The Star Citizen Thread v5

I guess welcome to the harsh reality SC fans! ;)
I expect more and more similar topics after more gameplay mechanics are introduced and a lot of people dreams about perfect game for them will be scattered...
Because history likes to repeat itself, like it was with Elite I still remember positive ED forums before release of v1.0...

Hahaha, I remember that vividly too. In fact, some staunch proponents of the it's-just-a-vertical-slice theory during ED's beta/gamma are now dissing SC cultists in this thread for doing exactly the same thing ;)

I came late to the forums, but even in the couple of weeks after launch day, the repercussion on the "missing fabled internal build" was still white hot... Some people never learn :/

Things were alot more polite before the floodgates opened to the great unwashed.
Those of us who were in alpha, beta (and gamma) did question the direction of FD all the way through the process, and yes there was a general positive buzz about the whole thing - we were going to get a new Elite game! Many of us had been praying for it for over a decade, an even just an updated graphics version would be good enough for us. For my part, I feel that I pretty much got the game I thought I was backing when I pledged in January 2013 (everything I expect from Elite is in Elite Dangerous), and I feel I've already had my money's worth (£200), with still yet another season of content to come at no extra cost for me. At the same time, there are aspects of the game that I think are "pointless" (e.g. PowerPlay) and have no relevance for me - but it's FDs vision of the game, and I'm sure for every feature I don't like, many others will love - such is the way of things.

The forums grew in negativity as soon as "Johnny Random: Entitled Half-wit" started appearing and re-hashing all the arguments (with much more vitriol) the rest of us had already been over and discussed the previous year (nerfed yaw is a classic).

They're clearly speaking from experience then. :)

I didn't really have any set expectations for ED so it was all gravy for me. I can still remember the buzz of the 1st alpha download - hitting start then realising the joystick wasn't plugged in.

I didn't know what to expect with ED (Fine, I'll stop with the colon... although that does remind me of I: with the colon and all) so it was a blank slate. I downloaded beta and gamma and played a bit. Maybe about 20 hours total until this past April/May when I've racked up a little over 300 hours of game play since. I bought the Expansion pass (I think that's the lifetime but it doesn't say it so I dunno but I didn't have to buy Horizons) the first time around in 2013 so for all about around $160 (including premium beta access) I have all of ED. However, as can be seen by the fact I barely played the game for over 2 years, from putting money in, I have no problem waiting. When I did play ED I saw some pretty good stuff, I just had a busier life and other games I was enjoying more. More content came out for ED over the next year and I began enjoying it more to put more time in.

I have a real good feel for when I can expect a game to be good or to be terrible, I've been involved in a lot of the latter over the years where I got in early and it was just bad. Development was off the rails, management clearly had no focus, things were being done on the fly, and I'm seeing it all again - not with ED of course but with the "best everything" tech demo. Basically, if there is a solid foundation being built out but it is lacking in terms of content it is most likely going to turn out good but if it has a bad foundation, like no space and glitching through space doors leads to space under pants so its clear the focus isn't on realism/fidelity, then it is just going to be built on top of a half-gluteus maximus foundation.

Star Citizen in bad shape? [squeeeee] I think it's doing quite nicely. Improving year by year with more content more funding and more backers/players.
Since you seem know some facts to make your statement to appear as one, could you share with us some stats for our evaluation to see if what you said is true? For example, how many backers never touched in the game or do not play it regularly? How many asked refund? What is the number of people that signed in their website that actually bought a package? And what is the slice between the money gathered. It`s coming from the old whales, new whales, both, or it`s balanced between the number of actual backers? And what is the number of actual backers?

Its the same fate as duke nukem expect star citizen hasnt switched the engine and restarted the progress yet.

Well... kind of... they tossed away 2+ years of development because it wasn't compatible with their frankengine that forked off (and is forked up) CryEngine 3 so it may as well been a switch.

To be fair - I am one of those who believed for ED 'vertical slice' theory, all thanks of considerable vacuum of information during second half of 2014 - mostly because FD was just building their community team. Basis of my belief was because David used this term to describe Alpha builds. We had little to no information what will end up in 1.0. We weren't aware of seasons nor what will come in 2015. I don't think we haven't been critical towards FD about this. Only remedy was FD really showed continued efforts for game during 2015, and that mitigated some of disappointment.
