Do you think its random, ie. any station anywhere, or could they have been consistently related to Sirius or some other faction? Also, any idea how long this has been going on? Is it a new thing or it was always like this and I never noticed :)

I can't tell, but I'll pay attention again (is what I tried to say)... once I'm back, I've been dragged out of ED for a few days.

Might be worth using the debug cam to have a look inside the Engineer hangars.

I spotted some of the same wording on some floor panels at Palin's.
They've spent a lot of time on making the bases unique - might be a clue or two hidden there.

Someone on the UAs threadnought has just suggested an experiment by taking a UP to one of these large wreckage sites to see if anything happens. Are they permanent USS, or random? If permamnent do we have locations?

All random, but easy to find. If you get out of the shipping lanes and inhabited systems they are very common (or maybe it's just that other types of USS become less common).

More firmware:

Specialised legacy firmware
Legacy firmware 0.23
[Install package]
User of this software on unauthorised systems is prohibited by law.

Exactly what I need to get dirty drives for my iEagle...should i install it? What could go wrong?

Well, you're in the right place to find out! :)

Edit: I do find it a little sinister that many of the Engineer upgrades involve modified/special firmware, and we're finding a load of wreckage sites with datastores that hint at software problems.

while the engineers involve modification of devices and in my mind it also makes sense that the firmware is modified, I haven't seen a single reference meaning specifically upgraded firmware.

That said, I've visited only 3 or 4 engineers so I could have missed pretty much all of these references if they do exist :)

The engineers don't require firmware specific version numbers, but they do need specific types of firmware for quite a lot of upgrades (list), some of which you get off these wrecks (the last one I found is a material component for L2 dirty drive upgrade).

Interestingly, you can 'roll back' modifications to your ships hardware via the modules panel. This means that you lose whatever bonuses you have, but perhaps we might want to do that for other reasons in the future :)

So pieceing together what I've read.
And also having seen one myself

Here's a thought...

Perhaps a station like Jacques was making a trip.
Perhaps it had a small fleet of escorts.

And maybe just maybe during a jump through wytchspace, something happened to the fsd,and it's firmware?
Perhaps whatever it is they detected?

I don't think they even managed to jump, all messages say: we were almost about to jump but then I got an arrow in the knee..

Hi peeps, just wanted to add some observations I have made over the last few weeks to this thread, its nice to read something on these forums which has the potential to bring the community together in this way. Ok so what I've seen.....

Firstly there are lots of damaged ships about.... far more than there used to be.
Secondly they keep appearing on planets I'm prospecting and getting in the way! lol

now I normally find DBEs crashed on the ground and larger ships blown away in space...... however in every instance I have encountered personally (and with my wing mates) these ships seem to be carrying similar cargo types..... agricultural items! The USS's I have found have mass amounts of Bio-Waste, Grain, Food Cartridges, Fruit and Veg, etc. So have the ground DBE's too, with the addition of Explosives and Nerve Agents (maybe pesticides?). We have had many of these USS's with mass amounts of cargo, some with rescue teams at them, but always with these types of cargo....... what does it mean? <Twilight Zone music starts>

I am curious if this links in some way to the outbreaks which recently spread across the bubble, these outbreaks seemed to come from food sources, maybe that is why they are being shot down or blown up?

Soz if someone has made this link/question before, if so -rep to me and +rep to them :D

I wonder if this is part of the Generation storyline- sounds like a load of folk shipping stuff with which to start farming new worlds. Perhaps they tried to farm a world already belonging to someone/thing?

Alternatively, I recall that in 'Lave: Revolution' Dr Walden was trying to ship deadly contaminated grain to the Empire/Feds, which led to their involvement in his demise, but there could well be other Walden clones around with similar agenda, so choose your storyline & look for evidence to support/contradict it.

Do not adjust your sets ... FD are in control ...
mwahahaha (maniacal MB laughter while he's stroking a white cat)

Another firmware message today:

Modified consumer firmware

Flash upgrade for consumer firmware
File archive for [Firmware update patch]
This firmware update is not suitable for use on secure of military grade devices!

I guess someone didn't read the instructions :D

Maybe of interest: Stopped at an "encoded emissions" USS. There was no private beacon, but I found an INTACT Diamondback Explorer. It had a few scorch marks but nothing serious. The canopy was intact, but no pilot as if they'd been snatched or something. And it was playing the same creepy gothic music you sometimes get from wrecks in the private beacon sites.

Nobody home:

I found one with the canopy intact and I was excited as well, then I got really close and I could see the broken glass. Well, in my case, I don't now yours.
My bet is, if it doesn't have a seat, then it was ejected.

Yeah you were right, I found another one and it's so broken it's hard to see the remaining glass :)

I found a new message today, I think it's clear now that a serious security issue exists with ship computer systems. There is definitely a problem with malware infection via firmware updates; probably also via data packages (see below). It also seems clear that external agencies can connect to and take over ship systems, but we don't know if these attacks have been against malware-infected targets or not (seems likely). There is some link to FSDs, maybe they are the component targeted in the attacks, but someone has found an issue that FSD manufacturers won't want to be public knowledge.
