So what is it?

It's a rent in the space-time continuum.

The stasis room freezes time, you know, makes time stand still. So whenever you have a leak, it must preserve whatever it's leaked into, and it's leaked into this room.

Very first post was this one from November 2014 ...

Hi there, CMDR ALEC TURNER here. An Elite level commander from back in the 80's who's currently having his mind blown by his first few days on the Gamma release.

This one a little bit later is kinda interesting seeing as how I just bought an Oculus about a month ago and a GTX 1080 this morning!

OK, this is going to read like an alcoholics anonymous introduction but ... my name is Alec, I'm playing on an HP s5760uk PC which has an HD5450 and I'm having an absolutely brilliant time. Most of the time I'm getting around 20FPS and that is good enough to really enjoy the game (which looks glorious even on mostly Low settings). In stations (especially the modern white ones like the Coriolis orbiting Mars) this can drop to around 8 or 9 FPS and yes, that's less than ideal but honestly, is still perfectly playable. For me the biggest pain with these low frame rates is that the interface menus can be a tad unresponsive and the System map (for some bizarre reason) takes AGES to render. I appreciate that I'm missing out on some high end, almost photo-realistic graphics but most of the time I barely notice this. I know many people on this forum will simply say that these low frame rates make the game unplayable (not true) and that I should but a new PC (sadly I can't just upgrade the card as I think I'd also have to upgrade the power supply and then the case and that's WAY too much hassle) but I really don't feel it's worth spending many many £100s just for a game (even Elite!). What I'd like to do here (or in another thread perhaps?) is turn the discussion to how to get the best from a low end system without simply throwing money at it.

So, here's a few things about my setup which may help others in a similar situation. I'm running my desktop at 1024x768. Yes, I know that's low by today's standards but it's a hell of a lot less pixels to throw around the screen. I guess if you have a bit more than that (the game is obviously suited to widescreen) then it should still be OK but the number of pixels the game is having to manipulate is REALLY significant. I began with the Low graphics preset and then starting turning things back on incrementally to see what difference they made to the frame rate (press Ctrl+F to show the frame rate down next to the version number in the bottom left of the screen). Incidentally, it would REALLY help in this process if someone could explain what some/all of those settings mean. I've left "Bloom" off since I gather it's expensive and probably an effect I can live without. Ditto for Blur (which I assume refers to motion blur). I've got anti-aliasing set to FXAA. I believe this is to do with smoothing out jagged pixels by using intermediate colors along edges and that seemed worth having (can someone explain more about the different options for this setting?). I've got Ambient Occlusion Off (what does this do ... anyone?) and everything else set to Low except texture quality (the primary level of "detail" I would guess) which is Medium. I haven't yet played with the draw distance, I'm kind of happy with things now and Elite seems like the kind of game where you don't want to mess with that setting too much (someone correct me if I'm wrong).

One final note - I'm absolutely planning on getting the Occulus when it comes out. I'm pretty sure my old PC will NOT be able to handle that, at which point I will almost certainly be looking to buy a new PC.

Oh, and I'm also playing on a Lenovo X121e laptop. That's worse than the PC but you know what? still playable.

And finally, I think this is one of the very first threads that I started ...

Ah, I remember playing World of Tanks on a laptop with an I3 and integrated graphics. Good times on the 20 FPS stuttertrain.

A thread called "For the faction, or for the power?"
Yep, PowerPlay was the reason I joined the forums. :)

Hello, I have a question, Empire related.

Do the powers acknowledge the fact that they are on in the same nation? And since Arissa is Emperor, she should have at least some control over the entire Empire, right? And if not, what's the point of being an Emperor then?

And the real meat is here, in the following thread "Undermining within the Empire"

Hello,

So, I've been trying to undermine some of that Torval's control systems an I'd like to ask: do I really have to shoot at that Private Security, take down its shields, destroy its defense and then steal the cargo? I'm asking because I get negative reputation with the Empire and that seems weird.

Not my first post (can not access any more), but my first thread (08.10.2014):

Right now (and if I didn't get something wrong – which might very well be the case), the 'pirate-mission' from the bulletin board is solved by hopping from USS to USS, hoping that the RNG is gracious and the sought-after criminal finally pops into your weapon range.
But each USS encounter has the same likelihood as the previous one and you may spent ages without any sight of the villain. This may lead to frustration and is possibly not the most interesting way to implement this potentially exciting mission.

