The Planetary landing and planetside missions discussion Thread

Yes, but the planet is really, physically there. They need it because in a few decades, they will use it to fill it with procedurally generated content.
Also, some guy once got into a glitch in Arena Commander and flew all the way to the planet - it's not just a picture, it has surface but it looked really, REALLY bad.

well its physically there when in space, but the whole surface of it is not rendered in the sequence when landing. There is no way FD, or anyone, can have that kind of details on a 1:1 scale explorable planet because the hardware couldn't do it. If you think SC will do it, i've got a bridge to sell you. Anyone who thinks planets in ED could ever look THAT good is living in lalaland.

Planetary Dogfights + loss of thrusters

Thinking about combat tactics when Horizons hits - It would seem the fastest way to take someone out is to target thrusters, no thrusters = large brick vs gravity. Reboots take roughly 15/20 seconds? Not much time to avoid becoming a permanent crater on one of these moons planets.

Am probably overthinking this, but it seems like it could be potentially worse than power plant sniping?

I strongly hope that exactly this will be possible.

Good point...some other factors to consider...

Vector at time of thruster loss...if you've got some momentum moving away from the planet, you will have a parabolic drop.

Planet's acceleration of gravity...you might have more time if you are on a very low g moon

Projectile fire...if you are being shot at head on by bullets or cannon balls, the projectiles could potentially give you more force towards the surface. Imagine firing cannons at a ship from above to try to smash them into the ground.

Consider how well the ships might survive an impact. If it is a low g planet, you could tumble on the ground...possibly giving you a shot at reboot/repair once grounded.

Some ships (thinking Cobra and Asp) may well have a chance of gliding. Others (I think the Dropship will live up to its name!) will probably make a brick look graceful.

Trying to imagine the size of the crater a T9 or Conda will leave if they hit at speed.

Only if they have atmospheric control surfaces and are not relying on thrusters for attitude adjustment :)

My first thought was the scene at the end of "Serenity," when the ship gets hit by the EMP and Wash glides her in while waiting for the systems to reboot. Granted, it'll be a bit different on a moon with no atmosphere and no wings or air resistance to provide some braking. My other thought is, these moons are much smaller, and as such will have a lower gravitational force to exert on ships close to their surfaces. So depending on how large the moon is, and how far away when you lose thrusters, it's conceivable that you *might* be able to survive getting your thrusters shot out. Maybe. I seriously also hope this is how it will work, as it will add a whole new dimension of fun and hilarity!

Sounds like a great idea - however I figure most fights will take place at rather low altitudes unless energy fighting is a major factor which I doubt given most ships thrust to weight ratios.

It's probably early days given the sparse information on the gravitational flight model.

I don't think so, anytime I have had my thrusters shot out it has only affected my forward thrust, my pitch/roll/vertical/horizontal all work just fine and I've been able to maneuver to point toward my high wake target and get out. I would think you'd have to target more than just the main drives to get all of the thrusters offline.

I was thinking just this.

I can't begin to imagine what thought process leads people to think that the planetary landing expansion is a frivolous endeavor. This game NEEDS IT. The dynamics of planetary combat is going to be nothing short of epic.

Can you confirm that? Primarily hauling in the T9 for over year, have been at the wrong end of a powerful ships weapons many times.

Thrusters taking severe damage - 'Module malfunction, thrusters revert to a weird FA-OFF mode temporarily'

Completely destroyed - thrusters are completely gone, not just main thrusters. Prior to the wings update we would have to self destruct if we lost thrusters.

I've been away for three months, has 1.3 changed all that?

Whilst they look the right shape, aerofoil-ish there's going to be one small problem - no air*!

*At least in the first release.

Indeed, there will be no friction, either. The only retarding force to your desired vector will be gravity. Which will be more than enough to deal with when piloting a T9 fully loaded with Imperial Slaves for the mining colony.

it would be funny if you try to put down on some moon, only to find out your normally some what useful class d thrusters just dont cut the mustard when it comes to putting a 1700t type 9 down safely

But if you're in a Fer De Lance, you could fire your Huge Cannon like a burst-retrothruster to slow your descent xD

I had exactly that problem with a Lion transport in FE2. Had to tilt her back onto main thrusters just to touch down.
Kudos to the OP by the way, this thread has a high SQUEEE factor ;)
