DLC20 Discussion (maybe, but why not?)

Sometimes, it's great to be wrong! Hah. A few thoughts on the pack content:
  • Definitely feels like an Indian pack to me based on the animals and architecture which has me more excited than the Americas pack but not by much. The scenery has potential! I just hope they avoid another "flag" snafu...

  • The honey badger looks awesome! Both the badger and macaque are strong, versatile additions. I can take or leave the elephant but... I'm also pretty excited to see what a Frontier 2025 elephant looks like compared to the base game.

  • The thing people keep calling a "rat" is probably just a baby macaque. My heart wants it to be another small mammal (mongoose), though.

  • Blackbuck feels like a shoe-in on the roster. I'm hesitant to guess on anything else just because of all the different options... I just hope it's not loaded with ungulates like some speculation I'm seeing. Assuming we've got the correct theme, bring on the birds and small mammals!
Not to be a downer, but I don't think this necessarily means we're on track for more packs this year. They did the same the same thing with the final JWE2 pack and that was the end. I think it mostly depends on other games. We may be getting this because JWE3 is delayed and they aren't ready to roll out PC2 DLC. But if JWE3 is dropping later in the summer and PC2 is gonna start in with DLC come fall? This could be it.

Obviously, I'd hope things keep going but there's too many factors to say for sure in any direction.

Im definitely thinking India and just hoping the elephants are there for vibes. Here's what I want lol:
1. Honey Badger
2. Lion-Tailed Macaque
3. Gaur
4. Blackbuck
5. Fishing Cat
6. Axis Deer
7. Himalayan Monal
8. King Cobra

But I really hope its a general Asia theme. Don't think its likely though.

But hey, its seems like we may be getting 4 packs this year! I guess Frontier really meant what they said with "more to come" and us "being happy"

Unfortunately, I feel like we're looking at a new Asian elephant.
My reasoning for this stems from how key arts are usually structured.
All of the key arts for animal packs so far (with the only exceptions of Southeast Asia and Americas) follow the same format: a large animal up front, which is the headliner, and two more animals in the distance being shown through silhouettes. Even Zookeeper follows this style: the Pallas Cat is the headliner, while markhor and baboon are depicted as little more than silhouettes.
Now, of course Americas changed the format by having one headliner, one silhouette, and 3 additional animals shown through the hanging decorations. In total, this key art depicts 5 animals.

If this new upcoming DLC didn't include elephants, then we'd be looking at our first ever key art with only two animals... Which isn't impossible, but it's definitely weird; it's only made weirder by the fact that, for the first time, they'd be including an animal that isn't part of the pack on the key art, which has never happened before.

...And assuming the last few patterns hold they'll be announcing this in the second week of June and it'll drop on the 17th which is wildly soon! The way they presented it this time was different but I see no reason why they would buck the teaser trend. This is definitely coming sooner than October, that's for sure... LOL

eh Im actually quite happy with the cotw map 19 animals and a full class set will make it one of the most diverse maps in the game and its on track to have the most unique animals to. I was hoping for either a british colombia or high arctic map but for the location the roster looks great and pinnipeds were never going to come anyways they just dont fit a game where you cant even swim.
i actually don't have much of a opinion on COTW new map, beaver seens exciting but the rest feels like more of the same, and i already have Yukon among my favorites, so another snow map with bisons isn't much of a deal. Though i don't think any map will excit me as much as Sundapartan did.

I agree. JWE2 last pack released earlier than usual for them to wrap up before Planet Coaster 2 launched later on in the year. I could see them wrapping DLCs for PZ early this year in anticipation of JWE3 later 2025 which we now know is still coming this year.

Key art is usually pretty transparent about its contents. I don't see why this time it'd have some weird deception to make the contents looks less appealing than they actually are
Looking back at the Zookeepers key-art I think you're being too black-and-white about this.

For instance, the lanterns that are shown rather prominently ended up being the ingame ones and according to your logic here they could only have been brand new ones because else it was a deception. Same goes for the other base game pieces we recognized. Sure, you could argue that there's a distinction between an animal and scenery pieces; but given that the new style of animal packs feature scenery as well it would be just as deceptive as you call it and the distinction between scenery and animals becomes arbitrary.

I honestly wouldn't mind a new elephant but I'm still not of the opinion that we can completely rule out that this isn't just them using base game assets as a form of place making just like they did with various items for the Zookeepers keyart. It's different than the Americas pack to me at least, where the flamingo was part of the scenery piece and the ingame flamingo species did not fit the aesthetic of the rest of the key art at all.

for the first time, they'd be including an animal that isn't part of the pack on the key art, which has never happened before.
As other people pointed out, Arctic did so already. I say it's fair to say that this is only one instance; but it isn't something that has never happened before.

They added to the vibe because the pack was named after them 😭 I don't think its the same case here
Well if this pack ends up being an Indian Animal Pack (which I personally think it is), I think this does work as a way to cement it. The same way a Chinese Animal Pack could have giant panda in the background.

Arctic Pack had base game bison in it just for the vibes. I really hope these elephants are the equivalent of that.

The thing is that if we are indeed getting another elephant, it cannot be an India pack because we already have the specific Indian elephant. So if we are getting a Sri Lankan or Bornean or Sumatran elephant, this is not an India pack.
It'd be named "South Asia" to be inclusive. But that is suspiciously close to the already-existing "Southeast Asia animal pack" so maybe they'll name it something completely different to avoid confusion. Or maybe they solve the problem entirely by not making a DLC elephant!

Here's how I would rank potential picks. There's no merit to "good" and "bad" as it's based on what animals I like or what would fit any of my current projects.

Realistic bad picks: Indian Leoapard, Golden Jackal, Jungle Cat, Indian Wolf, Mugger Crocodile, Chinkara Gazelle, Smooth-Coated Otter, Tibetan Fox

Unrealistic bad picks: Rhesus Macaque (or any other macaque species), Siberian Ibex, Hoolock Gibbon, Indian Porcupine

Boring neutral picks: Asiatic Lion, Himalayan Serow, Sambar, Chital, Barashinga, Gaur, Yak

Fun neutral picks: Nilgai, Great Indian Bustard, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Golden Langur, Slow Loris, Indian Pangolin, Pygmy Hog, Fishing Cat

Realistic good picks: Blackbuck, Red Muntjac, Hanuman Langur, Himalayan Musk Deer, Hog Deer, Himalayan Marmot, Himalayan Monal, Indian Gray Mongoose, Four-Horned Antelope, Sarus Crane, Temminick's Tragopan

Unrealisitic good picks: Yellow Throated Marten, Dalmatian Pelican, Eurasian Spoonbill, Painted Stork, Eurasian Otter, Bar Headed Goose
