Yeah, she beat it. But it was rough. Breast cancer is no joke.

No doubt. Cancer itself is a . I lost my dad 3 years ago to lung cancer, he was 67. It's just awful, and that is an absolute understatement. Have to kill the body to hope to kill the cancer cells, that's the best we have right now and it just sucks. Congratulations to her, and for you supporting her through it. I know it is absolute Hell! Best wishes to you, her, and all of yours!

Yes, it's horrid and takes a huge toll on the family. The downer was that in all her years of screening, they never detected it. Then just like that, she decided to go for some advanced screening as part of her yearly physical. And there it was. Good thing it hadn't progressed too far along, was on a single breast, and no mastectomy was needed.

Thanks for the kind words.

Is Sq42 totally going to be on rails between cut-scenes or will I be able to fly around, kill baddies, and do some side missions in between (freelancer, skyrim, etc)?

The funny thing is, should SC fail...what do you think the headlines will be? "Chris couldnt make it" or "Derek Smart was right!" what has more impact ? :p

Environmental angle: Many whales die as they throw themselves onto California Beach!

Save the Whales! (from themselves). :p

What if whales are beaching themselves to force evolution to take over humankind? What if the SC whales are going cult-pod to become the domineering voice in all further game development that we don't understand? Games will no longer be interactive, they will be imaginative - the best game you can imagine, just keep throwing money down and you can imagine it for just as long as you keep throwing the money down!

More juicy stuff from the Agent in dark place.

confirmed

  • sq42 cutscenes have now hit over $60m to be produced (this includes the mocap work, VA work, stunts, shoot time, internal cleanup of the scenes, character modeling and artwork)
  • "[The quality is] Not even close enough to okay." - Chris Roberts, 28/9/2016
  • ^ this was mentioned to me awhile back, but I couldn't believe it. the two people I talked two and leaked the previous (now confirmed) before the kotaku uk piece was released, so I trust them
  • they are trying to find things for ben/alexis/lando to do
  • their positions are winding down and will be terminated aka transferred
  • there's been some problems getting some streamers paid (again)
  • the new troops had a visit from roberts (unknown contracted studio)

So far Derek your story sounds plausible - Lot of SC Alpha 3.0 demo felt taken out of story mission of SQ42. So they though it would be cool to build small demo on SQ42 assets - and CR just went being himself and declared it 3.0 and implied it can be released at the end of the year (he even didn't say definitely). It seems like he is twisting lots of words to make people interested again about SC as they have JPEGs to sell.

As for SQ42 costing them big time with mocap and production in general - why would even anyone doubt that? CR essentially wanted interactive movie there. So him going overbudget over mocap sounds highly likely. Also you can even argue it makes sense from business POV as SQ42 is first out of gate and should sell a lot for CIG to continue operations.

Yes, you can - quite successfully - argue that if less money more carefully would have put into SC itself we would have past MVP by now.

I don't know. How believable is that? They spend a humongous amount of $60M on cutscenes (that's a LOT!) and then it isn't even good? I mean making movies is CR metier, he sucks as game dev project manager, but why should the cutscenes be bad? Making cutscenes is nothing exceptional, there is no new tech to be developed, lot's of experience out there. This should be the "save" part of the project, where it is easy to impress. And they did make a lot use of this with all these shiny commercials.

Well, after Wing Commander movie and leaving game development he was a movie producer. I'm guessing he is probably taking a crack at being a director and is getting lost in the details. I feel sorry for their editor, or is he that too?

If you don't have your mocap studio/know how, then it will get you multiple cost increase (figuring out pipeline, hiring right crew). Also simple mocap vs. Full body facial mocap, artistic style changes, etc.

Yes, but didn't he work with the Gollum Guy, who is the industry expert on MoCap? How can you deliver something bad with this kind of expertise in you back?
I honestly always expelled that SQ42 will have at least technically brillant cutscenes with cheesy content.

TBH CR is better at creating games (as opposed to managing their creation) than creating movies.

Also nothing in any of his franchises, Wing Commander onwards, is in anyway original to someone who's well versed in sci-fi tropes.

Thought: If CR has put so much effort into cut-scenes I can see them being unskippable or otherwise intrusive/gameplay wrecking.

A terrible constantly refactored script? Bad direction? Lack of good preplanning (again due to constant vision refactoring)?

But this is supposed to be the straightforward part, right?!
You write a script. -> You check out the required tech. -> You hire actors. -> You do go to a MoCap studio and record. -> You put in in the game.

Edit: Maybe i should get a refund after all. $60 is still $60. Can buy the new CoD for that money.
So, what was the best approach to get a refund again (KS backer here), i remember seeing howtos hundreds of pages back?
