Racial diversity among the powerplay lead figures

The revelation of the characters should have been a great moment of joy for FD and instead of that, it should be a nightmare for them right know... Thank you to the OP and all the guys who see problems where there is no need to...

At their place I would suppress the Power Play thing and leave the game just like that!

Sad community...

This is also true. The good news, though, is that those offended or disappointed by the supposed lack of diversity are in the distinct minority. I haven't run a proper tally, but my guess is that 1 or 2 in 10 (of posters in this thread) have expressed disappointment, while the remaining majority have suggested it's a non-issue.

It's media. It's the same as TV, music, books, whatever. It plays into our culture, and how others who are different than us are treated in our culture has a wider implication for our society.

Just imagine if this standard were applied across the entire spectrum of media. No other ethnic groups ever shown, only white people of European descent. How would that effect our wider society, particularly other ethnic groups?

Nobody is raking FDev across hot coals for this, but drawing their attention to it is hardly a bad thing.

Whereas in fact, minority ethnic groups are likely over-represented on UK screens, as compared to demographics, and probably even in this lineup of pictures. And as FDEV are primarily a UK-based developer, it's not surprising or a cause for concern that their lineup adheres fairly closely to the demographic mix in their country. If this game was being developed in Nairobi, things might look a little different, and that would be no surprise. However, the game development community in Nairobi doesn't appear to be driving this project.

This thread just goes to show how far humans have to go before we can truly shed our cultural prejudices and become a truly equal , civil, Utopian society.

Always funny to see how worked up people who supposedly don't care or are sick of the subject get. If you're so tired of it and don't care, why even click the thread? Why be so hellbent on getting the thread closed?

That said, I feel that the character diversity is no way near bad. There's apparently 10 more to come and I'm sure they'll be pretty diverse too. But people have different opinions and wants and that's fine. What's diverse enough for someone might not be anough for someone else.

You are probably right but I'm a bit too nervous about this thread to really see the pourcentage... ^^

It's just that I would never believe that a thing like this could happen and it did!

"Humanity"! XD

Thank you for the comfort man! :p

First world problems.. Guys, you think way too much. Get a beer/wine, relax ... and wait for power play. :)

Got to admit I nearly fell off me chair when I saw Archon. Daaamn, this guy looks 200% meaner than I imagined! I will be honoured to fight by his side.

Also, that Lady in the middle.. (Arissa Lavigny?) If I wasn't devoted to Archon already I'd join her in a heartbeat. Attractive!

I think the real issue here isnt "racism" at all. It's whether people feel the game was made for them to play it, or if it was made for people look more like the country it was created in. This game is an international phenomenon. And whether or not you feel the game was made for you will depend on whether or not you look at those 10 faces and see something that looks familiar. That's not racism, that's just human nature.

The problem with this familiar facial recognition, is that the current distribution looks very insular and is therefore a bit unwelcoming to some people. If you are fine with current distribution, it is likely because you see enough that you can relate to in those 10 faces. It doesn't make you a racist. It makes you a normal human being.

However, if you don't see yourself reflected in that line up, it's perfectly normal to feel excluded and marginalized. In point of fact, I can almost guarantee that if the spectrum was inverted, then the thread posting would be inverted as well. And instead of people calling it racist or biased, they would probably be calling it "pandering" and "unrealistic."

Personally, I'm feeling a bit pandered to. But as a gamer I am used to playing games were the villain is a few shades darker than the hero. It's nothing new. I am actually relieved Archon DeLaine was made paler simply for this reason alone. Although I am a little miffed that the Mexican looking dude is banana republic copy-pasta, but hey, there aren't a lot of Mexicans running around the streets of London, so I guess they can't be blamed for basing the chars on the headlines. Because the Devs have probably never met a Mexican. It's not a crime, and it's certainly not racist. It just speaks to their limited life experience that they made the Mexican looking guy a militant bag. If I had made the game, based on my own experience, Denton Patreus would have been a jolly organic farmer who loved to dance and cook. Or maybe a Yoga instructor who played the cello, lol.

A black person? Which one of them looks black to you, the vaguely hispanic or indian looking senator? I'm probably the palest dude you'd ever meet in your life, and none of these people look "black" in the least.