Therefore, I want to propose the following game mechanic:

- Like now, each new USS has a certain chance to find the searched pirate.
- However, the likelihood of a success is related to the information you gathered regarding the pirate's whereabouts.

This information can be gathered:
a) In stations by visiting the 'pilot's federation' and “asking” for news. (A related new tab appears; but only if you have accepted the pirate-mission.) Additionally/alternatively there might be a notification in the news-channel about where the pirate attacked a ship.
b) Whenever you meet a 'clean' spacecraft in an USS, the 'communication-menu' offers a question regarding the pirate.

All information has a time stamp and a location.
- The time stamp say “*name* was seen 5 days ago near...” or “I was attacked by *name* 3 days ago at...” or “Yesterday , police forces...”
- The location indicates the position where the incident happened and refers to a planet or a station.

The closer you come to the pirate (by flying to the most recent location), the more up-to-date the information you gather will be. And the closer you advance towards the latest sighting, the higher is the chance to encounter the pirate in an USS.

With this game mechanic, you might actually have the feeling of a real pirate hunt. A hunt where you can actively advance towards your goal and not just relate on sheer luck while entering one USS after the other.

I think this could be fun and rewarding. What is your opinion regarding this proposal?

Really an old post. :)

But while pirate hunting has changed since then and definitely got improved in the meantime (no more blind USS-hopping), I still think, something like the suggestion might be interesting and fun.

Apparently this is my first post on the forum 18/4/2008 -

It's a nice idea but don't you think that everyone at Frontier Developments is already very busy with other projects and would'nt you want them to concentrate on Elite IV and get that out to us ASAP. FFE 2.0 would only delay what we are all waiting for.

Thanx

Well said.

I'm a backer of SC, and purchased the ED pre-order. Looking forward to both games.
I still don't get why some people are so vehemently against one or the other. It's like the iphone vs. android arguments. If you like one, why have to hate the other??

Here is mine from 04/01/2013

Many many years ago I was home from work with Flu. Eventually I felt well enough to get out of bed and was looking for something to banish the boredom with. Then I remembered that I had just bought this game 'Elite', so I set up the tape recorder, Spectrum and TV and loaded the game up.....

12 Hours later I had to turn it off and go back to bed!

So now, through another bout of flu, I have been watching the KS comments whiz by and the Pledge totals soaring to 1.5 million.

I just hope that when the game gets released I am healthy!

See you all in the forum and later in-game

Can't find my first ever post, but I did find my first ever thread (that I started) here it is !!!

I do not want to sound ungrateful or pushy, but I think that the system in place for the updates .. i.e. answering a couple of questions once a month (if we are lucky) is not inspiring too much confidence .. since the Kick-starter we haven't had any gameplay footage, I know we have seen some ship models but none in action.

I would just like to see a little more, Sorry FD i do have faith .. but ... answering a couple of questions from the forums and finding out where DB get's his jumpers from isn't really an update .. to me ... sorry ,my bad .. i'm a bad, bad man ... .

I had the 48K
Loved taking out them Thargoids
Hope I get the chance to buy an ECM

Totally agree OP.
It's been there since the start. The only competitions required you to play OPEN.

Hey guys,

Old timer from the ZX Spectrum/C64 days.

Just getting to grips with this incarnation of one of the best games I ever played. I can tell already that it will probably captivate me as much, if not more than the 1984 epic!

look forward to contributing to the forums and in game where i can.

Hello Commanders.

I`m a long time gamer and a big fan of the franchise, especially my beloved frontier and FFE that i play to this day every couple of months.

I have been visiting the forums for a couple of years now, even before kickstarter, just never bothered to join and write posts, so I know most of the long time posters and their post history.

Having said that, unfortunately, I am one of the disappointed backers and to be honest I`m probably mostly here to express my concerns and fight the ongoing "white knighting" or whatever people call it these days, because i feel its damaging to the game, the kickstarter ideals and consumers overall.

