This is the thread that never ends, yes it just goes on and on my friends, some people started it not knowing what it was, and they'll continue posting in it forever and ever because....

Well, one thing we can agree upon, I think: This thread is hereby the first post-release Elite: Dangerous THREADNOUGHT.

For sure it goes on and on, and also with posts like yours... ;)
Have you read that in this thread every day the officials merge new similar threads opened?
So, it's normal that it grows continuously...

Well, one thing we can agree upon, I think: This thread is hereby the first post-release Elite: Dangerous THREADNOUGHT.

.... it's still just a baby though - we're only at c.2,500 posts. Once we move on to "The Solo vs Open vs Groups Thread II" (when this one reaches 10,000 posts and we break the forum software) - then it will truly be a threadnought.... ;)

I'm starting to think we should pass a hat around for donations and create a big pile of cash...

Then, whenever someone complains about the game they apparently didn't do any research on before buying it, we can buy their account off them (and close their forum account) and donate it to a needy gamer - someone who'd like the game but is too poor to buy it. That way, the person who did not research the game gets removed and we gain a new member who may add something constructive.

Come on FD, open up a PayPal account - I'll chip a £5 towards refunding the misguided (or too lazy to look) and helping other gamers out who may not ever get to play ED ;)

Visit Lave or any of the other areas where players converge.

I see a lot of players, but most of them seem very keen to get about their business and excuse me ... comming through.

Hike around the rare-routes. I have been sploring near there and it's fun seeing Type-6 get in quite a hurry when they see me jumping in system.

oh don't worry, i will as soon as i feel confident enought in handling my ship and have enought cr to cover my losses, i'm far from being done with this game yet.

but this doesn't mean i'm not concerned by the way it is heading, i actually am because i see a huge potential in this game, they really have the cards in hand to make an awesome game, unfortunately the attitude regarding this subject WILL lessen the "awesome", to the poiont the game might not survive, wich would be a real shame imao

But the problem with the forum will stay as it is: all people that don't have a game account could open threads and write here...so, not a good solution for me ;)

Hey Briaree,

One one hand we have the professional game developers at Frontier. They designed this game and the mode switching for specific reasons. These developers earn a living making games.

On the other hand, there is you. A person who dislikes the mode switching. Nothing wrong with you having an opinion.

I have a couple of questions:

1. Are you familiar with why the mode switching exists?

2. Can we talk about the reason?

Edit: Sandro Sammarco details the reasoning for the mode switching. Here is a link.

I have to admit tanks and flamethrowers would indeed ad a layer of entertainment to footbal games.
And it would give credibility to the ammount of money footbal players earn

Like, its all about the risk and reward thing.

As faar i am concerned football players play solo because they are to chicken to face open.

I agree those premiership one's are the worst of all in their private groups, they wont let any of us join in their game, they won't even play unless they a behind a wire fence with police all over the place.

The hardest part about this discussion to me are the people who miss the point and just generally have no idea what's going on.

It's simply more trouble than it's worth correcting everything that is wrong with your post. You're way off on pretty much all your assumptions and you don't even grasp the issue. What a bizarre group of people this game has attracted.

Please do take the time to explain it to me, I am an open minded person, if you take the time it is possible my opinion will change, unlikely but possible.

I really don't understand why I am wrong to enjoy the game I bought after researching and getting pretty much what I expected.

It was replaced within a year by Football Manager 2014 so I consider my predictions totally vindicated.

Wow that's just crazy, I bet they wished they had listened to you now :).

Not an opinion. When systems can be taken in open by people who aren't participating in open, it trivializes the system as trading becomes unstoppable (can do it solo and it's the most efficient) and only be countered by more solo training.

Once again, a mistaken assumption that systems can be "taken" in this game. :)

That's not how the network model works, and I suspect you know that. One more time, just for the halibut...

The P2P matchmaking servers will happily generate as many copies of a system and its space stations as are needed, to fill a multitude of separate Island bubble instances of 32 players each (if you're lucky, and usually it's less). What you see within your own shared Island depends on the quality of P2P connection to other players.

Even if Lord Braben waved his magic wand and made Open the only available mode, you still wouldn't be able to "take" a system. What you see in your own Island will never represent what else is happening in other Islands. That's why the game's focus is on supporting or opposing pre-existing major and minor factions. It just doesn't matter that you can't see every single player in an area, so it doesn't matter what mode they're in -- Solo, Private Group, or Open.

Of course, a single player or group of players can still role-play this, pretending that they "own" or control a system. That's already happening in some places. It's fun, but it's strictly role-playing because the network model doesn't support actual territorial control and choke points. It would need a client/server model to do that, and then we'd either be paying a subscription or dealing with a F2P/Pay-to-Win game model.

Again, I suspect you know all this, so I'm surprised that the idea of "taking a system" is still being used as an arguing point. :)

It's a broken system.

Not the way the devs see it, or a substantial portion of the player base, evidenced by the number of players still participating in the game.

Wishing it were different is a fine way to blow of steam, but it's about as productive as going over to a World of Warcraft forum and telling everyone that WoW is "broken" because it allows self-flagging for PvP on the PvE/RP servers. There is no persistent player-driven territorial control in WoW either, because it doesn't make sense with their distributed network design, just like it doesn't make sense here.

i'm really jealous about how you can keep it up without overreacting.
since i already got a warning, i'll keep out of discussing, just commenting ;)

it may not be a "broken" system, but it's a poorly designed system. this p2p model , imho, is absolute rubbish.... Yes i am still playing the game,..because space mmo is what I want but EVE sucks for people that want to pilot their craft. And SC is still years away..... so yeah I am still playing,....but I am just biding time til something better comes along.

As of right now, there just isn't anything meaningful to accomplish in this game.

And "meaningful" is purely subjective.
No, it's not about heroes, not about "ruling"...

But still there is something to accomplish if you don't restrict yourself to such bonds...

Just delete Solo & Group Play,Problem solved.

Why not just delete Open, Problem solved

Just delete the small number of players who think there is a problem where there isn't one.

Agree if the small number of players who think this game is all about killing other players were force into solo mode, then they would go. How many players would leave if forced into Open mode?

This "I'm a 13 year old kid who wants to destroy everybody attitude" is getting a little old now. Some people need to grow up and realise that this game is not a beat um up style game.

The three modes are there so people can choose. If you do not like people being able to have a choice then the door is over there >>> Close it behind you on your way out.

If you can understand that this game is about players working together to beat the environment then I am glad that you are being given a choice how to play.

Personally I would of liked Solo mode to have been Offline so people can play it where ever they are. As from past information that will arrive late this year, but still I am glad that I can play where ever I like.

I just hope all of these people who are demanding a private style server just for them to play their pk style game play understand that nothing in this post matters. They will not change the game because of these demands. get use to the idea of 3 modes and then play the game.

After all this is just a game and not REAL LIFE!!!!

If everyone would be forced into "open", you could join the terrorist cell i'd form then.
Forcing changes to PvP that everyone would wish the solo mode was back....
