Is Elite Dangerous a Dad's Game Played mainly by "non-gamers"?

I've had the rules for noughts and cross changed for you. Now, there's only one square, you only need one in a row and you get to go first. Have 'fun'.
Oh boy, you made it even time saving!!! XD
+1 rep!!!

Drats, i can't... dang...
But i'll keep it in mind, for sure.

Well, Elite certainly cannot be a "dad gamer" game, because dads usually have no time for gaming, and Elite demands a lot of time investment just for the mere basics. So it has to be a "gamer gamer" game, because only actual gamers who have nothing more urgent to do can afford the time to get really good at and truly enjoy it.

Does my logic sound ok to you? Looks like it for me...

Old dadgamer!
Not a dad
Oh sorry, old gamer!
I'm not old, I'm 37!
I couldn't just say Gamer.
You could call me Dennis.
I didn't know you were called Dennis.
Well, you didn't bother to find out, now did you?
Well I did say sorry about the ...
What I object to is you treating me like an inferiour.
Well, I am a gamer.
Oh gamer eh, very nice, and how did you become that? Exploiting the developers by hanging on to outdated imperialist gamerism which perpetuates the economic and social differences in our society!

And I'm 43 really :)

OP speaks the truth. Its not an "insult" , its just a statement. Generally older gamers arent as "hardcore" as younger players. I know its a broad statement but it does apply heavily to many of the forum users here. As we get older, games take a backseat. Focus more on career, put in less hours, its only normal. But with less hours your game intuition begins to rot and micro skills begin to decay.

Whilst older gen gamers have a wealth of knowledge to draw upon, whether it applies to ED or not is the question. If you haven't been effectively playing games to a min/max style ( META ) then you're already not a "gamer gamer" , you're now a "dad gamer".

I'll be falling to this category soon, not quite yet but my free time each year slowly dwindles away...

Interesting. What is "hardcore"? I'll take my 17 year old son (heck, throw in my 25 year old too). Both like the fast-twich FPS, or hang out in League all the time. But again, what is hardcore? Both hit the world's repository - the Internet for cheats, hacks, how-to's, instructional guides, and pro tips. A big distinction for us old timers that didn't have the internet back in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. We ground through, learning as we went, and amassed our knowledge. Gaining advantage through scripts, hacks, exploits and others wouldn't meet my definition of hardcore.

Now, given the lack of guidance for this game, this gamedad has done a bit of both - I jumped into the ship with the "official" user guide, learned how to fly it, and then ventured off into the black. I'll still hit Youtube to figure out the BGS.

Is it a matter of preference that I'm not into fast twich games? Absolutely. Does it make me less of a gamer? No.

And as a father (and grandfather), I don't need to wave my epeen around to show the community how awesome or hardcore I am. If you're hardcore, cool - it's an open sandbox. If you're a gamerdad, cool as well. I hold any type of CMDR in the same regard - play your own game (yes, even to the griefers out there).

most of the anti pvp sentiment has come from players personal experience of pvp.. so how exactly does that make it naive?

Because anyone who has played MP games since, well since they came out knows how it plays out. The fact anyone is in anyway surprised screams naivety.

Got my free bus pass last year so I can flaunt it at the youngsters on the bus. I could be a granddad, but my offspring are off being sensible in Uni. I love strategy games and I know, this ain't one of those. I'm a lifetime biker from age of 16 so in the summer, I tear around the countryside on my Fireblade, dodging the cops.

My point is. Any one can play this game. Age has nothing to do with it.

now see this made me laugh hard.. and really does highlight the fact, that age and wisdom don't always go hand in hand.

you started by proffering a gross generalisation about the massively diverse gaming culture that exists within our global society. this diversity covers an entire spectrum of gaming platforms and game genres, being played across many age groups and nationalities, by both males and females alike.

yeah it was silly of me to say "this game is exclusively populated by robots who all think alike". Oh wait I didn't but yanno, this thread may be changing my mind. I generalised and expressly said that I was both gamer and dadgamer, so ... hmmm. Are you saying you don't like classifications or generalisations. Not that the idea of "gaming culture" isn't an arbitrary, generalised classification at all ... seperate in some way from broader culture or society ... oh wait, yes it is!

now at 1st i thought your generalisation was merely proffered as a purposefully 'inflammatory' starting point for this discussion. however, this reply right here, shows that you actually think you can condense all the above into 2 clearly distinct gaming mentalities.....

No, you did that in this crude pastiche of what I was saying you just created so you can easily demolish it.

i cant even.. you cant.. really?

Apostrophes! Without it can't becomes cant, "hypocritical and sanctimonious talk, typically of a moral, religious, or political nature."

Ah, my mistake. Cant it is, though not from me!

About the truffles, I don't care for ransoms, really.
As for the misses... well, ummm.... let me come back at that once the morphine wears out, too complicated at the moment...

i couldn't have put it better myself..

so if the anti pvp sentiment comes from personal experience (that is experience, not inexperience) again i ask, how can that be considered naive??

There's a difference between having to explain it to people, some of whom don't even seem to have read it, and making sense of it :p
Fairy nuff.

Here's my problem with the OP:
In a way one of the reason for the enthusiastic support such games get from some of their devotees comes from the inexperience of their players. They think the game is the best thing since sliced bread, but don't have that much to compare it against.

Since I'm an explorer, and we're possibly the most positive of the ED bunch (and perhaps exactly the kind of players you got in mind), the people I talk to who love this game are all experienced gamers. There's been many hours wasted in game while flying to distant destinations talking about all sorts of games. They absolutely don't fit the profile of inexperienced gamers. The forum posts also reveal this.

So, if we're talking about the OP, I have a lot of anecdotal evidence the claim made is quite a way off. But it reads as if you're just having a gutfeeling about all this, since you start: "This is the impression I get and I think it's a big problem for ED", so maybe it was just a feeler post. Luckily, it only is a problem for ED if your impression is right, and from where I'm sitting it's not. :)

But I'm open to evidence why it is.
