This game is not for you.

People seem to get "this game is not for you" sometimes when they dare suggest that anything might not be perfect the way it already is. Sometimes that might be because they want an arcade space shooter, in which case it's a fair enough comment but at other times it sounds like "FD can't ever be wrong, their vision shouldn't be questioned."

This is why it's situational. Depends what's being said, how it's being said, and how it's being responded to.

As I have just written in another thread, there are two types of complaint.

1) Constructive criticism - This helps pinpoint issues. Good constructive criticism even offers (potential) solutions.
2) Destructive criticism - This is just complaining and moaning and serves no useful purpose other than to let the person vent steam.

I applaud those who come on here and offer constructive criticism (like you have, OP) as this is what allows a free debate of ideas and hopefully offers solutions, workaround and ideas to move the game forwards.

I have zero time for those that come on here to and moan. To those people I say "this game is not for you, move along."

I agree, I made a pretty flippant hungover agreement with some constructive criticism, and was told this game isn't for me. I wouldn't have sunk over 100 hours into it, be playing it now, or posting here if I wasn't totally in love with this game, but it's far from perfect in my opinion, and simply because I agree with or make a suggestion doesn't mean anyone else can decide what's for me.

At the end of the day it's all about debate, and those who think Frontier's word is the only word are fools. I admit, I'm too young to be from the Elite days, so I can only gather what the vision is from other people, but that doesn't mean my opinion is worth any less. There seems to be a lot of polar opposites on this forum, we go from "too hard" one day to "too easy" the next, with not so much discussion as to WHY. When I offer suggestions I'm not offering them because I think it's the best way, but because perhaps it's something Frontier simply haven't thought about, and if they agree it improves the game, without too much work, why not do it?

Just to reiterate what others already said because I really really like to read my own words : the answer "this game is (probably) not for you" is a sympathetic answer to "suggestions" that are just not compatible with Elite's concept. Some examples :

* "I love the game but it really need corporations and guild halls and the economy bits that go with it" ... this one might perhaps happen some day, but the focus of Elite is on a single player "blazing his own trail", not "Corporations amassing wealth". If you really really need corporations and guilds then you're most probably better off in another game.

* "Supercruise/docking/frameshift/[add flight mechanic here] is completely boring and should be, at worst shortened or made completely optional" ... nope... not going to happen as far as I can tell. Flying your spaceship and experiencing the vastness of space is at the core of Elite. You take it away and you lose at least half the game. I get it that you find those aspects boring and would like to gamble on the market as fast as possible, if feasable without having to use your ship. NOthing wrong with it, but you will definitely not be happy in Elite. There are many games who cater to your wishes, so go play those. You will be happier and we can keep doing all the stuff you find boring but we actually enjoy. Just a matter of taste and personal preferences.

* "This is no MMO. People should be forced to congregate and talk to each other and play open!" ... Not going to happen neither. E : D is, by definition :It has a (considering its age and its mechanics) a massive amount of players and they actually always play online together (even those who play solo). But again, the focus of the game is on single pilots, not groups or guilds or corporations, and it's about the vastness of space. It's *very* nice to see other players (personally I love it when I get to a system or a station and there are other players flying around, *EVEN IF I RARELY SPEAK TO THEM*), but the game works like a single player game for all that it matters. and it is *GOOD* and innovative. IF you don't like that aspect then, probably, the game is not for you. No problem. I'm sure you will find a game that suits you.

there are others, but it's christmas and family matters are more important ... :p

See, you'd think people could decide for themselves, but after 15 years working with the public - in various ways and capacities, once you get more than 5 people in to 1 thing, they lose the ability to think clearly and act with some weird mob mentality.

Anyway...

Why come to Elite and demand the game be made more like EVE ?
Why come to Elite and demand the game be made more like Star Citizen ?
Why come to Elite and demand the game be made more like [Insert whatever game title you wish] ?

Here is a hint, those games all ready exist - go and play them.

