod it?

Son immediately downloaded the Wicked Whims mod... perv!

LOL, CIG spent untold effort making everything persist, then aggressively clean up persisted items.

More Tony/Quanta discussion

While I understand that NPCs may be hard to implement

No! They are not hard to implement. Games have been implementing NPCs with at least half a brain for decades now. I was writing scripts for Neverwinter Nights 2 NPCs almost 20 years ago, giving them schedules, reacting to players, etc, and it wasn't really mega complicated code. Just a bunch of conditions and triggers.

ChatJ3PT living in their own world again

Nothing about the vision for 1.0 is a compromise. It's the original vision with even more on top of it, so it's delivering on more than the original vision making it the complete opposite of a compromise.

LOL

Hell, he's all over that thread trying to recon history and defend CIG.

I really don't know where some of you get off just making things up and misrepresenting the actual plans.

Says the man who constantly does that.

Someone pushes back

And beyond that, you have a fundamental problem with your attitude. The way you interact with people is just bottom-tier. You don’t debate, you don’t argue in good faith—you just assume everyone who disagrees with you is either too stupid to understand, willfully misrepresenting things, or acting with some shady ulterior motive. It’s exhausting. It doesn’t strengthen your position, it just makes it unbearable to engage with you.

But you? You don’t leave room for that. You don’t argue, you accuse. You don’t discuss, you attack. And that’s why talking to you isn’t a debate—it’s a chore. Instead of engaging with what people are actually saying, you immediately assume bad faith and start swinging wildly. And the worst part? It completely undermines whatever valid points you do have. No one wants to sift through layers of hostility and paranoia just to maybe find something worthwhile in what you’re saying.

And does he acknlowedge any of this or say he could do better engaging with people?

You make very clear that you are disregarding all evidence and information available in favour of feelings and vitriol. Which makes it pointless engaging with you.

What you said was false and actively contradicting what they said and their plans and you have nothing with any substance to back up or justify it. You're making excuses and deflecting with emotionally driven arguments to try and cover for that but it is very clear to see.

Just the same old deflect, distract and discredit at this point with all of you. Nothing constructive, very little that's accurate, very little regard for the truth and nothing of substance.

Ah, no, same old attitude.

Overall, this is the saltiest i've seen Spectrum ever.
