Hot takes for planet zoo

Bears are the most overrepresented animal family in game! Its really annoying.
Yet... because of OCD reasons I would still like to see the ABB...
How I would do the final bear roster...
  • Sloth Bear
  • Grizzly Bear
  • European Brown Bear
  • Asiatic Black Bear
  • American Black Bear
  • Panda

If the black bear was added the bears would still feel pretty inclomplete tbh since the euro brown would still be missing. Thats one of, if not the most common on in captivity and pretty important to the region.

Not that i really want either really

I'm even less generous than that. These would be my ideal bear roster:
  • Polar Bear
  • American Black Bear
  • Spectacled Bear
  • Panda Bear

Two brown bears that are basically the same species but not the spectacled bear that is more unique in a lot of ways? If i have sacrifice something there would be the EEB and just get a generic brown bear.

Sad hot take that i wish was different:

Im pretty sure the next pack will be a pretty big dissapointment. Everyone counting on the focus being on underrepresented groups is setting themselves up for disapointment
Even if we get the south america revisit that everyone wants i really doubt its gonna be a good pack.
The way that I prepare myself for new packs is to not set up some expectations before they announce it.

If the Bush dog would be added:
My Reaction would be so happy compared to the community...
Frontier SA Pack
  • Tufted Capuchin
  • White-tailed Deer
  • American Flamingo
  • Tamandua
  • Ocelot
  • Guanaco
  • Bush Dog/Tayra
I'd be happy with that pack but sad for the community.
How I'd do it: Latin America Animal Pack
  • Bush Dog
    • Alternatives: Ocelot, Coyote, or Margay
  • Tamandua
    • Alternative: Screaming Hairy Armadillo
  • Greater Rhea
    • Alternative: American Flamingo
  • EITHER the Geoffrey's Spider Monkey, Black Howler Monkey, or maybe the Squirrel Monkey . . . just any New World monkey
  • Brazilian Porcupine
    • Alternatives: Patagonian Mara or Agouti
  • Coatimundi
    • Alternative: Kinkajou
  • Black Caiman
    • Alternative: Orinoco Crocodile
  • Exhibit: Red-Bellied Piranha OR WE: Macaws

So I am going to start a weekly hot take, with this being the first, 90% of the time they will be planet zoo/animal related but there might occasionally be something more broad. You can just give a opinion on the subject, even if you don't think you have a hot take, though they are preferred. So here it is.

What is a animal that was in the top that you felt was overrated. Any animal currently not in the game, like the Walrus or Secretary Bird will not count, only animals that have been already added. Here is your options

Tasmanian Devil
Capybara
Maned Wolf
African Crested Porcupine
Przewalski's Horse
Emu
Wolverine
Red River Hog
Lar Gibbon
Fossa
Generic (Amur) leopard
Common Wombat
Takin
North Island Brown Kiwi
Caracal
Dromedary
Platypus
Red Fox
Highland Cow
Bennett’s Wallaby
Saiga
White Rhino
Meerkat
Eurasian Lynx
Red Deer
Asian Small-clawed Otter
Raccoon
Nine-Banded Armadillo
Wild Boar
Alpine Ibex
Fennec Fox
Black Rhino
Addax
Moose
Brown-Throated Three-Toed Sloth
California Sea Lion
Collared Peccary
Striped Hyena
Puma
Sloth Bear
Mute Swan
North American Beaver
Somali Wild Donkey
American Alligator
Highland Cow
Hamadryas Baboon
Andean Bear
Pallas Cat
Markhor

So which animal is overrated to you, you can still like this animal but if you feel it was overhyped then say why. I will start, I love the addax but why was it so popular then when added it was forgotten instantly, it is was so werid, so yeah it's both overrated and underrated.

None of these seemed like bad picks to me, but I didn't understand why some were in top spots.
  • Tasmanian Devil: It's creepy and has very little zoo presence outside of Australia. I don't think it was a bad pick, but I could not understand why it was so popular for so long. It's good for the Australian players and representing taxa, but it was so high. Top ten or twenty would have made sense. It has several appealing qualities, but it seemed like a weird number one. I've softened to them after seeing one in person, though.
  • Amur Leopard: I was fine without leopards and was mainly waiting for small cats. Also, the subspecies choice seemed a bit odd since its foilage tags wouldn't line up with the bulk of leopards' range. That isn't a problem anymore, and I can see value in both. Still, I'd probably trade both leopards for a serval and an ocelot.
  • Fossa: I had no idea what this animal was until I got here. I like it a bit more after seeing one in person. The ring-tailed vontsira was my favorite option for a Madagascar civet, which seemed kind of niche. It's pretty cool, but the level of hype was strange to me.
  • Black Rhino: I still think this animal was one of the most redundant additions, but the people who wanted it are holding firm. It's a good conservation species, so I'm fine with it.
  • Takin: I was mostly upset we didn't get the markhor. It's still pretty good for an ungulate, but I was surprised they were about tied.
  • Saiga: I like it with its funny nose, but it seemed weird that it was neck and neck with the blackbuck. A lot of people were angry about getting the saiga as the Asian antelope instead like it should have been obvious to Frontier. It was one of the most popular antelopes, but I think it must have been a little overrated for people to get so upset.
  • Hamadryas Baboon: I was surprised it was the number one monkey. South American monkeys are less creepy, common, and useful. It definitely made sense in the top 10; baboons are pretty basic as far as primates go. I just figured a South American species would be more popular. I'm glad we finally got baboons, though.
These seemed weird at the time, but they've grown on me a lot.
  • Binturong: I didn't know what this animal was, but now I think it's awesome.
  • American Alligator: I wasn't really on the forums too much at the time, but I was surprised to find out later that this was a top pick. I'd figured more people would want the ZT1&2 set, including the moose, cougar, bighorn sheep, sea lion, black bear, beaver, and wolverine. I guess I got used to only 1 crocodilian per game.
  • Sun Bear: I didn't know that this bear existed before I got here. I was surprised to learn later that it was the most requested bear at the time.
Underrated gems:
  • Prairie Dog: I think this was the least wishlist-popular animal at the time of its inclusion, but I'm glad it's getting more love now. I thought it had a good chance to be an easier and cheaper alternative to the meerkat, and I was not disappointed.
  • Mute Swan: Given how the hype for it dwarfed that for the super-popular wolverine, I'd say this bird was definitely underrated. Hopefully, we'll get more waterfowl, especially the Mandarin, mallard, white-faced whistling duck, and black swan.
  • Striped Skunk: Maybe the timing was the issue? I still think it's a great taxon pick, is cute, and has great interspecies enrichment combos. I think those who wanted to build international NA sections were going to need more than just the raccoon. As I recall, it was somewhere in the top 75-50.
  • Wisent: It seemed very important to many people, so I would call it underrated.
  • Platypus: It was underrated on the wishlist, probably because it didn't seem possible. Hopefully, my impossibly tiny monkeys will find their way into PZ, too.
  • Dhole, Dingo, and esp. Arctic Wolf: Having a dog for around the world is nice. While not top picks for me, they were barely requested or got a lot of undeserved hate. I love the wolf.

I agree about some of your options, but do have arrangements for some. The Tasmanian Devil is is probably well-known from a certain cartoon, I could definitely see it being a top ten, though number 1 was a bit weird. As for the leopard, you have to remember that it was generic leopard that everyone was voting for, so it's popularity made sense, and amur was just most commonin zoos. Anyway great takes
