UA Mystery thread 4 - The Canonn

I suspected from the tone of their post it could be trolling, but I happened to be only two jumps away as I was doing other experiments nearby. So I thought, fine, I'll bite, and take a look.

So far, nothing unusual to me. I've tried both light and dark sides of the planet.

The most interesting POI discovery was an uncharted outpost/facility/buildings with some canisters, but it just seemed to be standard POI RNG stuff. http://imgur.com/tNITlNY

Explored a few more POIs, repeatedly going to orbital cruise and back. Some crashed ships, some scattered canisters, one downed satellite dish (not the nav beacon).

Most interesting terrain I found was a canyon network with a large crater intersecting it. http://imgur.com/YboLqHg

This place was great fun to explore in the buggy, but there's no tentacles/barnacles/Jehovas Witnesses here. There were a number of POIs here, but just appeared to be standard POI RNG stuff.

It's a big place, so I have by no means explored it completely and could easily have missed something of course. There is a huge shallow (relatively) impact crater on one side of the planet which I will check out next, but if that turns up more of the same I'm going to go back to my other experiments.

I did a quick skim of the large crater, nothing stood out as being out of the ordinary. I'm going back to my other experiments until any explanation of why this planet is special.

I am giving up too.

"They are easily machined, but as yet cannot be manufactured, only found in space."

ONLY found on planets, not "ONLY found in space".

The in-game description is very clear. Space only. Not planets.
The surface of a planet is not generally regarded as space. WSS, USS etc and asteroid fields/belts are space, but that is not where you will find them. The description should have read "only found on planets" or even "airless planets".
The fact that we weren't told what the green structures in the video were, added to this confusion. Like xdeath said "symptom of poor communication as a result of trying to be vague and esoteric"

The problem here is something I like to call "Marble Hornets Syndrome"

In trying to create an interesting but challenging puzzle, you make a key element of the puzzle based off of something obscure, such as the fact that space is defined scientifically and politically as "the area beyond the exosphere and all the objects, planetary and interplanetary within the defined boundaries."

This definition was lifted from the UN treaty on space. While the definition will have changed in the future, I think we were too quick to rule out planets.

Enough politics, find that Barnicle!

I remember there being a fan-made video series based around Slenderman called 'Marble Hornets'. I had no idea the term had a meaning lol
The term I use is referencing that marble hornets. I just came up with it on the spot. There were several puzzles (specifically in to the ark's videos) that have obscure solutions that were only solved after the series finished.

Marbled Hornets was a sort-of arg that was made right at the beginning of slenderman, in case you are interested.

Ahh okay, gotcha! I had no idea it had any depth to it, outside of being a video series. I remember enjoying it to start with but kinda fell off following it when it started adding... I dunno how to describe them... some sillier elements? Perhaps it deserves a rewatch on my part.

Not sure if this has already been noted in-thread (a quick search says 'no'), but it seems there are others looking for meta-alloys...

Note that it says 'Planet' as the target location.

(I got the mission while doing the Dahan trade CG, I believe it was Shriver Platform in the Ovid system, which seems like a pretty dull place)

That's extremely odd... I get a "Too close, dropping" warning when even I try to approach for a landing.

I can't land on 3A in Merope either and keep getting dropped from sc too. Is that a bug or intentional? I'm flying an asp with an empty cargo hold (no UA). What are the people who can land there flying and what's in your cargo hold?

Yep I landed there yesterday evening (around 20hrs ago) without any problem. I had a UA with me. BTW at first glance there wasn't anything special about the planet and I just spent a few minutes while i recorded the UA song (which was also normal, just transmitted the name of the planet). Did you try restarting the game?

I would love to punch that guy in the face...
I mean I'd LOVE to bring you infinite amount of that thingy just tell me where did you "come across it"

BTW that seems to be a huge step forward, as the number of stellar bodies in game is significantly less than the infinity of space in the galaxy :D

++rep way to go cmdr...think this is the rabbit hole we're after...having a mission should initiate 'something' I think...much like undertaking bounty missions tend to create more instances of pirates than normal...

Regarding the whole "found in space" thing, I think people need to stop taking all of FDev's comments as carefully constructed legalese with layers of embedded meaning.

That might be the case sometimes, but it seems silly to expect it to be the case always. Most often, humans will communicate like humans.

I restarted, went back to merope several times. Still no landable 3A for me. I'm now going to pick up a UA and go back to Merope to see if that makes 3A ladable. If it suddenly unlocks, that would be significant. Weird thing is it shows as having an atmosphere for me and shouldn't be landable for any others too... Will report on what having UA in ship does.

I remember a time when "in space" meant anything above the peak of Everest!
:))

I havent tried planetary landings yet, but I thought it was only possible to land on planets without atmosphere? That pic states 3A has a sulphur dioxide atmosphere.

Yeah, I guess that settles that. At a minimum the meta-alloys can be found on a planet.

I'm sorry to tell you that Merope 3A is not landable for EVERYONE, not because there's a bug, but because it has an atmosphere. ;)
Landable planets have a blue circle around them, as you can see in your image...
