I tried using the ministick for thrusters but found it very bad. It seemed far far too sensitive and threw the ship all over the place for small inputs when trying to land or takeoff from the space station. I had to revert back to standard hat. I would be interested to know from anyone who has had success in using the ministick with thrusters how they set it up. I am not using the Control Manager software.

@Wrongway

I use the thumb stick for thrusters since I have the throttle and I do not see the issues you have. I don't use the control manager software and the throttle and joystick are not combined devices, they are used like two standard devices in Windows.

The one thing that comes to mind is that you should always map the axis to the device and not the individual directions. I did a similar mistake when assigning head tracking movement. If you assign directions instead of axis the movement will be extrapolated and you get some really weird head movement :)

I just assigned the axis as per usual, gave it a very small dead zone to help centring. It is sensitive, but I have 21 Dexterity on this character :D I've read a few others mapped an s-curve to it though.

I'll give it another try. I am sure I had it assigned as an axis correctly. At the moment I am swapping between Warthog and CH stuff to try and determine which I prefer. One big plus point was the analogue thrusters for me, which I couldn't get working properly.

You also probably have to put a generous amount of deadzone on the mini-stick, as it doesn't auto-center very well. But yes, it's awesome for the thrusters.

Thanks man, thats a great idea hadn't thought of that.
yes it does indeed seem not to center, almost as if gravity is pushing it down a little. Can you suggest a good deadzone value? ill try it tonight.. Thanks!

Hi Cactus,

We have a discussion thread on Joysticks.

I'll merge your thread into it

Killswitch engage joystick idea

Is there currently a joystick with a flip up safety over the trigger? If there is a cool mod would be to add an on off circuit that could replace selecting weapons armed from a dropdown menu. This would be an awesome feature that would cut down on deployment time.
The two contact points complete the circuit.

Instead of a toggle switch this would be covering the trigger until you flip it up. (couldn't find a proper pic)
If there isn't a joystick with a flip up safety over the trigger companies should add this feature just for elite dangerous and a new line of joysticks.

Saitek X45 and similar ones had something like this. :O

The Saitek X-52 and X-52 pro has a flip up latch to cover your fire button, however the latch is dead (it literally just covers the button).

My question is simple :

What is the best ergonomic HOTAS joystick for use with an occulus headset ?
Because i don't want to have to search for buttons or take down the rift for searching what button to press .
So what is the best one that is suitable for this type of use ?

I can only speak of the Saitek X55 Rhino from personal experience, but each and every button and hat has a distinct, unique feel (on the joystick) and obvious placement (on throttle too) it would be extremely easy to use "blind".

For instance, of the three hats on the joystick, one is concaved and curved, one is like a rounded pyramid (convexed) and the other is concaved with distinct raised parts in the top, bottom, left and right sections.

Obviously the buttons are in there own placement, and not close enough to accidentally hit the wrong one.

The throttle also has unique sliders, buttons and dials.

I'm sure other HOTAS have good placement too.

Ditto, If anybody has any info on what/which joystick will work best with OR headset.

Ok found links about Oculus Rift and joysticks, with possible imported controls images for ED.

The only way to answer that is first have access to multiple HOTAS devices and then learn the muscle memory for each.

Best to pick which you think will suit you.

And don't buy it on looks alone - in a OR you won't be able to see it.

Thanks, back to the drawing board, see edit on previous message, with OR options and imported HOTAS images in ED

How much 'Play' is there in your joystick?

I dont have a fancy Saitek (yet) but on my MS Sidewinder Force Feedback 2 I can move the stick like a few Cm's before it actually moves the ship. The deadzone setting in ED controls is all the way to the left but it makes no difference. Accurate aiming pretty hard. How about the new fancy sticks?

Effectively zero on my CH fighterstick : I have to set a small deadzone in the game.

Does going through the Windows calibration routine help at all?

If not, it could be that the potentiometers inside reading the X and Y axes are a little worn, and may need cleaning or replacing.

These PS4 Dualshocks are super tight compared to the XBOX Jr and XBONE Analogs. There is wiggle in the Microsoft sticks but not the Dualshocks. :D
