Now you're talking sense!

I agree with others, though - the networking will be one of the biggest sink-or-swim cases for SC-the-MMO. They've made some pretty mighty promises for the kind of gameplay they can achieve!

Definitely. I'd just like to hear firm details of how instancing will work. If you have 20 ships in an instance and 3 people EVA from each ship pushing you well past the 64 cap - what happens?

If things are split off into neighbouring zones (that are transparent for all intents and purposes) I can only imagine it being a nightmare to track missiles or whatever from one zone to the next, and yet that is the only way they can accomodate large fleet battles.

5 weeks until CitCon.... I should force myself into purdah as these next few weeks will be exactly the same as the build up to Gamescom :/

Presumably there is still no concrete release date for 2.6? I can't believe CiG would drop it into the open alpha without an avocado testing period beforehand? 2.5 went through 19 near-daily updates before it was on general release (2.5.r?). If 2.6 needs as much polish as 2.5, they will have to be putting it out the door in the next 2 weeks?

Ok, as the request for the arguing was ignored I'm closing the thread so everyone can calm down a bit.

When it reopens, please stay on topic and stop arguing.

Sorry to those who are actually trying to have a discssion on the game.

Ok,

The thread is now reopened, keep it civil and on topic or the thread will just end up being closed again.

Thanks.

We often team up with people from the US, Australia and Europa, just it is not perfect, yes we sometimes have problems, however a few relogging and it normally works.
Could it be better? of course it could, however I'm sure FDEV are trying to make it work as good as possible. It must be a nightmare to get all the connections to work when people are connecting from very different places. SC can hardly make it work over LAN!

There was a huge representation how their entire server works. Was pretty interesting

Edit: Damn i am to late for that whole thing...

So... anyone wanna bet how much of the Gamescom presentation will be contained in SC Tech Demo 3.0 (If you mind that I'm using the "Tech Demo" bit, it's either that or "Baby PU", and that is a terrible name)?

This one single mission will be there. It will be called revolutionary by the SC crowd. More money will be spend on jpgs.

But it'll be a mission that nobody has ever seen before!

It'll be a high fidelity, immersive, engaging experience, with a script by CR himself, and possibly even featuring Famous Actor BL, if he can spare the time from development. It's going to be unique, and special, and innovative - there might even be a helmet flip ;)

Missions where you have to do something in the SC universe like for example switch on a comm array puzzle me. Imagine if 2 people in the same instance accept the same mission or a mission that includes the same action how will that work? I understand this could work if it moved you to a new instance so effectively you had your own comms array, but as I understand the new network code there are no instances. How will they avoid you taking the mission and the action is already done by someone else.

It's 3.5 weeks isn't it? It's intriguing what might be shown given the lack of visible progress.

...If 3.0 can produce stable instances of 24 to 48 players / ships, it will begin to show real promise as a foundation to build a game on.

What 3.0 delivers seems key for me, in all regards and not just the netcode.

3.0 represents the first major delivery with Erin reportedly being in charge of delivery for long enough now to start showing real results, and given his track record, I would like to see what comes. Giving this release a new integer suggests that it should (and needs to) represent a significant improvement on all things 2.x.

I'm hoping for the best, but expecting something in the middle - only time will tell.

Without wishing to poke a sleeping bear, is there a firm ETA for 3.0 dropping?

As a minor aside, I don't see the refund money thing as anything more significant than a statement of fact mixed with a bit of emotional bribery, although it feels misjudged to me.

Ah, but you're mistaken, for they're working hard on building solid technical foundations.

End of this year. Its going to be exciting. For me the only real question is whether or not they make significant progress in game-mechanics towards being a real game. If they give me 1-3 mo-cap quests and one planet to land on then they're clearly going nowhere. Enough with the vertical slices already, lets talk meat, make tough choices and start implementing the core features of the game. Yes, no matter what CIG decides people will get upset and go ape online, but its either that or never release at all. Citizencon doesnt interest me much because its probably going to be more polished demos and vague promises. If they can have me see the foundation of a game on my own pc then I'll be convinced.

Interesting, being his brother he has a unique position to be able to slap CR to get him out of 'promising everything' mode. Hope it works out (any idea who is the older brother?)