A lot of people gave up money to a Kickstarter project for a remake of Elite - not a remake of EVE or SC or any other game. They paid for Elite, this is Elite.... see where this going yet ?
(Side note, Thank you KS backers - I only found out about this game in November, so all KS backers, I salute you - my wife, not so happy )

Now, if people can suggest new features or ideas without demanding the game be more like [who ever] .. then we can get somewhere and help improve / evolve the game. Just don't keep going on about how [who ever] does [what ever] better - if they do it so well, then why be here !?!?!?!?

TL : DR;

Don't like the game, go to one you do like - simple.
Wanting the game to grow and improve and incorporate more of the ddf features so it will be more than barely meeting the criteria to be classified feature complete is truely loving the franchise because in the end it guarantees longevity and continued success. This as opposed to promoting, stagnation, simplification and posi-trolling whilst driving members of our community away with the "this game is not for you" replies which leads to nothing good and are not helping in any way shape of form. Maybe you should read the DDF to get a clearer view of what the game is supposed to look like. You had enough time since NOVEMBER to get up to speed lol, oh! and my regards to your wife ;)

ho ho ho!

+1 from me for this post, this game is awsome and all should be thankfull to play it i.e. look at the star citizen scam..... you think they'll ever see the game realeased? and elite did it with less than 2 mill, star citizen almost 60 mill if not over that by now.

Well said.

"this game is not for you," is far from constructive and is an easy way to respond to someone without having to put any thought into it.

I would disagree with you. There are times, where it may be appropriate to say that. I've seen quite a few people on these threads complaining about griefers or so-called griefers. If you fall into this category then this and many other games which have open sandbox online environments are "probably not for you". If you are not willing to take the risk of playing in "open", then play in "solo". The devs created a safer environment for people just like you. Don't whine you are getting killed, your stuff is getting stolen and your ship is getting blown up and you can't make your million credits an hour! That is part of the game, it's all about risk. If you are unable to deal with it, or find many of the alternate methods in the game to avoid it, "this game is not for you"! And yes, I worry that people want the game dumbed down. I have made criticism on these threads about broken mechanics or missing content (in my opinion) some of which has already been fixed, but making the game easier then it is now is ridiculous. It's a sim, please don't turn it into an arcade game. Actually I would like to see it a LOT more dangerous out there.

+1 rep and a +A comment in my opinion

yes the game will be released, and you're a fool to believe otherwise. you do realise chris roberts cannot fail to produce that game? if he were to pull the plug and claim it's impossible then he would be hit by the single biggest class action suit in the history of the world, guaranteed.

While it's true that you'll catch more flies with honey than vinegar, sometimes a good dose of fly spray is the only solution.

Oh god...

This is a simulation, if people asks to dumb it down, hell, the game isn't for them. The game will keep on following EXACTLY the principles it's following now. Braben used KS instead of a normal backer to avoid having to make a main stream game, with hand holding
He wanted to make THIS game

Sorry you didn't read about it before, but starting flame bait against the fans and the backers it's just a way of getting a warning
Behave please

Of course if you wanted to make a truly accurate simulation of human reality, dumb is definitely the direction in which to move ;)

The fanboy-ism on this forum is insane. I am so sick of seeing things like "This game is not for you" "You are playing wrong" "Chris Roberts can do no wrong" "Chris Roberts is a god among mortal men' "i wanna kiss Chris Roberts" and "I am going to make Chris Roberts my wife' Seriously guys try to look at the game critically. It will help the game change for the better.

to be frank the privilege of finding a game one likes well enough to be called a fanboy is nothing but a good thing.

personally speaking in my game rotation I have enough games I like to last me literally a lifetime. Games I feel frustrated with get dropped immediately.

Yeah - stupid positive, supportive attitudes everywhere. Us cynics are definitely in the minority.

Now where's my pitchfork?

I think the concern that many of us have is that some of the implied suggestions for change would cause the current fans to no longer like the game.
