The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Obviously planet landing will be cool, but to fully implement it with no immersion breaking artificial glass walls will take 1000s of man hours. Would prefer it if those man hours were put to deepening the core aspects of the space travel game.

Need?
No.
Want?
Oh yes please thank you very much.

Edit:
9/ ultimately maybe ED credits could be exchanged for real-world rewards eg. money-off future expansion packs to incentivise players to keep playing and making more money.
Ah, there it was, the true reason for your post.

FD have said they won't do something unless they can do it the right way. They won't add either feature unless it has a reason.

In short, the answer is "you don't know enough".

They specifically promoted on Kickstarter it´s coming "12 months after release", not 11 or 13 or 24 months after release, and they already presold expansions passes.

Stop endorsing more backpeddling.

That's the thing, I can't for the life of me think of any scenarios that would be worth ALLLLL that extra work. Not to mention the strain it'd put on FD. They have a staff full of spacesim programmers who'd have to adjust to making a load of content that they're not familiar with. You just have to look at that travesty that was Eve:Incarna to see how badly this could go.

I can't see how it will enahnce the game tbh. I want a space exploration game not a first person shooter.
I guess it will very much depend on how its done.
The idea of stealing ships is also a VERY BAD idea in my opinion. I would hate someone to pinch my ships. :)

Most of your suggestions are aimed for player interaction in open play mode.
Fine with me. I like them.

But what about the i-play-only-solo-because-all-other-people-bully-me-fraction?
Is it incentive enough to give open play a try?

You misread my post completely.

I was not saying they won't release these expansions. I was saying they will give them purpose.

Please read up. FD already have a completed but unreleased FPS built using the same Cobra engine that made ED. Much of the work is already done. Of course, a lot remains but they will not be starting from scratch.

Without it systems will suffer from a severe lack of character. Barring astronomical oddities, you'll never hear anyone say "Hey, have you ever been to *insert system name here*? That place is great!" because all the stations are completely identical.

ofcource this needs to be part of the game, But FDEV and Braben said clearly, We're not releasing these features 'till they're done right'

I can see a lot being done with planetary landing and station roaming. Borrowing ideas from other games (mainly Spore), they could do missions to go to a planet and save it from an eco disaster or deliveries or scenic cruises. As for stations, I'm sure gambling hasn't been outlawed in the whole galaxy ;)

I still have no clue what you would do walking around on your ship other than take a dump on the toilet but whatever. Just the option alone would be nice.

Planet landing just for the sake of be able to land on a planet is imo pretty useless feature if there is nothing to do on the planet.
But I guess they will implent mining station like they did in first encounter then we have atleast one purpose of planet landing, and I also want to have animal and flora to scan to be able to sell and perhaps some alien artifact, lost human colony, failed colony atempt, pirate cash, ship wrecks you can scan and loot and perhaps find modules that you can fit to your ship.

If all those things are implented then planetary landing will have a purpose.

it will just make the game richer, more feature complete and add a major human element to the game; Something space games lack. Also the countless gameplay aspects that arise from being a person instead of a ship are..countless.
