News Sneek Peek #5 - Slow zoom from the edge of a misty crater

This video shows a (in part) volcanic planet...just not with active volcanism added yet, which will come later in the season.
Do metallic veins point towards that it's somehow volcanic? I think it's just a rocky planet close enough to its star to make some elements evaporate on the lit part of its surface. I agree that volcanic stuff will be added later in Horizons - never said it wouldn't, but it's not related to close up view quality. Current season taught us that if it's not looking great at release it wouldn't look better at the end.

I think that was lava lakes. The OP basically says so.

"showing the effect of volatiles forming as a mist in a deep crater"

Anyone care to explain what 'volatiles forming' means? :)

Actually it's "volatiles forming as a mist" is the bit to highlight.

Anyway, from Wikipedia (yeah yeah...) :

"In planetary science, volatiles are the group of chemical elements and chemical compounds with low boiling points that are associated with a planet's or moon's crust and/or atmosphere. Examples include nitrogen, water, carbon dioxide, ammonia, hydrogen, methane and sulfur dioxide."

So in Horizons' case, these are volatiles that are forming mists inside craters - a planet doesn't need to have an atmosphere all around it for this to happen.

You could at a stretch consider that volatile mist as a mini atmosphere of sorts within the crater - atmospheric landings! ;)

VERY atmospheric landings .. !! :D

That view into the crater, with the mount in the middle and mist all around at 00:23, is somethings else.

And .. 18 days, to scheduled beta ..

Here's another unedited video taken from Elite Dangerous: Horizons. Again, many things here are unfinished which I won't call out. This shows another slow zoom, but this time showing the effect of volatiles forming as a mist in a deep crater on a cold, rocky, uninhabited world:

That......is a amazing, please tell me though that either confidential/debug camera will be able to go out further from stuff with horizon update or that we can get a module or such that could do the same, please. Landscape shots with SRV just being tiny and barely noticeable for scale..

This is...just amazing.

I really hope we get some sort of sampling tool on the SRV. I want to be able to go "I wonder what this rock -or mist, or lake, or whatever- is made of" Doesn't need any more gameplay than that. Just for my own curiosity.

Thinking about it I don't think the glowing areas are volcanic as a volcanic world wouldn't have so many craters as the surface would be constantly changing. To have craters you need a static surface for many millions of years. I think they must be areas of more reflective metallic material (mining anyone?) which are just much more reflective than the surrounding rock. Another hint of this is that you don't see any of the orange glow on the dark side of the planet, further suggesting we're seeing reflected light rather than glowing volcanism.

I haven't seen any improvements in graphics in our current game season since its release in 2014. Why should I expect it for Horizons?

You obviously haven't seen the "How to Make a Real World " livestream that cleary showed a massive improvement of Horizons over what worlds without atmosphere currently look like.

Don't tell me you can't see the difference.

Great video, thanks David!

If we will get a transition with our ships between supercruise and orbital cruise just half as smooth as the zoom of the debug cam in this video it will be perfect! :)

What planet is that? I want to add it to my list to check out when Horizons drops. That large crater looks like it would be fun in the SRV!

It's almost certainly in the 49 Arietis system. All of David Braben's SRV-driving sneak peeks have been on 49 Arietis 1 A. I don't think this is the same moon, but the star is the same spectral class, so I'm guessing one of the other bodies in that system.

I'm still a bit worried we haven't seen the transition from SC to OC...

I mean when we see videos of the camera everything is seamless but they will HAVE to add a transition somewhere to load the instance (network). I hope it is smoother than the one we have in asteroids...

Expect something like what we have when we exit supercruise in empty space (the planet won't suddenly pop in, nor will there be any close objet that pops in). The game will probably hang while it loads like it usually does, but there shouldn't be any violent transition, it should be pretty smooth.

I'm amazed by what I see in Horizons, except for closeup view of the ground/terrain (closer than 300 meter around buggy). But during the current season I haven't seen any improvements in graphics - it actually got a lot worse since what we saw in beta 2014 for the sake of xbox contract. So my point is: if closeup view wouldn't look great at release of Horizons there's no reason to expect it will get better until 3rd(or later) season.

This reasoning doesn't make sense. Because there haven't been graphical improvements in 2015 doesn't mean there won't be in 2016. Actually if we follow your reasoning, there will never ever be any graphical improvement to the game.

On a positive note, I remember that close to release they tweaked quite a lot of graphical details that made the whole game look a bit better. It's possible the same will happen, maybe close to Horizons release they'll add little details and effects that will improve the visuals.
