Newcomer / Intro What are you up to?

A man jumps into a Federal Corvette. He hasn't flown it for ages and thinks a visit to the nearest CNB might be fun. What could possibly go wrong?

I'll tell you...

The first thing was that I remembered that these ships don't handle like the Mandalay I've been in for ages. The second thing was that I couldn't turn it quick enough to avoid the nearby star: yes, I was that close. The third thing was integrity that got compromised and the sudden warming of the 'pit as I realised I wasn't wearing my factor 5,000.

Still, after putting out the dashboard fire with my bare hands, I was, at least, not being told to eject, eject, eject.

The FC was quite near so I decided that I'd get repaired before trying again. Le sigh.

Almost immediately, I get a comms message saying "High value target acquired". They couldn't mean little old me, surely...

Oh, yes they did and i was given a prompt interdiction. I surrendered as all good boys do. However, I was being shown no mercy and was eating hot lazerz.

Deploying weapons. I'm just not having this.

Eat MY lasers you bullying scum! Ha! There go your shields, rat bag! Now these are my rotating boom sticks!

Then I saw who I was shooting at:

My next few shots missed as I thought of his mum.

Eventually, he went bang.

What was odd is that it "awarded" me 400CR. Is this the nerf bat hitting combat?

I'm heading in a bee-line back to the bubble.

The question I am asking myself is: should I pursue a life in ship combat to hit Elite V in that discipline? Currently Elite I so it would an awful long term goal. And I don't think I can cope with any more grinding.

Think I just answered my own question :D
The only time I really think about rank grind in any discipline is when considering whether to deploy my fighter and have her nick XP of me. Other than that, I'm mostly happy to let it happen naturally.

Mostly..
What I would / will do though if the opportunity arises sometime in the future is this...I've got a number of outdoor world systems and large 'interesting' systems that I've first discovered that are starting out at least 2000ly out from the bubble. I might consider claiming those systems if there are any other player claimed or being claimed systems in those areas. I'll deal with the moral aspects of that if and when the situation arises. I don't imagine that situation is going to present itself anytime soon though.;)...but rightly or wrongly I feel that at least I have a valid reason for doing that. Other players might disagree. 🤷‍♂️
I'm not sure why you'd consider that to be a moral question. It seems very reasonable that you'd want to colonise a system you've discovered. I'm sure that's what 99.99% of people taking part would like to do.

Those pilots always get some money from you if you've hired them. Even if they only hang out at the concourse bar waiting for you to ask them to join you on the ship.

I was recently promoted to BARON in the Empire. "Oh Goodie!" I thought - I'll go grab that Imperial Cutter.
But After flying it around it felt Lumbersome on the roll, pitch and yaw.
I have truly been spoiled by the super manouvrerability of the Mandalay and I can't see myself flying any of my other ships for a while.

I beleve that this new generation of ships, the Mandalay, the Cobra 5 and the upcoming Corsair will all put the older ships to shame in terms of manouvering.
So while I aspired to reach rank enough to obain the Corvette and the Imperial Cutter, I feel I may be disappointed and the next ships I get may well be the Cobra 5 and the Corsair

Perhaps we'll get a new engineer that provides modifications to vastly improve the manoeuvrability of the "old" ships.

Just 123,000 CMM composites per ship.

I presume you didn’t get round to running a Kill Warrant Scanner on them, it is pretty low for an Elite Mamba if they were an actual pirate so maybe the warrant was because of parking offences scratching someone’s paint due to poor trigger discipline.

I don’t see it to be honest I mean how much did Ford update/uprate the Cortina after they had launched the Sierra?
Just 123,000 CMM composites per ship.
It won’t be those now they have buffed the supply so much.

Hi All :)

I'm not sure why you'd consider that to be a moral question. It seems very reasonable that you'd want to colonise a system you've discovered. I'm sure that's what 99.99% of people taking part would like to do.

Well...🤔...it's still a case of using another players progress to eventually get to the system you want to claim?... but looking at it another way, that's all that will be out there I suppose, (player built systems). so...🤷‍♂️... Unless Frontier introduce some more of their own systems to start the player claims off again in other areas, especially in those Col 70 permit locked systems etc. ;)

There's no way though now I would system hop (Using the claim approach of building an Outpost then moving on to the next system) to travel over 1500ly to my first discovered and first desired system. My recent experience of collecting and supplying commodities for one or two initial stations was mind numbing enough. Collecting and delivering to all those intermediate Outposts (roughly 100 systems?) I know would drive me insane! 🤪...😅
Anyhow, as I implied earlier, I doubt another players finished stations would be anywhere near where I wanted to go, so I'll have to obviously keep my eye on how the system claims progress in the future, just in case they do ;).

