If they discontinued solo mode I wouldn't play anymore either.

I'm quite happy for ED to remove SOLO. I'd just start my own private group with no one else in it. :p If they removed solo and private, my RL friends would no doubt leave, and I wouldn't want to stick around on my lonesome!

Damn! I should have done that as an April Fools yesterday - Announcement: Solo & Group modes to be axed! :D

I got flamed for doing a reference to a fake galnet post that Halsey had been assassinated. I have no idea what would have happened to the messenger for that one.

For the record - I haven't changed. I'm firmly in favour of the status quo...

Given the state of Open mode rules I doubt I would play in it for the time being but I have no problem with a server separation or exclusive community goals for open mode.

No point in getting angry, it's merely the default taunt - playground stuff!
Indeed whilst sometimes it gets my back up, when I think about it it is so comical to hear the word coward or scared thrown around. A mate of mine retired from the royal air force with honourable discharge getting called a coward by a spotty keyboard warrior.... Priceless really :D

Every time I see someone use "coward" as an insult here, I get the mental image of a 5 years old yelling "lame"; it's about as profound :p

In the MMO world, were just suppose to be abused at will. Well "ED" doesn't stand for that, and I'm glad. Hopefully they will usher in a new foundation for all "MMO" to come. Actually I think this is what terrifies the PVP Crowd.
They may actually be forced to play in the spirit of the game, and that will never do for the hard core greifer types.

Kinda has already happened. AFAIK the last big budget (at release) game that catered to their play style was Ultima Online, and even then it was by accident, because the team didn't want to enable that kind of abuse. EVE doesn't count here because, at release, it was a tiny indie game with very small budget (and it was released over a decade ago anyway).

There are some other games that kinda, but not completely, cater to them. ArcheAge is one; there is "mandatory" PvP, but it's only mandatory for those that care about building houses or ships, and the looting is restricted to just the item traded for the building materials (except for pirates and criminals, those can be looted). Similar with Lineage; players can be attacked, but only the reds (those that have attacked other players without provocation in the past) can be looted.

If you look at most MMOs released in the last decade, they tend to be games where PvP is fully optional and the main, sometimes only, way for a player to directly harm the enjoyment of others is by being a jerk in chat. The days of MMOs being known as games where the strong prey on the weak are long past, nowadays most MMO players never played a game that forces them into PvP.

Single player option was a huge mistake

Isn't this meant to be a sandbox mmo? Giving people the option to go on their own "instance server" is just taking away from the sandbox style of game play. You know what will happen don't you? Someone will be killed while trading and they'll just go on the single player server :/

It should just be one shard were everyone is on the same server that way it helps to build community and relationships. You log onto server A on Monday and on Tuesday you log onto server B, how is this going to affect the community aspect of the game?

The game does not feel like a mmo at the moment if I'm honest with you. An mmo without guilds? With the extremely small server limit I would not call this game a mmo at all.

What would happen if they couldn't switch to solo? They would stop playing since they can't enjoy the game or switch profession.
There is no way to enforce "victim traders" in open. Especially because the other options get pushed in regards of profit.

As for the "relationship" aspect... I don't want relationships.
I wasted enough years on MMOs, doing things i didn't want to at that given moment just because the guild needed me.

And that answers your last paragraph. Some people don't want guilds.
And i couldn't care less if the game can't be called "MMO".
In fact, that's a big plus for me ;)

I've never known a player to stop playing a game because they were killed. Sure if they could never undock without being killed I could understand but this isn't the case.

If you don't want a guild then don't join one.

It's not about being killed. It's about playing absolutely relaxed without the option of being killed just because you're no NPC.
Pure MMO and PvP players won't ever understand this, that's why the thread is still running.
And i'm not even part of that PvE heavy group of players. I couldn't care less to get into a fight or getting killed.

Regarding guilds:
Sure i don't have to join one.
But if there are guilds and all the mechanics to cater them, you are forced to join one if you want to play the game.
Even the "wings" update makes it really unappealing for loners to join open play.

What he said. Pretty much sums it up.

Just one mode ? I would find that dull and boring. Different groups helps people with different personalities play the game their way.

I like being on my own. I don't want communities and relationships to be forced on me.

Cheers, Phos.

Yea, I haven't played some of those. I don't know why many get the idea, I don't like PVP. It's all a matter of how it's formatted. I love PS2, as a matter of fact, it's probably my favorite PVP game. But games like EVE never really measured up in the PVP category in my opinion. I do agree with "Jolly Fingers" though, I'll never join another guild. Even in PS2 I'm a rouge, and love it that way.

