There are no stupid questions only stupid people.

The police could well seriously damage other ships and the station though. Especially if you are docked.

So, if someone goes on a kill-spree the police should just sit by and watch, in case they scratch paint? That's not how it works, I'm afraid.
The police we assume are trained to take their fingers off the beam laser when it's pointing at a station. :)
When the US enforced a np-fly zone over Iraq, they were allowed to fly in it, to enforce it.

And try equipping two missile racks then make sure when you deploy them you dont have enough power, the whole ship shuts down but the missiles then discharge and take out your engines, if you are in a cobramark III making slef destruct the only option if you have noo self repair. Hilariously bad design feature.

Are you talking power or heat? You may have fried your own ship with heat [ie was the AI going mental at you with overheating warnings]. Ultimately, it's your own responsibility to adjust power priorities after being warned about it.
If it's heat overload, then heat management is just something we have to manage. The ships will let us cook ourselves if we don't ease of the triggers sometimes. But sometimes a bit of self-cooking is needed to avoid being killed by an external factor. We *want* the ability to red-line our ships -even at the cost of damage - in critical situations.

As to self repair, I'm afraid this one is down to a lack of familiarity on your behalf: There ARE self-repair mechanics in game. You can buy an auto-repair system (AFMS) in the outfitting section. They're not really for 'combat healing' though. Mostly used by explorers), or alternatively stuff can be rebooted on the right hand side systems screen.

Frontier
Wanted criminals or enemies of enemies of the faction could seriously damage other ships and the station as well. If you are docked, enter the hangar.

If that's the case you should report it as a bug. Calling it a hilariously bad design feature just makes you look like a troll.

Goading people into calling people trolls over an opinion isn't a very good path to wander down.

There may be times where a player does not know what is and is not a bug, especially newer players. Rather attempt to humiliate them for whatever gain, educate them.

Why does ED require much other programs to play it well...
VOICEATTACK
TRACKIR/FACEREACKNOIR
CORIOLIS SHIPYARD
INARA
ED TRADE PROGS
FORUM
NOTEPAD PROGS
SPREADSHEETS
PEN & PAPER

(Highlighted) As far as I am concerned, these aren't exactly programs

The rest, I don't use them .. and I play the game well.

It should show the change in the FSD stats at the bottom of the screen, tbh without being logged on though I couldn't say whether it does.

It shows the percentage change because you might want to move it between ships. A straight value would be annoying for that purpose.

Here's my tuppence:
VOICEATTACK
Nope.
TRACKIR/FACEREACKNOIR
Just useful really - the 3D scanner gives you enough information. FTNOIR is poor anyway, and doesn't work well with background lighting. I prefer Opentrack and FreePIE on a smartphone strapped to my head.
CORIOLIS SHIPYARD
Again, not necessary, just fun to play about with when you're supposed to be working.
Never used it.
ED TRADE PROGS
Never really used them - most of them are outdated by the time you get to the really juicy routes they throw up, especially now.
I use the forums more for community interaction; I wouldn't call them necessary to play the game. They're a good place to shoot the breeze when you're supposed to be working.
NOTEPAD PROGS
Nope.
SPREADSHEETS
Only indispensible for the masochists BGSers, I guess.
PEN & PAPER
Nope.

Why can't I have a second commander slot without having to pay for it ?

If you check the forum, there's a few lengthily threads for this one.

tl;dr: FD are a business, and it wouldn't make financial sense for this to do this when people are often happy to buy a second third and forth copy of the game. They would literally be cutting their own purse strings.
qv: Why when you order a drink at the bar does the barman not realise that you're going to want another one and so give you a second, free one?
There is also the feeling that it would allow players to have a 'griefer commander' or three on their account, rotating CMDRs to avoid facing the repercussions. A lot of people disagree.

Yes to play it well.

No, it doesn't! To play *optimally* or *more efficiently* maybe, but not 'well'.

Well...apart from a pen and notepad. That really helps and has done since the original game. I don't see that an issue; to do a job well in the real world, I need to have a pen and notepad too. I always have a pen and notepad near me when playing anything other than the simplest of games.

Not at all

Oh I don't know, I had a tip off to a complicatedly named system the other week.
Pen (okay, pencil) and paper needed to transfer that to the navigation system.
Better systems integration would be nice.

Also, for me, more sleep - I might get away without the pencil and paper then.

Calling someone a troll when it's entirely likely that the developers know about this, since most people do, is trolling in itself.

this has been in the game from the start and has never been fixed, even though clearly they designed it that way. That says to me extremely bad design.

