ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

Welcome to you Globusdiablo. You might be interested in joining in with the OR discussions we have on here. This thread would be a good place to start.

For hardware specs, that is still to be finalized, but so far specs for the Alpha are modest and again we have lots of discussion about it. Try this thread to begin with.

Last thing, there is no official conformation of a PS4 edition as yet.

Hope that helps you. :)

If resolution and lag/delay gets sorted, this is the only way to play!:

That's a very nice video, & really enjoyed watching it. However, you have to consider that it's made using an early release dev kit of the OR, & doesn't reflect the current prototype performance. Unless I'm mistaken, the lag has already been essentially eliminated, the display is already up to 1080P on the Crystal Cove prototype, and they've implemented full 6DOF positional tracking. And that's still a revision or two (or more?) away from commercial launch, so it's only going to get more polished.

I'm very excited to see what the commercial product ends up like, & think the OR is the start of the next Big Leap Forward in gameplay, similarly to how the first 3d cards revolutionised things. My only real concern is not being able to see my keyboard whilst wearing the OR, though a decent HOTAS will eliminate much of the need for that. There are, however, still going to be times when you need to see what your fingers are doing, & that's going to be tricky with an OR.....

OR + STEM System. You wear your OR, have your hands on your HOTAS and on the back of each hand you have a STEM. FD have already got a in-game avatar. All they need do now is attach those hands to the position of the STEMs.

I'm not familiar with STEMs, so I'll google those shortly. I'm guessing you mean something along the lines of it tracks hand movement, and clickable hot-spots in the cockpit though? Something like you can take your hand off the throttle & flick a switch in the cockpit? Assuming I'm on the right track, that's something that'll work fantastically for clickable cockpits & systems interaction, but it won't help you for text chat, having to alt-tab out for a moment to respond to an IM, being able to maintain at least some awareness of your surroundings, that kind of thing. You can take the OR off, or at least lift it away from your face for those few seconds, sure, but I'd prefer it if you didn't have to.

Perhaps a small "bifocal" like idea, where if you look below the display there's a narrow field of view of where you can see your hands, but you have to be looking right at it to see it, so it doesn't interfere with what you see on the display?

Not very on-topic for an E: D forum post I know, but I do wonder if they've considered something along those lines, & if it's workable.

I agree OR will probably be the ideal way to play games like Elite. Problem is Elite will likely be finished long before OR. At least they expect the OR to be available within the next two years and ED is coming out this year.

We are going to need virtual gloves and in game virtual keyboard interfaces, one thing at a time but we will get there.

I want this game so bad, and think it should be bundled with Oculus Rift when shipping starts. It is a marriage made in heaven. I will never leave my armchair again.. :D

Welcome.

I think the problem with bundling ED with the Rift is that they've already committed to co-publish Eve Valkyrie with CCP as a launch title. Valkyrie's not going to have the depth of ED, but it's a cockpit based space combat game, so probably too close to be a joint venture. And I suspect they'd have chosen Star Citizen anyway, just because of the momentum that game already has.

Totally agree.

However, when the consumer version of the Rift is released, there's going to be only one AAA space sim available to purchase (as far as I know), designed with the Rift in mind.

I suspect an awful lot of Rift purchasers will also be Elite: Dangerous purchasers - as long as FD devs make sure that E: D is a truly awesome OR experience.

RIGHT ON COMMANDER!:)

Hey everyone. I loved the original games to death, and am absolutely over the moon about this title. But have you seen it with Oculus Rift glasses? Holy crab cakes!!

One concern though. Hardware specs, if I want to max the game settings. All we have at the moment is laptops/tablets and a PS3. So I will be buying a rig, just to play Elite Dangerous. I know, I know... So what should I be looking to get, if I want the full Monty?

And another thing!:D Is it confermed for PS4?

Thats all from me for now. Cant wait...

See you all out there soon!

Commander Globusdiablo :)

Hello Commander Globusdiablo!

As a fellow Commander who is an Oculus Rift enthusiast and someone who's tried Elite Dangerous with it on, I heartily welcome you to the forums and can confirm that the experience with the rift is ,well.. out of this world ;)

The possibilities are endless and wonderful!

Yes ED on the PS4 hasn't been confirmed, however I think you may find this article interesting...

Yeah I reckon OR users will embrace ED with open arms also. I personally will probably be buying any game that works well with the rift, and the fact ED is embracing OR as well is like 5 or maybe even 6 Christmas's rolled into 1 ;)

Buying a new computer for playing one certain game is something i did only once before, in 1984, when i purchased a used Commodore 64 from a classmate for 100.- DM. Sure you know which game that was. Right now, planning to do that again, when beta starts, i'm afraid it's going to be much more expensive this time. You're definitly not the only one.

Yes, this year waiting for christmas has already begun. :)
