Yep, that's it in a nutshell. It's a community effort, using community submitted data. The highway concept is only really viable if it links up well trodden pathways... Like the bubble to the outposts, outposts to Colonia. Or popular tourism destinations. As that makes the time invested to chart them worthwhile.
Random pathways out into the black will probably only ever benefit those individuals that make them, so the time investment in charting those is indeed not worth it.
Yep, I'm also presently sat waiting for a ticket to be actioned. I closed down before ship was destroyed. Keep reloading to experiment to see if I can escape no dice. It's a turkey shoot.

Too late - logged back in.... Dead... back at Jaques. Submitted a ticket anyway. A lost of a couple of million credits and a couple of hours this morning. One thing with 47kly years out of the 23jumps most were supercharged and several were successive.
Successfully travelled to Polo Harbour not quite 83mins though, I think it took about the same time as if I had used conventional jumps. I may be able to get faster with practice.

When I first started doing this mapping, I didn't pay attention to the lines in the router. I just thought the fsd boost line was the max I could go. It turned out it was just drawing a line to my normal jump range so I was doing the exact same thing as a normal jump. Once I discovered that, things sped up because I'd ignore the line and find a spot ~90 ly out.
Was disconnected due to a matchmaking error while at a neutron star. Sent in a ticket but that means I'm not doing any more of this mapping. Way too much at stake to be killed by random events (my own stupid mistakes are ok). I have 1.5 insurances and so even if I log back in, I am down to .5 insurance and essentially stuck. Can't make money at skaude nebula so it would basically be a restart from scratch sentence all due to a disconnect.
Just tried to log back in anyway. Yes, I am back at the star and in the stream. Waiting for a response to my ticket before trying that again.

It's a bit of a nuisance this bug. I hope they sort you out.
Trip report: Colonia to Polo Harbour and Return.
Ship: FireClown 45ly Jump range Asp Explorer
Straight line distance: 4786.59ly
Number of normal Jumps 109
Estimated time normal Jumps: 1hr 48mins (based on 1 min per jump (post 2.2 - jumps seem to be taking longer perhaps 10-15s longer - so my pre 2.2 estimate may too short!) - no scanning.
Based on CMDR Erimus' route (with the odd modification for jump range)
Actual
Trip out :
Total Jumps 46
Supercharged Jumps 29 average length 156.8ly
Distance travelled 5058.58ly
Time 1hr 57mins
Trip back
Total Jumps 45
Supercharged Jumps 29 average length 153.8ly
Distance travelled 5044.06ly
Time 2hrs
Comments:
The return journey could have been slightly quicker as I missed out the first NS by mistake adding 4 jumps.
After reviewing the detailed data I did some scanning and the fastest jumps where about 1min 30s and the average was about 3min. If I remove the systems I scanned in the average falls to 2min - so 45 jumps at 2min is ~90min. With practice and a good route as Erimus has shown you could do this a lot quicker.
It was more fun than buckyballing the same route and for the same time slipped in some scanning.
I made a few mistakes entering the NS cones - none serious - usually entered the cone too fast and left it before the FSD had been supercharged, so had to do it again. - I found the best technique was to turn parallel to the cone and slowly travel into the cone travelling away from the NS.
Ok, a couple of questions that may be answered already by you good peeps, so if so, please point me there!!
1. What's the best and safest way to Neutron Star (White Dwarf?) boost, and
2. How many jumps does the boost last, and
3. I keet getting 'FSD Out of specification' type messages when in the cone (albeit perpendicular and heading into it). Hence, nervous !!

1. For NS make sure that you stop before entering system (press X on standard bindings while in hyperspace). I turn so I'm parallel with the stream and head slowly to the end of the cone/ stream (making sure you miss the star's exclusion zone ) Once in the cone you'll get the "FSD is operating outside of specification" message stop (DO NOT exit supercruise!!!!) and wait until you get the "FSD Supercharged" message. you can then speed up making sure that you are heading away from the NS. You will experience some turbulence which depends on the power of the NS (some have weak thin cones (easier) , some have fat strong cones (harder)). I have also enter the weak ones near the end of the cone and successfully charged the FSD - you get minimal turbulence.
2. Only one - but it will greater than a Lvl 3 synthesis jump. You will have to plot a single jump manually.
3. Is nothing to worry about it just means your FSD is being charged. Your FSD will be damaged every time you enter the cone and get this message - not by much 1-2% but if you plan to use many NS jumps to shorten a journey you'll need a AMFU to periodically repair you FSD as you don't want it to fail in a cone and be dropped to normal space ( and certain destruction!). I usually repair at 90% - not had any problem yet.
I'm currently doing the route the other way around: from Sol to Colonia, visiting all the outposts along the way. Here's one leg of the journey, going from the Lagoon nebula outpost (Amundsen Terminal) to the Eagle nebula outpost (Eagle's Landing).
I did this route in a 41.5 ly (full tank of 6T) jump range Imperial Courier.
Note that as neutron star density in the area is quite low, it's a zig-zagging route, not a highly optimized line. Also, you have to travel 350 ly from the Lagoon nebula to get to the first NS. The final neutron star on the list will get you within 169 ly of the outpost system.
However, a word of warning: the last one is a fairly dangerous NS! It has very wide cones and a rapid rotation, and you pop out a bit too close to the cones for comfort.
There is another neutron star close to it, so I recommend taking that instead. Better to add one more jump to the route than to add a rebuy.
Here is the route then, with the neutron stars in bold:
I didn't time how long it took, as I spent most of the time on the galaxy map.
Let me know if you need anything else! I'll post later legs as I reach the other outposts.

Waldovenison Smeare is making his way to Jaques in a 29ly Imperial Courier. He's just over half way to the first outpost. He's a bit slow as he likes to drive his SRV a lot. He mentioned that his plan was to use the NS highway as soon as he could.
Wow, I had no idea, that the outposts are already in place and operational. That said, it probably has no significance for me, since I fly an Annie. Otherwise, I'd definetly want to stop at one
I am currently on the way from Sol to Colonia and have to say, that I am very pleased with the neutron highway so far. It may doesn't spare so much time as I hoped, but is much more fun than jump'n'honk. I had one issue when I get disconnected and reloaded in normal space in the fumes of the NS, but I was lucky enought to escape to SC. I hope they fix this issue soon.

An excellent choice for an excellent Commander.
Just be advised that you should stop at the Lagoon to sell your exploration data first. Neutron stars are capricious, and while they do offer a boon to travellers, there is also a price to pay for their help. They hunger for blood, and will snatch the ships of explorers just as they would enter witchspace, to pull them back into their jets and feast upon their internals. Your Courier should get you out once if that should happen, but if you don't stop for repairs, you most likely won't survive a second time. I didn't.

Oh, I see! I didn't know that the neutron fields were this widespread: looks like there's no point in surveying direct routes between the six outposts then, when you can just dive 1k ly below and come back up where you will. That really is quite handy. Thanks for the update!
Hey folks. Update on the NS disconnects. FD saved me from a disconnect in a neutron star and advised staying out of them until the next update comes out. They say they have a fix for it internally.
I have just completed the Dangerous Tour around Colonia space.
It is made up of Neutron Stars and Black holes, and I am linking it here as away for you to connect into the Neutron Highway grid if any connect at the Colonia end.
