ED and the Oculus Rift DK1 Discussion Thread

In terms of game balance concerns that people have, there are essentially free head-tracking alternatives to the OR and TrackIR, software solutions like FreeTrack, & FaceTrackNoIR which use your everyday webcam to obtain some very impressive results.

They can be finicky to set up - especially the ones which require you to build your own LED rig - and are quite sensitive to environmental light, so your mileage in terms of how well they work will most definitely vary, but you can set yourself up with a decent head-tracking solution in under 20min for the cost of a webcam (look for high fps ones, 30fps or more). You can (potentially, if you can get it to work well) enjoy the same benefits that a TrackIR or OR will confer, for a very small fraction of the cost.

And never mind keeping up with the Jones', with their fancy commercial head-tracking solutions. Everyone who spends time on flight sims, or games like E: D & SC owes it to themselves to at least try one of the free headtracking solutions, even if it doesn't work out well for them, just to see the potential of these things, & experience how good games are with them. I cannot overstate how big a difference head-tracking makes, even if all you're doing is turning your head to look out of the window of your Cessna 172 to look at the scenery in FSX.

Never mind any combat advantage it can confer, not having your view locked in one direction, being able to just look at that planet, or the runway you're approaching, or the corner you're driving towards, simply by turning your head, adds so much to the enjoyment of flight sim & driving type games.

hehe now that was unfortunate but hilarious!! :D

Bad things can happen when using Oculus... I mean this!!

Taken your advice. Installed FaceTrackNOIR, got it tracking my face ok in the FTNOIR software but it won't work with ED alpha. Apparently the TrackIR API that ED uses is encrypted so "free" clones won't work with it - you need the official TrackIR and that's not a cheap option. There's supposed to be a suboptimal workaround using the VJoy virtual joystick but I can't it working for me - probably due to lack of multiple controller support in ED at the moment (I also have a HOTAS).

So, thanks for the idea, I got excited, but it doesn't work at the moment! Fingers crossed FD will put in native support for Freetrack API.

Probably right..

Buying a new computer for playing one certain game is something i did only once before, in 1984, when i purchased a used Commodore 64 from a classmate for 100.- DM. Sure you know which game that was. Right now, planning to do that again, when beta starts, i'm afraid it's going to be much more expensive this time. You're definitly not the only one.

Yes, this year waiting for christmas has already begun. :)

I can only agree.. :) Nice to know I'm not the only "spaced out" wacko :)

i have one already, and i would say wait for the consumer one of end of this year, saying that it is awsome just wish graphic's were better, if you got spare cash get one if not wait, i think its 2 weeks delivery at the moment, dogfighting in the rift is something else....

I've just stuck mine on fleabay - I'm not using it at all now and they're still selling well. I imagine if/when DK2 is announced (people are speculating GDC next month) its value may fall significantly.

Exactly what I said, I got mine yesterday and while it is the coolest and most amazing thing EVER.... I am happy to put up with its CLEAR issues... and I can afford to buy the retail one too when its out.. BUT don't waste cash on dev Kit 1 if its all you can afford.. SAVE it. The resolution is poor in the Oculus unit.. what you see on the stream is the GPU output, not what is on the oculus... I will try to capture that today to give an indication of what the TRUE picture is... also the latency in moving is not perfect... So while it is AWESOME... the Retail will be the one to wait for!!

I can't capture it in its true form, but it is essentially looking at a tv screen with a magnifying glass.. thats the truth of it at the current minute,,

Elite is STUNNING with it..... STUNNING.. but its near impossible to read the panels and difficult to see targets far out...

HOWEVER LOOOVE it all the same...

thats the speculation due to the part not being made for DK1,,

I suspect though with a Q3 release plan, this may lead to a further drought of oculus availability... and it wouldn't go down well, everyone who ordered waiting till Feb to get it, and then dev kit 2 pops along...

I still think Q3 Dk 2 and Q4 Retail... I THINK!!!
