I voted yes for a steam key but there a +'s and -'s to having it on steam

The upside is that giving out free keys to all us beta backers etc allows us to having our second commander slot without any work from FD. Updates will run automatically and steam seem to be a stable platform (even EvE is on steam now a decade after it started)

Still dont really like steam but i come from the age of owning a physical copy of the game rather than digital downloads. Still feels like you are renting the game rather than buying it but thats just me i suppose. The biggest problem i have with steam is the release times,
many games i have brought were it says release date for example is 2nd April, so log into steam at midnight to play the said game and then have to wait til maybe 5 or 6 pm to play because the game only releases on US time. Steam is a global delivery system and as such should deliver games at Midnight Zulu in each specific country. Cities Skylines was a primes example of that, uploaded to steam the day before release by the developers but had to wait til 4pm to play it.

The downside is that no key i will probably buy it on steam and also buy the boxed version which is now out (to go along with my other boxed versions of elite since the bbc version :D)

You wouldn't get a second copy of the game, you'd still login to the same account as before. So no second commander slot I'm afraid.

Yes I want a key. Just make the key give us access to the launcher etc. from steam but not a new account. We have to go through the game launcher anyway.

No choice but to give us a key

I feel as a beta player and 'early adopter', that if I dont get a steam key then I am being a bit short changed compared to someone who joined later and bought through steam...
Steam as a lot of advantages and I should have the choice on whether to use it or not.

I wouldn't count on getting this key for free. Valve will want some money for you to use their bandwith and services.

Nonsense. Valve do not charge devs for bandwidth. It's actually in FD's favour to give Steam keys out to the masses. Their back end, so to speak, will not be under so much pressure or cost as much since Steam's free bandwidth will cover most downloads of the game. It's up to FD to sort out patches through the launcher, if they don't utilize the full range of services provided by Steam regarding patching and updates. They would be fools not to consider this route.

I would LOVE a Steam key for ED now that it's on Steam. I purchased when it was in beta and honestly didn't give this possibility much thought - but now that it's there, I must place myself firmly in the camp of Steam key requesters.

Hey all, friendly reminder from the mod team...

This thread is for talking about whether you personally want a Steam key. Please put general comments in the main Steam thread - we'll have to close this one if it turns into a dupe thread.

If you'd like a post moved over, PM one of the team with a link to the post(s) and we'll see what we can do.

Everyone who owned a boxed copy of Company of Heroes also received a free version to run via Steam when they switched over to Valve's servers. No money required.

Which is meaningless in a discussion about Elite Dangerous. Frontier didn't develop that game, and they aren't shutting down their own servers. Different companies under different circumstances, so there's no real precedent involved, unless someone can cite proof that no money changed hands between Valve and Relic in the deal?

I paid full retail price for the game, and registered an account just to say that YES I would like a Steam key.

Please, FD, make this right and give us keys. It will only help your business.
