And what if the game code detects a lack of connectivity to the ad servers?

There is mention of in game advertising acceptance in the t&c therefore Frontier have really been planning Elite as a McDonalds promotional vehicle for 30 years that requires always on connectivity.

Frontier < EA < Satan

Although it worries me a little I do not believe for a second that David Braben will let his magnum opus get maimed by immersion destroying advertisements.
Does anybody?

Well, unfortunately the fact they aren't saying anything at all about it rather forces us to speculate and draw our own conclusions.

I'd find seeing a neon coke ad. on the side of the space station immersive. Coca-Cola may or may not survive till 3300 (probably will). Let's just say it does, with all that real estate on the side of space stations and traffic going in and out and waiting for clearance, someone's going to slap an ad. on it! Especially in Corporate systems, maybe the rules are different on Imperial worlds. An updated tag line like "Coke is the future" for funny.

They could also be more subtle like having specific makes of vehicles running along those roads in the space station, having certain brands of computers in use at traffic control, food cargo canisters with brands on the outside when you scoop them up, or just have Corporate skyscrapers we can fly around with logos on the side. How about Virgin Galactic shuttles appearing in low orbit?

Those would not be too intrusive for me and if they pay for servers - great.

What some people need to realise is that FD have to make money SOMEHOW to keep the servers running, and as they're a commercial company with shareholders, make a profit too.
So far, there has been indignation expressed at:

Micro-transactions
In-game advertising
Subscriptions

If these ideas are so abhorrant, then suggest a better alternative.
And no, future expansions will not cover it - because they cost money to make in the first place.

They also get money from the sales of the game. Whilst I'll have no doubt that retail box sets will be available in the shops I'd suspect they'll sell a lot via digital downloads which means Mr middleman isn't taking such a huge cut. Its perhaps early days but if they sold 1 million copies thats a lot of money too.

Nobody is forcing us to do anything of the sort. I realise that doesn't stop some people but I see that as their problem rather than mine.

In the station hanger there are some very subtle billboards that the ship passes.. these are currently advertising made up brands, however I assume these would be the type of in game advertising once replaced with real brands.

I find them harmless as they are placed where you would expect in-station adverts to potentially be.

They are linked to the lore of the game. For example Zogan Peterson is a ship manufacturer which makes the Fer de Lance.

I doubt this was the intention, I think it's perhaps a little easy to take two and two to make five. Frontier are fleshing out the Elite universe with new fiction and immersion and people really think contemporary products will be rammed in our faces when we dock? Compare the meerkat maybe? Or adverts for PlayStation and Wii U games? I can't see it, this reeks of reused standard legal terms being recycled from previous games with the thought that maybe if there is potential to monitize some time in the distant future, they haven't closed off an option. I bet countless other games have similar snippets of delightful legal jargon.

Some people? :p

Since it caused (apparently) some consternation in the alpha forum, and some here, it might be nice if FD could comment on their plans (if any) regarding in-game advertising, something they have decided not to do up until now.

If it was done well it could actually add to the humour and fun of the game... imagine a Compare the Meerkat advert on the hanger wall with Sergai in a astronaut outfit with the slogan insure your Cobra with us!

Well like I said I HIGHLY doubt they'll add real world adverts because it simply won't fit into the universe. They would be shooting their own foot. They just won't do it.

In the worst case you could probably create some kind of ad block filter to get rid of the ads.

I think people are confusing this with a F2P game where you would normally expect such ads. Remember, Elite was the most expensive title when it was originally released, and ED seems to be leaning in that same direction just based on the Alpha/Beta pricing model.

ED is all about being prestigious, elevating it above other titles which rely on such methods to generate income. Let us not lower ourselves to their standards. By maintaining the existing high pricing model we can both avoid common riff-raff, and those horrid ads they target.

We are Elite.

We create the ads ... we do not consume them.

:p

I refer the gentleman to the answer I gave some moments ago :)

if there was 'real' advertising, i'd like it to be a bit jokey tbh

"mcdonalds - the taste of the past" or "even though cows have been extinct for 500 years, our burgers still taste the same"
"take 2 bottles into the sonic shower?..........."
"want to get that bluey-whiteness back into your flight suit, you need ......"
"had an accident on the mission? not your fault? the galactic justice squad can get you 100% compensation!!"

ofc DFS would still be having a half price sale

Yes! +1 :D

Someone mentioned back on one of the early pages of this thread, that it might be for forms of advertising on the game launcher. You do see other games, MMo's etc doing this, where they may have links to news, patch notes, related ads etc (sometimes 3rd party etc).

This sounds more reasonable to me to what that EULA might actually entail.
