The Star Citizen Thread v5

Trouble with this thread is someone says something farcical, or makes a stupid point in reply but by the time you get to it there's another 20 pages and you're way off context.

It's working - keep that dissent down!

If that was meant to be just a proc planet demo it flopped even more seriously - with the unnecessary gameplay elements it's just raised more questions and shown more problems even before considering we saw gobsmackingly little of a theoretically huge procgen world that we could have seen any of. It's almost like only the mountain/deserty bits work so we just saw a couple of types of environment

Proof that they've made no progress with the game itself.

Planets v2 is part of the game, so it is in fact progress. And the fact that they have only showcased that does not mean they haven't been doing other stuff. Remember there is a lot of people on CIG, only a fraction of them are working on planetary tech. The rest of them are working on other aspects of the engine, on game content, on assets, etc...

As i said there is progress, and it's being shown in a weekly basis.
If there is some people who close their eyes, put their fingers on their ears and sing "lalalala i can't hear you" then that's not CIG's problem. The info is there.

But not the downloads for us to try ourselves.

CiG and their supporters lie constantly about what they can do and what they've achieved. It's simply not worth paying attention to propaganda and false advertising.

If it's not playable it doesn't exist is the only sensible approach to take, by that standard Star Citizen remains just a tiny broken overpriced tech demo two years over it's release date.

I had 405 dolla in it.

Then I woke the hell up and refunded a few months ago after a protracted set of conversations, begging, and lying on the part of their "customer service" dept.

So glad (but sad on balance) I'm out of that mess.

When they fix that problem they have with the updater in which you download the whole game every update, i suspect the updates will be more frequent.

They explained that in a video. They have the game data packed in big paks, and the updater makes you download any modified file. Then, it happens that every update all the paks have modifications of the files inside them, which even if the changes are small, require a complete redownload of the pak. They said that they were going to fix this.

Keep in mind that every update they released up to now is about 30 gig bandwidth per user download. Let's say there are 500.000 users, that is about 15 petabytes of bandwidth, which i guess it wont be cheap. I think they said they will bring the new updater with 2.6 (if i recall correctly)

Which, not to sound like Derek, is what I predicted. :p Just hours before the presentation my guess was they couldnt show any real stuff, there would be no deadlines/dates for 2.6, 3.0 or Sq42 and they would try to weasle out of that withanother on-rail non-existent demo.

so whats in the planets v2 that wasnt in gamescom demo?
Where is the progress?

planetary landings is supposed to come out by end of this year?
And all they have is a scripted demo, that shows no progression over gamescom demo.

And do note that this demo was supposed to showcase stuff that we can expect by end of next year, because it contains so much stuff in it that it will not make it into 3.0 (it didnt)

Also heres more comedy.

I was in for a mere $40. I gave the account to a friend who was going to get the game instead of a refund, as my package has a lot of early bonuses. I've just noticed that the combo package is now $72.

I understand the technical reasons for why updates are a huge download at the moment, and I do look forward to CIG changing this to smaller patches. However, I do not agree that huge download sizes are the reason why updates are not more frequent than they currently are - I think it's because they have not had much to update to the playable demo we have (and that's because they have been doing other stuff).
If CIG are to be believed in their statement about really pushing forward with content creation and crunching through improvements much faster from now on, then it may be the case that they intend to ramp up updates to be more frequent, and that is the driver for improving the download tech.
We shall see.

CIG lags behind because they lack good, solid game design vision. "Everything must be cool" is not game design vision, it's how kid imagine sci-fi dream universe, not a way to build game around it. There's no constant and consistent experience. They are prototyping on live systems. That's why progress is so slow. Comparing to ED - FD had everything planned out. Game design, improvements to engine, engine ready to do bidding, trained team. CR had nothing. That's why I have been always skeptical about SC. You can't just throw money at it and make it happen. You can't buy experience of handling such big projects.
