News Horizons Beta Delay to Monday 30th November

Forgive me for being silly, but the very PURPOSE of a beta is to find bugs, and the fact that it is a beta denotes that there will be bugs. How can you have a polished beta? That just doesn't make sense. These days the whole beta seems more like early access, with all this 'it's not finished yet' OF COURSE IT ISN'T FINISHED, because it's a BETA.

Oh yes, as everyone says "take as long as you want." It's not as if we paid money for this beta access, is it.

I know everyone likes to have a happy-happy community spirit here; but I just want to put down that a few of us do actually realise there is a business deal going on here: we give FD money; they give us a product. I can accept a few days delays; but not the whole thanking them for that, and this essentially encouraging them to take as long as they want. No.

Oh, you're *that* guy at parties...

I'm Still calling it as December 1st as mentioned in the previous update post. Not that I'm complaining it means my upgrades may arrive before the horizons beta starts. :)

For those new to joining the game, please keep in mind the following.

Based on the experience of the last 18 months, then FD says they are going to release on a certain date, this does not mean at 0.01 on that date. It means some time that day up to midnight (UK time).

This is not like GTA or whatever where the game went gold weeks earlier and they are just releasing it at midnight for everyone. The decision to release or not is probably made only on the morning of the release day.

Typically they didn't release the beta until late in the day or the evening of that day (UK time). I can only remember once when a significant release came in the morning.

Also, as we've seen this week, beta release dates are not set in stone and can change due to unexpected issues.

Therefore it's probably not a good idea to plan your whole day or week on Monday around playing the beta, unless you have a backup plan if it's delayed to the evening or later.

Also keep in mind this is the biggest release since the original beta testing was taking place - there could easily be significant issues with some combinations of hardware or some players when it goes live which leaves small groups unable to play for a short time, so for this reason also it's best not to expect to be able to play full time immediately.

Finally, based on previous roll-outs, you can be pretty sure that whatever you do in the beta system will not carry forward into the live system, so unless FD say different, if you are a new player just joining, you should assume that you will lose all activity that you made during beta when the final release happens.

One word springs to mind : Valve time

when I read this, in my head, you sounded like Sheldon Cooper.. ;)

I certainly love and appreciate all of the patience being expressed. But......

Having taken time off of work, around a National Holiday no less, was like pulling teeth. The odds of me getting any time off to play the the Beta now are null. I can't even express my disappointment in words. From now on, let's just add a week to whatever we think a potential release day could be in order to help out the working folks like myself. I worked hard to earn the money to buy Beta, and now I'm going to just continue to work hard....without being able to play Beta. You're killing me ED and FD.

Back to Star Citizen, Fallout 4, and DCS World I guess as I've no Beta to spend all of this completely unnecessary time off I have now. PAAAAIIIIIN.

You know what would ease the pain?! That beautiful chrome Vulture I've been eyeing in the shop for a while now. Ahem...........just a thought. ;-)

Feeling a bit jangly! Definitely experiencing deep Expectation Withdrawal Syndrome now. Dear lord it will be bad come Monday. Only driving a buggy (SRV) will fix me.

Thanks David, the great thing about all of this has been the communication from yourself and the rest of the team. Great work, you can see how it has stopped a lot of outpouring of cries of break out the pitchforks.

Thanks David for the communication, and for the huge amount of work you are all pulling in. Very much appreciated, despite some other discordant voices...
I have been on board since Beta, and it always surprises me to read some of those comments... Major bugs should be squashed as much as possible, that's good.

OK, silly. The thing about a beta is that it aims to be free of bugs. The beta stage is a testing stage of the finished code before final release: ideally no bugs should be found. In reality some will be. But the aim is to minimise the likelihood of that. So yes, beta's get polished.

The deal is: we give FD money; they deliver a functioning product by an agreed deadline but slippage of that deadline may occur, as has always been made clear.

Moreover there is no point getting wound up about it: things are as they are, and no screaming or stamping feet is going to change that. Stuff happens. Frontier has in the end always delivered.

aww so cool, that is it what no other game has, no other game has such a nice support! Its so nice to hear from top how it is going, and that gives me a verry good feeling about horizons.
Im so happy to bought Elite Dangerous, its an awesome game from Frontier. And Froniers support is awesome too. Thx for all David, take the time it needs and it will be great. Its so amazing to get news from top.
thx for directly contacting the players, have a nice day

While it is a bit of a bummer to find out that the beta would be pushed back to 11/30, based on what David has said in this thread that is probably a good thing. That's not to say that we won't find some things to fix in the beta when it drops, but I do feel that significant issues should be dealt with and a big thanks goes out to the team working on the beta for doing this.

Well, this just ups the anticipation for playing Horizons.
