News Announcement: Elite: Dangerous coming to Xbox One

It's more than you can expect from other PC to console ports. As a PC player I honestly don't see a reason for myself to double dip - let alone having to buy the game again.

How entitled can you be, really?

The problem is, the entitlement argument goes both ways. If you say it's entitled to expect not to have to buy the game again, you also have to say it's entitled of the company to expect people to buy again.

Has there been an announcement from Frontier yet that they are unable to control distribution channel of the xbox version of Elite?
And what does this mean exactly?

It probably means that every time they have to release an update to the X-Box Client. They have to jump through the Microsoft hoops to get it done. It'll be the same with the PS4 version when it comes.

What will probably happen is the PC/Mac versions will still get their releases ( at the moment, it's like once every two months) with the console versions getting a catchup release every six months or so.

Error! Does not compute...

Nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything. They are however giving you a £5 money off voucher should you wish to do so.

Of course not. No one is forcing them to make gamers buy their game again either. Why does a company get a pass but a consumer doesn't?

TBH they should be giving a discount instead of 5 quid towards stuff from their store.

I have no interest in buying the game for console but I'm sure there's a lot of people who backed for 100 quid or more who would buy it for console and to them a 5er sounds like a slap in the face.

Companies like to stay in business? Plus it's only $31 so not like it's $60. I would've paid $60 don't get me wrong, but I'm a sucker for space and/or flight sims also. :)

Of course companies like to stay in business. Consumers also like to stay solvent. And you could make the argument that $31 to a company isn't that much, but to a consumer it could be a big deal.

I'm not even that particularly upset about it, it's just not something I'm going to do (double dip, I mean). I'm fine with missing out on the game. I just wish there had been some consideration given to those that were instrumental in making the game happen in the first place, to get the game on their preferred (at least in my case) platform.

Ever seen a precedent of PC game licenses carrying over to a console of a different company? Seeing as they retroactively provide Steam keys, although they have to share profits of their future addon sales with Valve for these activated keys, they'd probably not even be opposed to the idea. But seeing so little precedent I guess there's more to porting to and selling the game on a console.

Doesn't change that expecting to get the console port as free addition to the PC & Mac license is pretty entitled.

First, no one said free. Most would be happy with a discount. Even 50% would be welcome. Second, the expectation is happening on the side of the company, not the consumer. It's not an expectation re: the console version, just a frustration that consideration wasn't given to those who made the game happen. On the contrary, I think it's quite entitled for a company to tell customers, "You helped make this game happen. Now you have to buy the game again to get it on your preferred platform." That's expectation. That's entitlement. And that's their right. It's their game. But don't expect all gamers to be happy about it, and don't accuse customers of feeling entitled for being frustrated about it. That's backwards.

Well to put it simply if Frontier declares they are not in control of the distribution channel then I wouldn't be asking for free access to console version.
Are they in charge of the Steam distribution channel?
Whatever the case I as a kickstarter backer, with the Q&A saying they will give the game free to all platform if they are able, would like my console version at the cost price Frontier pays to Microsoft/Sony for distribution/fees. I don't want any profit margin to be collected on my purchase/download of my console version of Elite. That is plainly my kickstarter entitlement not my own made up entitlement.

Ive been playing ED on PC for about 2 months now. I have several friends and some family that play xbox one since they do not have gaming PC's. I always talk about how much I like the game so several of them downloaded the free trial of thee game to see how they feel about it since they have never played a space simulation type game. I was very disappointed and them as well to find out the trial version was only 1 hour. Anybody who has played ED know 1 hour is just enough time if it is enough just to go through tutorials to get a feel for everything. Wouldn't a week make more sense? Within that week they would have invested in the game and Im very sure would buy it anyway. Is an hour the best you could do for the trial? I downloaded it for xbox one as well but dont even want to try the trial after learning its only 1 hour of gameplay. If I cant convince them to buy it I really have no reason to play it on xbox as well. Love the game by the way. Just commenting on the XBONE trial version.

For the record I do belive KS backer who paid a certain ammount for it should get 50% off at the very least.

