Game Discussions The No Man's Sky Thread

I was expecting something similar to the old Elites at least (or the fan "remake", Pioneer).

They need to improve the lighting system in ED as well, currently you only get light from 1 star and planets don't cast shadows on each other (nor do rings cast shadows on planets). These things will be even more obvious from the surface and it won't look right. E.g. you will get strange things like a sun in the sky but it's night on the planet, or full brightness even though a planet/moon is blocking out the sun.

Maybe I'm wrong as I don't follow it closely, but I've not seen any real variety in the vids from NMS. Unless variety means: "look this grass is red" or "look this dinosaur is small".

Still might be an interesting game, but the hype is in overdrive.

Well, I think it looks pretty damn beautiful in a classic 'chris foss et al' sci fi way. Which is exactly what it was intended to look like.

However, I have to disagree with the assertion that ED is 'simmy' or even realistic. But there is undeniably a great game in here just waiting to emerge.
I hope they let it, but I fear not going on current observations.

Both will be allotted space on my SSD.

FIGHT!

Hmm I wonder if Elite can match No Mans Sky planets by june next year?

You mean as in having atmospheres and vegetation etc?
I am certain FD won't be able to do that in such a short time.
Season 2 is about planets without atmospheres and some cool other stuff.
Atmospheric planets are in a completely different ballpark.
Just thinking about what FD will have to accomplish there makes my head hurt.
But as far as general planetary detail and realism are concerned Elite surpasses NMS with ease.
When they get to the atmospheric planets I believe we will be blown away.

I am also looking forward to volcanic planets.
I think that creating a variety of realistic looking volcanic activities is a big challenge too.
Can't wait to see it in game.

I like NMS for what it is, but playing that game will be like playing in a colorful cartoon environment, which can be fun, but I do not believe it is something I will be able to do for as long as I have been involved in ED.
Currently I feel like I could play Elite forever, with all the cool stuff that is in store for us :).
The NMS design in general doesn't do it for me.
Elite's environments, sunsets and sunrises can sometimes bring a tear to my eye. I do not think NMS will be able to invoke that same emotion.

I was very impressed by NMS's creature generation engine, as shown in one of the older videos.
I suppose FD will implement something akin to it.

Yes two different kinds of games with vast galactic exploration and other features. The one big difference for me is one game will run smoother and be (less) of a simulation. And Yes, I might like that...

Interesting, there was a rumour of PC release at the same time. Looks like that may not be the case.
.
Also its a little further out than I expected 'June 16', but welcomed just the same. Only its the PC version I'll be playing, when it arrives. :)

Pretty sure it wasn't just a rumor, but confirmed by the lead guy from Hello Games.

EDIT: Yes PC and PS4 had same day release as confirmed by Hello Games. I hope that is still going to happen: http://www.gamespot.com/articles/no-man-s-sky-pc-and-ps4-will-release-at-same-time/1100-6428267/

Is it? I thought it was about NMS in general ;)

Limit Theory will have limited (to locations of docks/trade stations) Planet Landings, and Star Citizen is going to have full on FPS planets (assuming it ever finishes!).

I'm really looking forward to modding NMS, that is specific to the PC version and assuming the off-line option stays in the PC release, should be a lot of fun to play around with :)

Threads were merged...when I answered it belonged to a thread comparing ED planets to NMS planets.

Star Citizen will have landing zones similar to Mass Effect, not fully realized planets where you can move freely across the entire surface. These areas will be separate levels disconnected from the space world. Same is true for LT. So yes, if you want total freedom to explore the whole surface of a 1:1 scale planet, then you can forget about SC and LT. ;) ...You can always play them for other reasons of course...I will!

NMS is a day one purchase for me too, :)

so they paid, with some heavy bags of gold, Rutger hauer to say a phrase
that recalls Blade Runner somehow..
I wonder if this mean that Sony decided to bet everything on this title.

wrong move or right ?

Time will tell. I think it comes down to the POI's on the planets. What activities will there be and will it be enough to make each planet feel like a new adventure.

NMS has apparently cracked how to make caves and overhangs, which ED hasn't. The fact that the devs seemed quite defiant/defensive in a recent Q&A when the question of the possibility of in-game caves was put to them made it seem like their chosen method of implementing planet surfaces is unable to cope with caves by design.

It's a trade off both devs have made. NMS has a relatively short draw distances once you transition through the atmophere. Suits the sci-fi book cover aesthetic well enough I think. It would be poor for the atmo free worlds in horizons though.

It's not that they "cracked it", it's that they're using an entirely different method for generating the planets which makes overhangs and caves easy to do, ie. voxel based.

Are caves that important? If I was making a wishlist of things I wished ELITE had, caves would be a very, very long way down the list. It's certainly not worth the going voxel-based for them.
