Oculus Rift and colours in Elite Dangerous thread

I found changing to green made the text far more pleasant to read if not actually easier ( somewhat a subjective thing I think )

There are now two dedicated E:D threads about HUD colour changing and a web page that allows you to dynamically test out different colour matrices.

Main HUD Colour thread is Here
HUD Colour Theme Editor thread is Here

Finally the HUD Colour Theme Editor webpage is here

It's not just subjective. Check out pentile oled displays and it makes sense. For every red and blue pixel there are two green ones.
This is the huge downside of these displays. They are used because they allow low persistence. Otherwise LCD with even distributed rgb pixels would be better.

Was very excited for this and tried it out last night. Didn't see much of a difference in readability except that the text in the comms panel was all but unreadable after the change. I couldn't stand the lack of contrast between different items in the HUD and the reversing of some colors. So I've gone back to amber and am glad I did. I actually appreciate how "not bad" amber was after trying this. Now, if FD would implement an option set that would allow you to tweak the individual colors of different items in the hud it might work.

As people have noticed this method doesn't work fully which is why it's not an available or supported option. After release we hope to be able to devote some more effort into this for a proper solution.

Soon......... :)

Am going to wait for an official fix... I'm too stupid to have friendlies turn to red! It would not end well ... :p

Please see the other threads on this forum ( check out my previous post above) for better colour schemes and try out the dynamic Colour Matrix editor link as you can tweak the values to whatever you want. I've not tried the colour scheme from the reddit post, but all the others i've tried have looked fine in the Rift, but some care needs to be taken so as to not lose green/red or reverse them.

While there are more green pixels, I still think the actual readability improvements will be subjective based on person. I agree it looks far better for me, but I didn't want people to just assume it would make everything perfect.

Avoid colours that have red in it for the best legibility as the arrangement of the sub pixels makes the red very distracting (unless you go pure red). Basically cyan or green is best (with pure blue you loose the extra resolution that the green provides).

People have reported blue is easier to read too. I don't think there are as many blue pixels as green, so it's not just the total number of pixels. I figure it also has to due with the chromatic aberration in the lenses / chromatic aberration compensation in the display. Blue / green light refracts less than red light, so there's less distortion at these colors.

Easier to read text - Selectable colour scheme for the Dash?

Dearest Devs

Something that would really help the Rift community (and the readability of the text in the cockpit using the DK2) would be the ability to change dash colours as a setting within the options *without* affecting the radar (enemies showing green, etc).....

Pretty please!!

Thanks

Nosh

PS - I changed mine a couple of upgrades ago to green and the difference was staggering......

Hoping for this as well.
Also, alot of color-blind folks have a very hard time with the overall red scheme. A teal-blue-magenta interface would be fantastic on some ships.

In your GraphicsConfiguration.xml (located in the same place as EliteDangerous32.exe), search for <GUIColour>. In the <Default> section, replace the MatrixRed, Green and Blue with with this:

<MatrixRed> -1, 1, 0 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> 1, -1, 1 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> -1, 0, 1 </MatrixBlue>

Its what I'm using in the rift. Helps a lot. :)

Yeah I hope Frontier add the ability to select GUI Colour Scheme soon, will make experimenting and testing much easier.

As far as I can tell using a predominantly green GUI make it far more readable, both clearer and cleaner. I tried a blue version but found most text had a slight blue haze around it that made it looked blurred.

Tried green and it makes a huge difference to me, but the scanner then sucks (as per OP I guess) so gone back to orange.

This is the real shame. as you say green makes a huge difference to text and as Rift users thats all we really need, its just a shame that this colour matrix is applied globally to everything. If Frontier could just separate text from other UI elements it would be a great starting point for the future.

I'm still playing with the colour matrix, trying to see if some middle ground can be reached as I really prefer the green text, it feels so much sharper and cleaner, but many of the proposed colour schemes then end up changing pure red to green ( e.g. when comparing component values that are worse than the currently installed ones) which is unhelpful. Not sure if its possible to create a balanced version, so might have to hope that Frontier put some more work into this themselves.

Someone posted this scheme. Haven't tried it myself but it states enemies are still in red after the change. It looks good in the pictures.

(Terminal Green)
<MatrixRed> 0.18, 0, -1 </MatrixRed>
<MatrixGreen> -1, 1, -1 </MatrixGreen>
<MatrixBlue> 0.17, 0.31, 1 </MatrixBlue>

It really makes a huge diffrence on the Text :) no need any more to get the Head in the UI Elements :D

And hope Frontier will Split the Color Options only for Text and so.

If you look at the feedback from rift users, you would bet it is the top gripe about playing ED with the DK2......

...may be worth a poll? ;)

My guess is Frontier is aware of the suggestion, and maybe even on the way to implementing it. It's a no brainer, just a question of priorities.

I've been involved with enough betas to know really good ideas like this are usually already in the pipe-line, and just need to go through development and testing.

That said, a little "publicity" wouldn't hurt.

+1 for in-game settings for UI colour! Please Frontier, be so kind to us :)
P.S. 3D Vision support also GREATLY welcome ;)