Yes one hour is frankly insignificant. As in all areas, shoving the people is not the best way to achieve optimal results. A trial week is excessive ? But 1 or 2 days instead of one hour would allow a better appreciation and probably will avoid losing customers. For my part, one hour of trial ? I do not even look at the game

I can almost guarentee that MS are in full control of the whole XBox one end of the project from the exclusive deathmatch content, to distribution as well other things charging for patches to be tested at the devs cost as well as charging devs for patch distribution on Xbox Live etc.

I am waiting for the other shoe to drop when it is announced that an Xbox Live Gold Subscription will be required to play the game, and thus the possible low price tag at the moment.

Also MS in the past has point blank refused to allow cross play between PC/PS and Xbox customers so again I am waiting for a reversal on that promise when MS decides to have the Xbox players locked off.

From: https://support.elitedangerous.com/kb/faq.php?id=148:

When the game is fully released from the Game Preview Programme, Elite: Dangerous can be played in Solo mode (single player) with a Silver account. Players will still enjoy the full benefit of being connected to the shared online galaxy. An internet connection is still required for this mode.

In order to enjoy the multiplayer features of the Elite: Dangerous universe and to be able to team up with your friends you will need a current Xbox Live Gold subscription

and thus the possible low price tag at the moment.
The price is low because it's in the GPP.

I honestly don't think I've uttered a non-supportive word since pre-BETA days, and it saddens me to say it today.

As a backer on both platforms now, the £5 (time-limited) offer on future merchandise purchases felt like a slap to me, I must admit.

Bottom line is being a PC backer feels less like a honour & more like a liability right now :(
Can someone tell me, maturely! how that's not the case?

I guess we accept it by just treating Frontier as one more studio in the line of studios we pay money to and get product from?

I can live with that, but I just can't hold the studio in the same high regard as I have since the 80s & to me personally, that's a real shame.

As ever, I wish everyone at Frontier the very best of luck.
The Xbox users I have spoken to are very keen to see stability arrive and excited for the future (just as we were only a few moons ago!).

CQC is coming first to Xbox One during GPP. It will come to PC and Mac later in the year as part of a free update.

Michael

Are you kidding me Michael? What are you doing to this game? It's a potential masterpiece, groundbreaking piece of art and you are now supporting the Xbox version more than the original PC version? I have to say, with all the mistakes Frontier is making, you're basically begging myself and others to completely convert to Star Citizen when it comes out. Yes, they are totally different games, but the bugs and complete lack of communication in this game are about to make me put it down. In fact, there's a couple more games that I would now rather play than Elite for several reasons. Mind you, if you all could get your act together, I would pay handsomely for every update; provided it wasn't just a couple new ships (sometimes only applying to empire players) and some limited content that only applies to people who have the luxury of not working. Here's just a few:

1. Interdiction bugs.
2. Lackluster content that largely only applies only to hardcore gamers.
3. Support of the console version over the original.
4. Complete grind to have anything in-game worth having.
5. Lack of communication except for over-hyping of pretty lacking content.
6. Release of a multi-player update that basically penalizes players for "winging" up by splitting their bounties.
7. Large disregard for the fact that not everyone is a mindless trader jumping between systems...

Rant is over. Please get your crap together Frontier, and please don't ruin a great game...

You could at least play elite dangerous half a year now, and even one year with the beta period on PC.
Now let the console players get something ahead too. Why are you guys are so greedy?
Why do you have all things NOW while complaining about them anyway as you finally get them?

I probably would be in rage mode myself if they had done it with planetary landings,
but this is a game mode entirely made for console gamers to deliver them stupid action. So they should be the ones to test it and give feedback because it is for them.
And when all is final on this mode we "PC Master Race" will get it too. I'm totally fine with it.

At the risk of being flamed ...

Isn't the game already 50% off, $30 of what is normally $60 for new releases?

As far as double dipping... I'm kind of indifferent... sure Kickstart backers of some levels should have got their choice of Xbox or PS4 version. But I don't feel like I should get a second copy for a different format because I bought it on one format or the other.

It's like tells Lars that I should get the CD version of the Metallica album I just bought on cassette when it's released for free.

Just my opinion