Living in Finland you might not have met many black people.

Both Winters and Patreus could clearly be black or self identify as black as "races" are really not that relevant.

I fail to see the problem. What's the appropriate ratio of whitish to not whitish for it to be PC? 1:1? I see three obviously not whitish people, so fairly comparable to the demographics of the more diverse Western nations.

And keep in mind these are just ten people (who happen to rank as some of the most powerful in the galaxy).

I am glad you didn't follow a really bad trope and had made Archon Delaine the only black guy, that would have been really awkward. So let this be just a small heads-up towards FD - good start, but you could still do better.
You say that but.... his facial structure (lips, nose, cheekbones, chin, forehead) and dreadlocks all to me look black.
Albino black people do exist, and honestly he looks like one - he might even have red eyes.

He looks a bit like the dude that played the token Angry Blackman from Atlantis

How about FD provide a wide selection of portraits and everyone can choose what they want to attach to each name.

The portraits make no difference to the game play, everyone can choose who they want according to their own prejudices. A random selection could be generated for those who can't be bothered to choose.

The British are not a race, and speaking as a Brit no it's not prejudiced. The games industry here has historically been largely comprised of white men, that is changing as the country's demographic changes and opportunities for non white males increase.

I travel often to the British isles and I know quite well the difference between say English and British.

However, in context it was clear what you meant. If anyone were in doubt, this post made it crystal clear. British---games industry here....comprised of white men....

Btw. You forgot about non-white females. Probably the most oppressed subgroup in Britain.

Well, to be honest, Archon is clearly the darkest-skinned of the group.

and he's a pirate lord/smuggler/murderer.

So, if we really want to get into this, FD DID go there. And, I'm not surprised. Black folks(like myself) have always been cast as the bad guys. The "blacks and crime" connection has been, frankly, pounded into the heads, indoctrination-style, of people across the world.

Meanwhile, white men and women in suits are the ones who orchestrated the global crash in 2008.(mostly) white bankers are the ones who launder money for the global drug trade. These are the people who took your job, your house, your livelihood, if it was lost. The biggest "gangsta's" on this earth are lily-white and have exactly zero chance of being "stopped and frisked".

But if you ask someone what a "criminal" looks like, they'll come back at you with the image of someone who could be found in any of Snoop Dogg's videos.

So, even though I don't think for a moment that Braben and co. had any racist intention here..there may be unconscious bias showing itself. how can it not? Every person on earth with access to TV and internet has been told, both overtly, and covertly, that we black folks are thugs, killers, low-class, etc etc etc. how can anyone expect that not to reflect in works such as this?

I think it's sad that we had to even get into this. It's a sci-fi universe, and racism shouldn't even be a thought. These fictional characters should have moved past racism at this point. I think, in the ED universe, they HAVE moved past it.

The real question is, have WE moved past it?

The answer is quite clear.

Yeah, actually I find this post massively offensive, blaming white folks for everything? What? So there's no race but white people working in all the worlds banks now? eh?

I'm not surprised though considering you can ask anyone about slavery and they'll say white person did it, blacks victims. Have a look at the real history of slavery (how about finding out that the term slavery comes from the term Slav and heads up slavs weren't black). Many slaves have been whites, read up on the Barbary slave trade. I presume that this is because the US only teaches about IT's slavery issues and not the bigger picture.

Check out literally EVERY movie out and it seems the bad guys a white brit, either the character or the actor. I'm white and I flew to the US back in 2002 and guess what I was stopped and frisked going both directions, <Ali G>was it because I is white? <Ali G> When I was younger I was a metal head (still am but look more respectable! ;) ) and people crossed the road to avoid me (long hair and all that) why? Is it because people (EVERY person) has a bias or prejudice?

Personally I'm sick of the racist anti white attitudes that political correctness empowers. People in power crap on those who are weak REGARDLESS of their race. And I fully expect the leaders of developing nations who are not white to continue that trend (and its clear many are with colossal infringements of human rights in non white countries), some of the worst world leaders are currently non white.

Can we PLEASE stop singling out whites and blaming them for everything?

If you can't look at a white face and say "they represent me", then how can you expect a white person to do the same thing with a black face?
