There's allegedly a 100,000,000,000 solar systems in game. Players are going to be spread very, very thin anyway. Even if the area around Sol, some 500 LY is the only place where trading is taking place, it will be empty for the most part -- and while people might consider that empty, I'm fine with that. Space is huge and for the most part empty.
Elite never had pvp before; the fact that it does now is a change. It took 30 years to change that, so don't expect it to turn into a full pvp-only game anytime soon. I can't speak for other people, but I prefer Elite to be PVE. I'm not interested in an EVE clone. If solo play were dropped, I would move on to other games. That has nothing to do with 'inexperience' or 'new player' -- I can fly my completely kitted out T6 with my eyes closed and enjoy wandering around looking for better trade routes.
Even if the chance of running into a pirate that can blow me up is small, why would I want to take that risk to begin with. it's silly.
I do realise that pvpers need other players to 'play' with; over the last decade and a half, I've played many, many MMOs, most from their launch date and a few years. Inevitably there are pvp servers launched where people can slaughter each other. Sometimes they manage to live for a while, sometimes they go deserted in a matter of months. But inevitably, they are the first servers to be abandoned by the players -- because of the players. That is another reason why I look at these calls for moar pvp with more than a modicum of concern.
