Even my car has a rear view camera

lol, not that many people realize that advanced fighters actually use simple car like mirrors :D

Sometimes low tech is best. You can't jam mirrors or interfere with them electronically, they don't have batteries or fuses to blow or go flat, and they're "always on". :)

I use head tracking and love being able to see down past my feet when docking in ships like the Asp and T6.

That's it, that's the final straw that broke the proverbial camel. I've thought about it, backed away, thought about it again, still unsure, then you say something like that, now I've got to get me some headtracking.

Why cant we see what is behind us?
To make the game more challenging.

What bugs me is that when I push my rudder pedals, the guy's feet on screen don't move. That same guy that so kindly reminds me to flex my hands off the controls every now and then.

I don't necessarily need a rear view. It is extremely rare that I would need it in the void...ships are too small, dark or far away to really make snap judgments by peaking backwards. Furthermore, the target holo shows a ship's angle on you plus their distance.

What I really want though, are better impact warnings. Currently we just get the impact indicator, which helps a bit but is ultimately limited in an asteroid field, especially with FAoff...just some little red arrows, maybe...that show which side of my ship is in danger of impacting something would be plenty enough for me.

Meanwhile fighter-jets, lorries, transport ships and aeroplanes don't have them ;)

A toggle option for rear-viewscreen would be kinda sweet though :)

Actually fighter jets do have mirrors just as they were added in Spitfires from cars. I have now no need for it as I mostly fly forwards very well and fast. I can use Flight Assist OFF to flick 180 whilst fleeing. I once had the same yearning for this but it really matters not. Toggle your Target to "SEE" the type of ship after you.

Er, yes lorries do as it happens. Most lorries now use rear view cameras since they can't use rear view mirrors, they are often mounted just above the bar across the back facing straight back or 45 degree downward facing at the top.
Not seen Firefox? He had a rear view camera...
Most ships have rear view cameras now too and have done so for quite a long time before rear view cameras became available for cars.

Large civilian aircraft are dotted with external cameras too. They're becoming more common than mirrors... but apprently we lose the technology for them by the 33rd century.

Err and so do fighter jets actually... where do you think we keep getting video of aerial attacks from? Fighter planes had gun cameras way back in world war 2.

Large panamax type cargo ships are dotted with them too, for docking, navigating canals, etc.

Fighter jets certainly DO have them, to see if somebody is trying to get on their six. :)
The original Elite not only had a rear view (as well as side views), they had weaponry there to worry attackers.
Well that's me proven totally wrong hahaha! Cheers CMDRs, we learn something new every day :)

For the same reasons that every military jet and most large civilian aircraft have cameras and mirrors... scanners don't tell you everything, and scanners need interpretation which takes precious seconds in combat whereas a mirror/camera is intuitive. It's the same reason they stopped using analogue gauges and went to digital ones, analogue ones need interpretation (is that need pointing at 5 or 6? That needle's moving right, is that good or bad?) while a digital readout is faster to comprehend (153kn means 153 knots, not 150 or 155). And simply because it's free, easy situational data when you need as much situational awareness as you can get, so why WOULDN'T you include it?

Fair points, I just don't see it as necessary. I find the hologram + radar very intuitive.

Also concerned about HUD real estate, especially with the slight revamp to accommodate wings, so if they do include one I hope for an option to keep it off and never see it.

I loved this in the T9 with my Oculus Rift. Not only could i look down, i could also lean forward while looking down to get a better view of whats below me. Also in the Anaconda, i can lean forward and look up to see out of the canopy a bit better. It way nice :)

I do agree though, that little panel between the pilots legs would be perfect for locked external views. Be able to toggle it to show top down, bottom up, side to side and rear. I understand why FD doesn't want pilots to go a togglable 3rd person while piloting, being able to peek around a corner without having to go around the corner is lame and ruins the sneaky ninja pirates hiding behind asteroids waiting to jump you.
At the same time though, i don't know how often i would use it. The radar tells me everything i want to know about the ships around me. The only time i would find the external cams useful would be while docking, just to see how close i am to things. In any which case though, im all for FIXED cam views on the display between the pilots legs.

Pyro you are just rubbin it in now m8. :)

Can't imagine playing ED without head tracking and looking forward to DK2 or CV (if my patience holds out).

One of my other games is space engineers. And I often place rear view and bottom cameras to aid in my immersion when landing (I don't like using 3rd person to land). It often bothers me this functionality is not in ED to have landing cameras of sort, so I support the OP's idea

ha, sorry. :p

I would really try to hold out at this point for the CV1, or Vive if it gets support in Elite (which it probably will).

The idea is that you're a pilot and you see through the eyes of that pilot. Cutting away to a different camera would break this.

If you are a pilot looking through the eyes of a pilot then you WOULD be able to look behind you not be restricted to looking out the front window. Pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee stop saying it breaks realism. It actually does the opposite. You can turn right around and look behind you in a fighter cockpit in 2015 but in the future we became tactically stupid and built star fighters that limited our field of view so we are blind to bogeys on our six. . Lol.

Yes there is a radar, there is radar in 2015 as well. It is designed for something called "beyond visual range". It allows you to detect threats which you can't see. It allows you to decide between avoiding contact or engaging with missiles. Once an enemy is within visual range you are now involved in "dogfighting". Dogfighting is done with your eyes not the radar. Combat pilots use the phrase " lose sight, lose the fight". Get it? YOU MUST BE ABLE TO LOOK ALL AROUND YOU AIRCRAFT!!!! FD designed this game as a dogfight game due to the fact all combat takes place within an instance. Hence we need to be able to look all around us which is what REAL combat pilots can do. In WINGS with multiple bogeys it is even more imperative! No HARDCORE COMBAT SIM restricts this because it would be non-realistic.

It's so tiresome seeing people defend this from a realism perspective with no substance to the argument. Please do a little research otherwise you are just defending a poor game mechanic which actually makes the game more arcade.

If you're a bit clever with a soldering iron have a look at the Ed Tracker. Mine cost me about $20, works great. I wouldn't undock without it these days. :)
