UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

GalNet articles are manually generated for most part. None of the station problem reports seem auto generated. Any game-mechanic has to be connected to shut down, not issue report.

Reading that the Imps. dumped more than 500 units in Harma and the station did not go directly to shut down, makes me think that there is a time factor as well.

I don't doubt that at least a 1000 units have been sold at 49 and 64. Warky and Arawere on the other hand, no way. They are either NPC affected or just turned off for story reasons.

The essence of story that FD is telling is that humans will act irresponsibly when faced with a new challenge . Some out of curiosity, some out of greed and some out of malice. It's up to the players in some sense, but FD are nudging us in the 'wrong' direction.

The UA itself probably don't have any intent at all except surviving, spreading and growing. It can probably be used for both 'good' and 'bad' or we can chose to leave it alone.

We are the Canonn. Our mission is to find out all possible aspects of the UA. The players of Elite will chose how they use that knowledge.

Couldn't have put it better. Right On, Commander

Can't rep that Han_Zen, and I wanted to find you a picture of UA cookies, but of course, nobody has ever baked them :( (challenge accepted!)

"Out of game" I'm always looking for practical impacts of things, and how they can affect my gaming experience, which is why I'm hung up on player agency in this story :) It's a hard habit to kick, being a software developer.

"In game", well, let's just say I'm a slightly less altruistic pilot than the Canonn might care for ;)

Oh, I wouldn't worry about that. We've already got plenty of pilots with shady backgrounds. And shady foregrounds. Pretty apt description for half the council, actually.

We don't need to know - plausible deniability must be maintained ;)

All we really care about is your extensive help and involvement here - what you do under any other group/faction banner is up to you (well, with obvious disclaimers about protecting 'our own' etc etc) :D

CMDRs doing & saying things under the Canonn banner - now that's a different kettle of UAs ;)

I look forward to reading your Galnet btw - your experiment has proven to be a fascinating probe into the mechanics of this thing - I have a feeling you might get your shutdown if you get published ;)

I think you have proven that your approach gives results

When it comes to altruism I think that is a personal choice.

I lean more to the mad scientist method :D

1. Did someone try shooting it with a disruptor pulse before it activates the morse?
2. Ejecting it on a planet and dismissing the ship, using the SRV to approach within 2km. Will it send a signal to represent the SRV schematic?
3. Completing a Discovery Scanner scan to time the Honk with the initial Positive or Negative tone of the object, what would happen?

I found my first UA last night. I've read lots of things about them and watch many videos. I've always thought that they look organic almost seed like but last night a thought crossed my mind. As I was staring at it, talking to the video that I was recording, I figured that the head looked like a flower bud with the petals all wrapped up waiting for spring to pop open. But that didn't make sense until another thought. The flower part of a plant exists to lure in insects for the plant to pollinate. Thargoids are insect like so I'm wondering whether UAs are to lure in Thargoids. I quite expect the "bud" part of a UA to spring open if the scan detects a thargoid ship. But why? What would happen next?

The morse code could be there as a clue to the original as well as a clue as to what it is doing. Morse code is human by origin and this could be a simply be a way FDev wants to deliver the clue to us gamers because no one speaks alien. But what if these UAs where built by the old explorers and pioneers from a few hundred years ago (in game of course) aka The Missing? I'm thinking that these pioneers created an early warning system in the shape of the UAs and that they are pointing to Merope because that is where the pioneers have headed to.

However, it would have taken them hundreds of years to travel round the Pleiades to drop the UAs off so that is where my idea falls over. Also, why go to Merope there aren't any earth like planets to live on there.

I don't think the UAs have anything to do with the pioneers. Mostly because if I wanted to make contact with this rest of humanity I'd not build an esoteric vessel and use morse-code. I'd make a big neon sign saying "HALP! We're over here and SCREWED." :)

Could be difficult to make self-replicating speakers that does voice?

Perhaps they were unable to grow anything better.

Fair enough but since they couldn't travel faster than light they would have believed that help wouldn't arrive for several hundred years. By then it'll be too late. Also, their comms was pretty rubbish too

Canonneer Service to bypass server downtime with thinkings

Ok, just to put a bit of salt on the thread, here is the only NEW thing I've discovered in 2.0 beta, ...
Funny to see all (self placed) spoiler rules fail.

No biscuits at surface so far. But maybe in Season 3?
Surface test: UA is not degrading in Beta if rejected from SRV. Stay 100%. And rotate ...
Surface_01.jpg

A few service information, helpfull to keep in mind to avoid frustration:
- Jumps (route) are now counted correct. Not "jumps+1" as until V1.4. But big issues with lost routes.
- Now again (locked) mission cargo! Forget stack long range delivery missions sell cargo and buy in target region.
- "data link" only worked for the most CMDR's if "fire button enables deploy hardpoints" is set, for whatever reason ever.
- bugs like hell until yesterday's Beta6 so far ...

But it will be pretty for CMDR's looking for "science":
Surface_02.jpg
Science: "SAP 8", "Trinkets of hidden Fortune", "AI Relics", "Hafnium", "Gallite" in naval convoy, lots of unsolved NPC chatter, lots of "Rares" ...

Only a one time post to say: Thank's to all contributor's for this wonderfull UA thread series.
Good luck in 1.5 and "Horizons" and a special salute to all vanished CMDR's.

The SRV in front of an UA morse test will be one of the first tests I'll perform after official release. ;)
The UA has been shot and scanned with everything in game. Timed Discovery scanning been done a lot.

Pretty sure it's easier to write a hand-written note then build a UA ;)

That said, if I asked some of my developers to solve something in a simple manner, our company would be shutting down with radiation/toxicity problems also.... ;)

It's energetic in here all of a sudden :)

Michael

I believe the word is 'feverish'...

And presumably you're looking forward to seeing what we do with your new toys (including the hidden ones right? ;) )

Good luck to you guys today with the release - keep the Jaffa Cakes close by to aid with stress relief!
