I didn't know what to expect with ED (Fine, I'll stop with the colon... although that does remind me of I: with the colon and all) so it was a blank slate. I downloaded beta and gamma and played a bit. Maybe about 20 hours total until this past April/May when I've racked up a little over 300 hours of game play since. I bought the Expansion pass (I think that's the lifetime but it doesn't say it so I dunno but I didn't have to buy Horizons) the first time around in 2013 so for all about around $160 (including premium beta access) I have all of ED. However, as can be seen by the fact I barely played the game for over 2 years, from putting money in, I have no problem waiting. When I did play ED I saw some pretty good stuff, I just had a busier life and other games I was enjoying more. More content came out for ED over the next year and I began enjoying it more to put more time in.
I have a real good feel for when I can expect a game to be good or to be terrible, I've been involved in a lot of the latter over the years where I got in early and it was just bad. Development was off the rails, management clearly had no focus, things were being done on the fly, and I'm seeing it all again - not with ED of course but with the "best everything" tech demo. Basically, if there is a solid foundation being built out but it is lacking in terms of content it is most likely going to turn out good but if it has a bad foundation, like no space and glitching through space doors leads to space under pants so its clear the focus isn't on realism/fidelity, then it is just going to be built on top of a half-gluteus maximus foundation.