If you designed a ship that would destroy itself when it's power centre was crippled in combat, would you be proud of it?

Missiles just exploding because your power settings are wrong, taking out your ship?

I've been playing Elite for two years, and have absolutely no idea what you are on about, I'm afraid.

I doubt that the goal of this thread was to get answers. Changed the troll part anyway.

The only stupid question is the one that is never asked, except maybe "Don't you think it is about time you audited my return?" or "Isn't is morally wrong to give me a warning when, in fact, I was speeding?"

Jack Handey

Nice one. Repped.

Jack Handey is always good value, so lets venture off topic, for just a moment, with two more Handey greats:

"Before you criticise someone, you should first walk a mile in their shoes. Then, when you criticise them, you'll be a mile away and you'll have their shoes".

"I can picture in my mind a world without war, a world without hate. And I can picture us attacking that world, for they would never expect it."

:)

[edit]To be very specific, this...

As to the above also shooting out of the toothpaste tube like a white bullet, should really be more harshly fined, although you have to say it is hella fun in a cobra.

Can you please explain what this is all about?

I've just this minute deployed weapons, with...

- 2 x Seeker Missile Racks.
- Power Priority adjusted so deploying weapons shut the ship down.

Nothing exploded.

Never heard of this, sorry.

Yes this game DOES require outside information to play well. The game does a TERRIBLE job at communicating information to the player. Having information intentionally obfuscated from the player for the purposes of difficulty is not good design. The same goes for any piece of software a user may install.

Since the information isn't displayed well newer players can and will feel forced to go to outside sources to do halfway decently.

The only outside information that is required to play the game is the manual. People stopped reading manuals 10 years ago when even FPS got quest markers.

(my Stupid) Q. I can't seem to bring myself to quit this forum for ever. If you have successfully managed to quit these forums for ever, can you tell me how you did it?

Why does sometimes when you navigate inside a solar system, the reticule target not appear until the FSD is engaged?
(Other Q's already answered)

Because there's little point in targeting something that will take several days or more at maximum speed to get to when you only have enough fuel for a few hours at most, and your oxygen will run out a few minutes after your fuel does.

My stupid Q (to skydiving instructor): Why is it called a jumpsuit?

I have a lot of dumb questions about Elite, that really don't need to be posted in one thread, but I will anyway.

1. Why are the police allowed to shoot in no fire zones, especially if you haven't threatened anyone or don't even have your hard points deployed.

2. Why is the speed limit for entering the larger space station 100 kms^-1 but you can blast out of the hole like a bullet from a gun when leaving the station at 400kms^1 which IMHO is far more dangerous, and no one cares to give you a fine even though you are clearly a bit tard.

3. Why does sometimes when you navigate inside a solar system, the reticule target not appear until the FSD is engaged?

4. Why if you buy a missile rack, and then over power your points, do you end up destroying your own ship? Surely there should be some sort of safety feature, even if you have been a little short sighted.

Feel free to post your own list of petty questions, that probably don't need an answer

1. They are allowed to do that if you are wanted in that system and they find out through scan... At that point, station will start engaging you too.

2. First off it's 100 m/s not km/s... 100km/s is supercruise speed and i would like to see you dock like that :D... As for the speed limit, I just ignore it... I get into the station at around 250 all the time.

3. No idea what you mean... Bug?

4. You need to manage your power in the modules section of your right-hand panel. When setting up your ship, you need to make sure that once you deploy your hardpoints, at least priority group one remains within the limits of your power plant otherwise all your systems will shut down until you retract your hardpoints (This means everything, including stuff like thrusters and life support). a short youtube search will surely get you to a video tutorial explaining this mechanic in more detail

Reading the manual somehow excuses UI readability now?
It somehow means the information delivered to the player is worthwhile and concise?
Is the manual going to tell them that the high tech system two jumps over is going to have the module the player wants?
Who is to say that the manual actually has the information that the player wants to know?

Calling out quest markers is just name dropping at this point, because it's an easy strawman. Nobody wants their hand held, but having a consistent tutorial, and UI that actually has useful information attached to it in a cohesive manner is a GOOD thing. These things are a matter of clearly communicating things in a way that makes sense. Stop making generalizations.

Honestly, just stop, I made this account originally to post on the bug report forum, and then I see discussions like this where players vehemently defend things that could be considered bad design. I would avoid this place and this game's subreddit at all costs at this point, because any sort of thing contrary to popular belief gets shut down.