Those pilots always get some money from you if you've hired them. Even if they only hang out at the concourse bar waiting for you to ask them to join you on the ship.

I did try this feature quite a while back when I first bought a carrier. I hired 2 pilots but they kept getting destroyed!...and when I didn't use them their wages were eating into (back then) my relatively small bank balance. I usually ended up fighting off the pirates by myself anyway. ... :D

The Cutter when fully engineered (all core modules) and carrying a heavy shield generator, shield boosters and an SCO drive is imho a great trade ship. It's obviously something you need to personally experience though, and yes, there's compromises involved compared to other ships. If you arm it to the teeth with fully engineered weapons npc pirate encounters are fairly easily shrugged off, or if you choose you can engage them. It's a trade ship with a lot of potential clout. I personally prefer this for my 'serious' trade missions as I tend to stack them for maximum profits per the usually two way one system travel.
It handles like a whale, but you can engineer a respectable boost speed, and ramming the target tends to dent a pirates shields quite well! :D even the Deadly and Elite Anacondas / Type10's.
I use engineered flak cannons as part of my armament and that also works well for close up combat. It's a ship that not everybody likes because of it's poor manoeuvrability, compared to other ships, but piloting it in Solo mode it does the job, with a respectable cargo space too. You just have to be aware of it's limitations, large landing pads is one of them. Also don't forget a fully engineered Cutter will set you back roughly 35 -40 million in a re-buy possibly. 😬

Just as a side note....does anybody here use a Type10 regularly for trading?... and if so what's your preferred build specs. for an armed shielded trader?
I've already got one partly engineered btw. but I've not really used it for anything.

Perhaps we'll get a new engineer that provides modifications to vastly improve the manoeuvrability of the "old" ships.

Just 123,000 CMM composites per ship.

....I'm feeling ill just thinking about it! :ROFLMAO:
I wish instead the engineer would exchange that manoeuvrability mod for some of my old class 5 engineered drives, plus some of my other outdated engineered modules.

What am I doing....As I mentioned earlier, I'm just on the outer edges of the 'new' bubble. I spotted a player / commander heading out away from the crowded player claimed system areas in what obviously looked like a solo attempt. The players latest system (I presume) from my 'investigation' needed roughly 65% more commodities to completion, so I delivered about 500t of steel and 200t of titanium I was carrying on my carrier. I then jumped the carrier to another area about 800ly away. There's still quite a few systems (in that area) that are obviously not going to be finished by the time their timer runs out, so I can't really see the point of that myself, unless it's just to stop other players from claiming them maybe?
I'm now heading back in to the main core of the bubble as I've just noticed (forgotten) I've still got two trade missions to complete (9 hrs left on the timer).

Jack :)

I think you forgot two ships in your list. They aren't as nimble as the Mandalay, sure, but for what they are, they are really nice to fly. I definitely wouldn't want to miss my Imperial Loadstar or the Stormbringer.
But I'll still buy the other ships to complete the collection.

I've only owned 3 ships max and only use two, my Krait Mk II and my Anaconda. I have a Vulture I can't bring myself to sell. I flew it to Colonia when I first got out of the protected area, I was tired of getting ganked, the gankers would loiter around Farseer's base.

I have 19 ships, I use 4. I have a range of pew pew ships, most of which don't have weapons. I have an anaconda, just to remind me not to buy one (sorry I know some people like it, I just don't understand why). :)

My experience with Farseers was completely different, I took all of my early ships there multiple times, expected to be pirated , but never was (missed opportunity for the pirates, I am a very easy target).

This snowy Asteroid station when I captured the image is "Aretis Sector ZF-W B2-3 Altamira cave" should you wish to see it for yourselves.
Situated just inside the ring of a gas giant

Thanks! Asteroid stations are my favourite but I particularly love these new Hoth bases. Although there's a little misspelling. It's Arietis so I was a little confused at first.

That's an iffy tower to land next to though. I could barely see anything.

I don't mind the loss of money. It's the XP I'm concerned about. Plus I hired her as a newb so I don't have to pay her much. I run a tight slave ship round here.

Ooooh, I see the point you're making. I'd be shocked if anyone here thought it was ethically wrong to snag a system someone was branching near.

Even if they were specifically heading to that system I'd still make the claim. I got there first, innit?

What I think is more questionable is the second thing you mentioned. Doing the bare minimum in a string of systems and just letting them rot is a valid issue I've seen brought up here.
