The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Planetary Landings means we need to know about Multiple pilots in single ships.

This feature that we've heard nothing about in months is so complimentary to planetary landings I think we need a definite answer on when it is scheduled to be added. There is a lot of potential for loading up some wingmates in a Python, Conda, Panther, etc... along with their small fighters and/or SRVs to go and engage in team oriented tasks, be they PP objectives, exploring multiple planets at once, or escorting and piracy. PC's and NPC's.

Multiple pilots has the option of adding just as much to the game now as Planetary Landings will. I'm sure a majority of players would like to see it put on the fast track to be finished.

As long as it comes with NPC crew options. I don't want to have to try to coordinate six different people to get anything done. Or be part of the massive botch-ups that happen whenever anyone tries to coordinate multiple players online, either. I had my share of guild party snafus in SWTOR, I don't need to be tied down to it here.

All I want is the empty seats on my bridge filled by NPCS that I can always count on to be there.

The screw-ups are half the fun. :D

It's just a video game, you're allowed a few mistakes.

Edit:
Pilot: Jim I'm going to drop you off on the third moon, it looks like the dark side should have some good deposits.
Jim: .......
Pilot: Jim.... You there?
Jim: Yeah! Yeah I'm here, sorry. Just got back, the dog knocked something over and I had to go clean it up. What happened?
Pilot: Where are you?....
Jim: Still on that one black rock in uhh... Hang on let me check the map. In LHS 1882. Yeah...
Pilot: -Thinking about how that was 7 jumps back- ..... I.... *sighs* You know what?... Screw it, good luck Jim.
Jim: What? Hey, where are you? What was that about? Hey man... HEY!

Second edit: I have no idea what happened to the colors, but I'm too lazy to fix it. You're all adults, figure it out. :D

I suppose, but all of that will be doable with the existing structure, but you will all fly your own ships and land next to each other. What would the other "pilots" do while you flew them there? Just wander around the ship, sit and stare out a window? I can see this coming but there are a few other fundamental pre-reqs that need to be met, like walking around, ship interiors, being able to store things other than 1 ton cargo increments in your ship.

How about taking control of other functions so that the pilot can be a pilot? And how long is the wait going to be? If you're flying from one end of known space to another sure that'd take a while before the passengers got to do anything. If you're 2k ly out and exploring they're only going to be twiddling their thumbs for the minute or so it takes to get from one star to the next and pick out which planets are worth exploring. The pilot will spend more time sitting around waiting for Jim to finish screwing around on the edge of a lava pool on the metallic planet really.

For example: Systems control - make a console that intuitively shows a player what power is available, and what the pilot is using, and let them control the pips on a more fine tuned level. Coordination can occur over voice chat. Weapons: Giving another player control of the weapons is no big deal, we already have gimbaled and turreted weapons. And for the love of god put someone on Navigation. Going back and forth and back and forth and back and forth to the side menu to pick different locations is maddening. I personally could spend all day staring at the galaxy map and not give two flying figs about piloting the ship. It is by far one of the most interesting parts of the game for me.

No cut scene for the planetary landings

Players will explore new worlds, coasting over mountaintops, diving into canyons, landing on the surface and rolling out onto the surface in your SRV, all without loading times or breaks in gameplay.

;)

Have to admit - having read a fair bit of technical info over the years from people trying to write this type of code - I thought they might go the Star Citizen cut scene route. Overjoyed by that one snippet of info. It's doing it 'properly' - definitely the difficult path though. AI alone dealing with all these situations / lodding terrain etc must be a nightmare (Anyone remember the issues AI had with Frontier?)

They could be uber-pedantic and argue something like the hyperspace jump isn't a loading screen (yes, stuff is loading, but you can still look around and interact with your ship) nor a break in gameplay.

I really hope it's completely seamless.. fingers crossed.

It's hard to believe but, the current system is an instanced fast travel and another instance for slow travel, how will they hide this when you approach planets? Or have they really found a way to remove this instanced approach altogether?

It might be possible, the mmo planetside 2 has a similar mechanic, you can have thousands of players on 1 map and depending on where you are the engine seamlessly match makes players in a bubble surrounding you without loadscreen.

But alas i doubt it, i think when they show gameplay of horizons it will be supercruising down to the planet and drop out aka hidden loadscreen out of supercruise a few kilometers above the surface.

I read it as "Warning, Warning, you are too close!" SC drop outs and then fly down in real-time but at present that can take hours!

I'm pretty sure that it already is possible to seamlessly enter and leave instances in ED, though you'll only find this in circumstances where instances changes happens upon crossing boundaries as opposed to pressing a button, sicne there of course is some load time. I'm pretty sure that it will be possible to do this seamlessly, especially if you leave the supercruise instance when you go into the ''Orbitcruise'' or whatever they called it.

If you can enter an SRV, then how will this happen seamlessly if there isn't walking around ships? So one could assume that there will be a loading screen for this interaction until the walking around ships expansion is bolted on. ... Or did I miss something? :)

PS: And what about underwater exploration? That would be awesome too. ;)

The same as when you change ships in a station now, I guess. Until they develope FPV, which now I am not going to doubt will happen

Ground Battles in Horizons/Planetary landing????

If i understood right from trailer and store page we will have ground vehicle/s in horizons. So, we can atleast drive around the planet, mining and exploration are obvious, but Combat:eek:. From store page:

FORTIFIED SETTLEMENTS
Attack and defend bases from ground or above.

DRIVING ON PLANETS
Embark on surface expeditions in all-terrain Surface Roving Vehicles (SRVs).

So, we will have epic tank/vehcle battles? Multiple vehicles? Vehicle only weapowns? Vehicle CQC? Actual Assaults to planets with federal dropships dropping tanks? And maybe orbital strikes from capital ships to enemy cities. Can we finally get those onionhead farmers with our tanks?

You're contradicting yourself.

Entering and exiting supercruise IS a loadscreen right now, it isn't seamless at all it takes about 3-8 seconds to enter an instance or leave one. If it was seamless there would be no loading time, it would be instantaneous which it isn't.

So my curiosity stands and how they will make it "seamless" for appraching planets.

There's going to be something called Orbital Cruise which they described as being like supercruise but around the planets instead of in space, so I suspect you'll drop out of supercruise into orbital cruise (really hope they find a better name), the question for me is how orbital cruise will interact with other ships and bases, hopefully they can make it seamless at those points, but I'm currently sceptical as it sounds like the orbital cruise will be faster than normal flying speeds.