I always liked a good evenly matched fight, there the ones that always made me laugh out loud. Where's the good fight when 4 or 5 gankers show up to kill a lone hauler, "with no guns or no cargo" I might add. Where does that get to be fun? What fun is it to kill a 3 day old newb who is confused and lost?

although i'm with you on the matter...

as a long term rogue i kind of hate you for that ;)

To be fair, there's a difference between the PvP crowd and the PK/Greifer bunch. I hate seeing the label applied to both, because the former are usually honest individuals who enjoy PvP with like minded people because they enjoy the challenge of skilled competition. The latter are mindless cretins who can only glean enjoyment out of a game in direct proportion to the misery than can directly inflict on others. Unfortunately, in open world mmo's there is no effective way to allow one and restrict the other. Till that time, players need a way to find a repreive from senseless greif some players insist is in the realm of fair gameplay. People will leave because of it - UO's first year example is always before us of how the PK cancer can destroy a playerbase. If i had a nickle every time in UO a tank mage justified killing a defenseless miner who had stripped to his underwear by saying "I'm roleplaying a serial murderer!" I could buy myself a Steam key. I applaud Frontier for including alternate gameplay modes and have to say also you can count me among the number that if Solo play was not an option, I would not have bought the game either. That's good business, because I'll wager there are far more people like me who play than there are greifers.

Your mate is one of many, I am part of that group too.

Being told (or inferred) that I am scared, or a coward, because I don't play in open right now (besides the point but I played open from PB1 to mid gamma) is insulting to be fair.

If I go into open, I only have an Asp, insurance ~ 1 million CR, I have ~ 15 million CR, my pixels can be destroyed by someone else's pixels 5 times before I go solo again & I will get those 5 million CR back in week or two by doing something for or against some other pixels, that does not scare me at all.

Yeah I have been scared before, really scared!, but it wasn't ever sitting in my spare room on a PC!.

I know - refreshing, ain't it!

Yes it is.

Can someone please tell me (or link) the show (etx? eta?, it was recent) where DBOBE is asked if guilds, clans, corps will be supported in the game. I have tried googling it but I can't remember which show it was at, it was linked in this post but was about 100 pages ago.

I think it needs to be shown again as DBOBE states that ED does not support, guilds, clans, corps, right now (and I love the look on his face when he is asked, lol that will tell you what he is thinking).

I currently play in a Private PvE group called Mobius that allows PvP but only in specific areas (combat zones where you declare a faction).
.
I would prefer to play in Open, but it is not attractive to me as it stands now because of the level of 'griefing' and unprofessional piracy.
.
I honestly don't mind piracy, as long as it is modeled like real piracy.
.
IMO, the problem with Elite is that there are basically no repercussions for acts of aggression to another player. If piracy (and griefing) were at all risky than it simply wouldn't happen as frequently.
.
One mechanic that might promote 'Real' Piracy and deter Griefing is implementing a system which makes 'aggressive' player pay large fines upon their death. If implemented correctly we'd end up with 2 things:
1) fewer and more cautious pirates (the professionals)
2) a bunch of griefers flying around in stock Sidewinders (the rest)
.
The fines could scale according to the system or region you're in. There could be Hi-Security and Low-Security areas, similar to Eve, but instead of implementing the baby-sitting security forces like in Eve (which only works because everyone has to use those jump gates) what if the severity of the fines levied against a player depended on how 'strict' the local enforcement was?
For instance, in a Hi-Sec system a fine is 100x higher than in a Lo-Sec system.
.
Obviously, the game would need to incentivize people to travel to Lo-Sec by providing more lucrative trade routes and resource sites. This allows the trader/miner a choice to play in open yet still have a safe haven if preferred but understanding that there's less profit.
.
I really don't mind being pirated by a person who is assuming a realistic risk in attempting to do so.......... Piracy belongs in this game. Griefing does not. So let's promote piracy and deter griefing. Be a smart pirate, earn lots of money, otherwise live in poverty with the rest of the mean people.
.
Also, I do believe that Open play should be rewarded at higher levels than Solo play. There are limited risks in Solo, less risk = less reward... especially if a Hi/Lo-Sec game mechanic were to be implemented.
I'm not even talking about financial rewards either, but the rewards for faction points and flipping systems.
If a group works hard to win control of a system, how do they defend it from another group that simply plays in Solo and never shows themselves as they erode the other team's control?... its simply cowardly and unfair, and nobody likes playing games that promote cowardice and imbalance.
.
This is my 2 cents worth.
.
Cheers,
Jericho
