The Star Citizen Thread v5

sorry but what showed last night was totally another level of details that outerra doesn't have it.

and i don't care about the rotation of the planet and the physics, it's a game ... that's what you always forget: it's a damn game.. not a real thing.

i was hoping to see these things from Frontier and (surprise) i see a 3.0 (or 4.0 whatever) season in StarCitizen.
that's why i say 'overtaking', that's why some days ago i was asking a preview of what we expect in the future with Elite.

It's a matter of 'hopes' that Frontier won't give to us anymore (it seems so (at least, for me)).

But is it a game? Can you download it today and *play* with it in some kind of entertaining game form?

It's impressive how excited people get about stuff like this so recently after this wasn't what we got.

The atmospheric planets give the game such a fantastic atmosphere whereas Elite is always black in black.

I agree that ED needs planets with atmosphere you can land on, the thing is, the atmosphere is not hard to do, people have rendered great looking atmosphere effects for as long as there has been GPU's around. What's hard is the weather systems and it's undoubtedly why we can't land on moons like Titan yet. Getting good looking and realistic cloud systems is still taxing and difficult.

ED's current focus is realism on planets and moons without atmosphere. Here's what the moon looks like (picture by Yutu - the Chinese rover): http://i.imgur.com/9dfK0pK.jpg

That's how "exciting" the moon is in real life. All in all ED does a great job on barren planets.

lovely textures though. I really can't deny the lovely textures.

Heh. I can say one thing for certain; by the time SC releases those textures will be nerfed into the ground. With the texture quality SC currently uses the final game will be several terabytes in size unless they start downgrading geometry and texture sizes.

Just caught up with this - they really are pushing the backers patience with this stuff.

Wasn't expecting too much but it sounds like they managed to not deliver on pretty much everything.

Though some people seem to be impressed with the planet tech demo - not seen that yet.

It's a dessert planet with some trees. Not too bad but you whizz by very fast so can't see much. The trees seem to suffer serious popping problems as well.

Serlino they showed a scripted demo in the crytech editor, it even looped at one point in the stream
The whole thing was on rails, it's not game play let alone the game.

Oh and sandworms ripped directly from Dune.

<snip>

Well, I guess we have very different ideas as to what constitutes a "space sim". To each his own...
Out of interest, what do you think is in CIG's proc gen that's missing in outerra?

The "road map" is now similar to the ED release Alpha stages. Frontier had Travel & Trade, Docking & Outfitting etc. They have mining & refining, farming & rescue etc..Which is a good approach and about time.

However, I don't think they will deliver them at the same rate as Frontier did and there isn't much in the projects history to convince me that they will get them out over a year as Roberts tried not to suggest. I reckon we're looking at one per year. It might give an indication of how long there is to go, if we only having "mining & refining" by the end of 2017 then we're looking at a 2020 release of the MVP, and it'll be interesting to compare progress as compared to what people called a "bare bones" release of ED content.

So TheAgent posted a bullet point list of behind-the-scenes rumour-milling regarding the upcoming CitCon showcase.

Here it is...
  • people were still working round the clock to get the sq42 demo done, but
  • they had to "sneak" around their work hours because CIG already had a finger wagged at them for employee overtime, this is illegal as heck btw
  • the sq42 demo will feature areas already seen in the gamecom reel
  • 2.6 is still MIA, will be most likely be folded into 3.0
  • all work on SC has essentially stopped, whole company is pumping out SQ42 assets/gameplay
  • the majority of time is still spent on getting cut-scenes/in-game character models to function correctly
  • SQ42: prelude release timeline still set for early 2017 (expect a lot of cut-scenes)
  • expect a "ton" of loading screens in SQ42
  • several rewrites and reshoots have happened in the last two years, expect a lot of change from what we've seen
  • there will be different ways to level your SQ42 character and npc wingmen
  • citcon is "heavily SQ42 focused"
  • purchases for single player items will "carry over to the SC experience"
  • "SQ42/SC are now a single, unified, seamless experience"
Now then, how much of what was outlined here actually appeared on that cut back as heck, 2 hour long snorefest of a presentation on Sunday?

As I have said before walking around and interactions are very jerky, very unpleasant to eye. Maybe it is different when you play it.

Certainly not in 2.5 Alpha. All interactions - i.e. <<<USE>>> are as clunky as ArmA, have poor "zones" in which the interaction option becomes active, and the animations (like getting into your pilot seat) are not stitched together very well, with some odd results on times. It's low-level annoyance stuff.
At least, that is my experience.

That is an *extremely* optimistic take on that Zee.

2120 maybe, but not 2020. :kappa:

I saw the sandworm and thought "Looks like Chris watched those early NMS videos and said "I want that in my game!"

More like "Looks like Chris just finished binge-watching a bunch of classic sci-fi films and saw the Dune sandworm, had one of his Roberts Brand Brainstorms Of Ultimate Creativity (TM) and loped into the LA studios, walked up to an exhausted and near-broken developer and hand-waved his intention for them to work on putting some sandworms in that SQ42 demo ASAP".

You guys are just bitter Croberts put Big Game Hunting in his game before David Braben did.

LOL! If only it was a game to start with :D

BTW, I don't care if the sandworm thing is ripped off Dune, will it be a fun thing to have in the game (if we get a game) is the only aspect that concerns me.
