The Star Citizen Thread v5

Having watched the footage back a few times, I can say that it certainly is a visually appealling collection of scripted set pieces.

I do have some concerns over how truly dynamic the weather and giant sandworms will really be.

Yeah, after life you mentioned planet being like earth:

If you meant by that 'earth analog where cyanobacteria already holocausted all other life through oxygen generation', sorry, misunderstood you. Still not guarantee to get same evolution. If there was no comet killing dinosaurs you would probably be using fangs to write that

Yep so from the start I was talking about an environment like ours. So no goal post shifting, well except on your end. Like I have said multiple times, it would not be identical.

I think i finally collected myself enough to comment on the whole citizencon stream.
Tldr it was dark comedy as a whole.

-stream late for 1 hour
-audio issues
-stream goes down 4 times

-Chris claims that star citizen production started back in 2013

zsXCbIP.png

-Sq42 development started in 2014 the same year it was supposed to get delivered.

-announcement of "spectrum" New revolutionary social app .... basically discord with battlenet stuff in it.
-nobody clapping at the spectrum "johnnys not going to stage again"
-polaris Ad again hardly nobody clapped. Derek Smart laughing devilishy on his stream
-No squadron 42 for citizencon
-No 2.6 star marine for citizencon Still 2 weeks with no trailers. Maybe we shall see it next year
-star marine will feature loot drops. (loot crates anyone?)
-3.3 "farming module going up, before research and science module, before other systems come to online
-jump from 3.3 to 4.0
-arena commander changes from gamescom got changed in citizencon.

-planetary tech v2. A lot of horrible pop in and horrible framerate.
you can even see the ground textures pop in as the guy walked around the scene.
-scripted encounter with Tusken Raiders.
-the ai cant adjust its guns only shooting forward
-oh Shai Hulud cameo. I wonder if they have rights for that
-nope not scripted cut scenes at all.
UZeDKlL.png

-CIG playing cutscenes twice by accident. It seems like it didnt import properly into youtube version, but no worries derek smart has backup ready ;) they should ask for it
https://www.twitch.tv/thedereksmart/v/94027347?t=46m43s

-Editor stuff nothing special just typical editor. Someone pointed out planet tycoon version of this that makes more sense, and is more intuitive to use.
-when they played star citizen in editor runtime resources didnt move over 100 megs staying steadily in 11 gigs, no matter if they were in empty space or on planetary surface.
-no re-entry effect on ship jumping from 1 atmosphere to another atmosphere. They didnt even bother to showcase the sulfur planet in editor.
-awkward chris singing happy birthday star citizen.

And thats most likely not all of it ;)
but this post is already long enough reading :D

Well I just watched the CitCon presentation and what can I say..... I was very underwhelmed.

Usually CIG are really good at putting on a slick demo (Gamescom) but this was really flat I thought.

There wasn't anything shown of for Star Marine even though it supposed be coming out in 2.6? I would have thought showing that off would have been a huge selling point?

SQ42 delayed which is no surprise in all honesty as they haven't shown off anything from it apart from that Oldman speech.

The PG planet? Some aspects of it were really nice I have to say, there were some really nice shots, but overall it felt quite generic and a bit cut and paste. What I mean by that is that the landscapes seemed a bit haphazard and jumbled up, and overall the geography didnt really seem to hang together that well.

I can see the appeal of doing a Star Wars/Dune mash-up from a geeky point of view, but it didnt say anything about the game they're trying to make, it just kind of came off as a bit daft I thought.

By the end I was left thinking... is that it?

Not at all what I expected and I can see from the reactions online that its left a lot of folks with concerns.

They really need to do something quickly to pull this back or it could start to slide and turn a little ugly... :(

Holy wow, I quote your quote to which I replied starting this whole thread and it is about life:
I would say because life likes to evolve in much the same way
vs
I was talking about earth like, and even said that. You started talking about life.

hah! that bad, huh?

I couldn't find his prediction post so I didn't want to come across as being equally hyperbolic. Anyway, what was shown was below what most people expected, even critics like myself expected a little more than what was shown. Not changing any minds there...but, that isn't the point, I guess. Squeeze the whales and rope in a few more basic backers to bolster metrics...that is what this is about now.

I do have some concerns over how truly dynamic the weather and giant sandworms will really be.

I could be wrong, but surely none of it is intended to be dynamic/procedural?

Based on the demo, the intent is to:
- procedurally generate the basic terrain of a planet.
- then pick a 10x10 km area, and change it to a specific biome (textures/roughness/random rocks etc).
- within that biome add e.g. a landing pad, a crashed ship, 2 crabs, a sandworm and a sandstorm trigger.

AFAIR that is basically what was described originally - that the procedural generation was only to help them generate planets.

I think it was 1hr 8mins in before they stopped talking about StarBook :/
I just realised what the presentation reminded me of. CCP, circa 2010, when they were slowly running out of steam trying to get Walking in Station up and ready for its catastrophic release. They tried to divert everyone's attention with new forums and the introduction of EVE Gate as the “integrated community hub” kind of thing.

It didn't really work that way. CIG is like a less competent version of that, with less ambition, and far less experience of actually releasing something and running it in a live environment.

Oh yeah...that website thingy. I was watching it off and on while I was watching Sunday football.

Oooh, a message board. They spent a year on that? Holy flarbs....I'd have been fired 3 times if I took 1 year to build a message board. Who is this contractor again? So I know to blacklist them in the future...I've dealt with too many charlatan software contractors already.

What happened with EVE's spacelegs? Never got into it so first time hearing about this, any links that cover this drama?

Yeah, but it can be on a black OR white background with PM's, ain't no tech around like that! :p

Yep, and if you read the post, I said in the same environment. You know the environment that we currently have. And no you didn't start it, you responded to my post after all.

Just because you edited and opted to remove that part does not mean it was not there. It is your choice to ignore part of a post, just don't be surprised if it comes back to bite you.

Serious question: can someone explain to me what the issues are with these animations? I mean that's hardly groundbreaking tech. They did 20h MoCap, so the material is there. Everyone is doing this nowadays. What's so special with SQ42?
