The Star Citizen Thread v5

Not that I don't buy that list, but I positively hate it when people compile such things and don't have a reference for everything. Arguing based on it is arguing based on the person posting it and if they're not honest or accurate about it, it makes you look like a buffoon. Not to mention that in order to double check everything, you have to put in a good fraction of the time yourself that they needed to compile that list.

That's the beauty of star citizen, the author of the list is a visionary therefore proof, progress, sources and originality are not required.

Seriously though, someone did post a fully sourced list a while ago, but the sources were all CiG so it was links to endless marketing video's and INN transcripts. I think there's probably a self appointed keeper of the scrolls maintaining a fearsomely accurate list somewhere (complete with the original video's prior to "refactoring" and the new versions) but it would be beyond awful to wade through. There's so much sheer volume of star citizen drivel out there that even CiG can't keep track of what they said when.

Crikey $900 for a spaceship? Is this a new record? Chris Roberts continues to save PC gaming. =/

Also old news I'm sure but Squadron 42? Been saying for ages that SQ42 will be the litmus test, if they can deliver that and it's good then well there you go.

But I am now reading Squadron 42 has been delayed?

With a quote : "most of our base technology [for the game] is now complete".

Not finishing up or anything, they've nearly got the basics in?

I dunno, I can't help feeling it sounds like Sq42 is a long way off.

It also sounds similar to prevous Star Citizen quotes, paraphrasing from memory : "we are working toward getting the underlying framework together that will allow us to start building the game."

Reading between the lines this makes it sound like Sq42 is a long way off.

Don't worry, their development has gone through some troubled fluids, but now solid technical foundations have been laid in, it's only gonna ramp up.

You mean like robust AI routines have been developed? All gameplay mechanics are in place (professions), netcode is finally stable, and mocap animations drop jaws?

That's all in game, you just don't understand it.

Oh and buy a Javelin and save PC gaming, will ya?

I would have thought SQ42 is far more likely to see a "release" given its a self contained set of linear gameplay branches with no multiplayer. Also, Foundry 42 have had a big team quietly working on it. My assumption is that the PU is still as "proof of concept" as it appears, but all the staff in Manchester must have something to show for the past few years, no real reason to think that part won't come together given that studio actually has some pedigree.

I am concerned that CR mentioned wanting to add the PG Planet landing stuff in during his presentation. That doesn't sound like stuff you simply crowbar in if your thinking of a Q1 2017 release.

Q1 2017 is the release of the new "vision" where Genuine Roberts explains the need to abandon everything done so far in the name of fidelity and improved immersion ;)

Thats one of the very odd things about the SC community: its nearly all graphics-driven hype. Its not just that that is the only thing CIG shows, it truly appears to be the only thing SC fans care about it. It also appears to be the thing CR cares about. Constantly re-working visual stuff with almost zero attention to gameplay of any kind. 'fidelity' suddenly means 'high-res textures'. Now 'deep gamplay' also means 'high-res textures'. Can't wait for the superb farming with, I can only assume, amazingly high-res space bananas.

If anyone is curious about the next SC show, here's what you'll get: more high-res textures, plus vague promises of awesome gameplay in the patch after the patch after the patch after next patch, none of them having any release date but all of them coming 'really soon'.

So much this...it's all about graphical fidelity and when you make excuses for polish to FlM in beta you have a pretty obvious problem.

Pixar doesn't animate their films anywhere near print Rez...

Final fx shots in Star Wars probably come in a day before lock.

Gameplay is king where I come from. I had to use my imagination playing games growing up more than maybe some now.

CIG devs may only have one job, but if that is so, it certainly is not to hold their CEO accountable. Thats just not how things work.

I agree. Not very diplomatic at all. If half the stuff you read about Roberts is true, if you told him he was wrong, you would be down the road anyway. I have been lucky in having always been in employment. Must be very stressful getting laid off. Feel sorry for them if this is true.

There's no need to get too invested convincing anyone here that the demo wasn't as impressive as they imagine - the funding goals chart speaks for itself. The next few months funding are all on that ship sale - nobody was particularly impressed it seems. We've seen sparse planets and mountains, these are easy bits

Those charts could be a complete work of fantasy. Until they publish their accounts we will never know. As I have said before, they could be buying the ships themselves. After all, they are using other peoples money.

You mean /r/dereksmart

I do not comprehend that place, nor do I wish to. It is beyond me.

Oh, I don't know... They managed to make Cryengine look completely pants at rendering foliage - That's actually quite an impressive feat that nobody else has managed.

At least their PBR implementation and textures in general are absolutely on point.

I dunno, they have earned almost 3.5 million dollars, and we're not even halfway through October. And while I can agree that their funding meter doesn't include refunds, I think otherwise it's largely truthful. Seriously, regular f2p mobile games rake in millions, and they have no macrotransactions like SC.