As we were told by The Man himself the key to success is "to under promise and over deliver" but as it often is in life we ended with the opposite and both FDev and the most involved fans are to blame here.

Yes, I went there. A huge part of my disappointment can be attributed to some of the more active forum members (I could write exactly who what and where but that would solve nothing and would be against the rules) who assured me and many others on youtube and "the other game`s" forum that the DDF is a set in stone feature set for the release, that my concerns (that at that time were few and very mild) are unwarranted, uninformed and silly and that i should expect greatness and nothing less. Well so i did... to my disappointment

To make it clear, my complaints are not formed because FDEV didn`t make a game to my likening. Sure If I were to decide I would rather choose a single player Frontier: Elite IV with stardreamer and full Newtonian flight but I accepted their direction before pledging and I am fine with it.

My disappointment comes from FDEV`s inability to materialise their own plans, visions and goals, the lack of features, lack of promised richness - basically the horribly unfinished state of the game that is evident across the board from ubiquitous spelling mistakes through missing ships and kickstarter rewards to the missing ironman mode and multiplayer features.

To brighten my post a little I have to admit that there are things that are really well made and that still gives me some hope for the future of this game. Most of the things that came in before PB2 are very well made. The flight model is great, the controls responsive and the dogfighting engaging and fun (I recognise that despite my personal preference), the graphics engine is pretty good (could be better but that`s not that important) especially considering the amazing scale and realism of the universe (many things are astill misiing though), and the sound design is probably the best in the industry to date. As many have stated, the base is here... but its no longer a beta for it to be acceptable

This game requires a lot of work. Much more than many here imagine. I would say judging by progress so far that they would need to double the development efforts this year to give us a real finished 1.0 before the end of 2015

As far as expansions go I would not expect any this year. Maybe some super simplistic in-ship activities.

I also no longer believe that Frontier are able to create proper planetary landings expansion with fully explorable planets and EVA. What they have shown in the procedural department is very lacklustre (I`m a huge demoscene fan and procedural generation fan so I somewhat know what is and what isn`t possible).

To use D.B.`s own words it feels very "samey" because "[...] the artist provides the ingredients, and so if the ingredients are varied enough then so is the end result" "[...]it`s the content that comes from the artist that makes it feel different" and this is where FD fails so we end up with "[...] BAD procedural generation, we see cities (in this case the galaxy) going on forever, we see things where you can see the patterns that are too simplistic, its to obviously computer generated [...] essentially it`s bad art if you like"

I have never imagined my introduction here would look like this but reality bites hard.

I hope they will get their things together and deliver. But my hope is getting fainter and fainter every passing day.

27/01/2015, 8:11 PM

They have redeemed themselves a bit in my eyes in the PG department with the planet rendering, and i feel that despite many technical limitations and problems the general height map creation algorithms create quite believable large scale planet features in most cases

As for me.. I`m still just as bitter... I never thought that i would feel really angry and sad because of a video game... Guess Fe2 made an even bigger impression on me than i thought... or maybe its just that i have let myself, just for a short while, to dream just like a little boy but the reality immediately struck me down with a hammer

For some reason, none of my post prior to March 2015 appear. I joined Aug 2014.

Oldest I could find for you.
Default One Bindings File to Rule Them All
+1000

This suggestion was exactly what I was looking for. Adding "commands" to bind against (eg. the current "DeployHeatSink") would be a boon. The devs don't even have to add them in the UI, we can text edit them.

Some examples I'd love:

OpenGalaxyMap
PowerToggleShields
PowerToggleDrives
PowerToggleDockingComputer
PowerToggleWeaponGroup1
PowerToggleWeaponGroup2
PowerToggleWeaponGroup3
StationRefuelAll
StationReloadAllAmmunition
StationOpenCommodities
StationBulletinBoard
LockPreviousDestination

Actually, if it's a function in game, it should be bindable...

Dangerous
Default Leaderboards and Daily Achievement Titles
I did a search and could not find anything but I do apologise if this has already been discussed.

I was wondering if ED will be implementing a global leader board and database.

If they are the things I would like to be recorded is

Combat Categories

Enemy kills
Total Kills Deaths
Bounty Collected
Bounty per Kill
Kill Ratios
Missiles Fired
Missile Hits
Missile Accuracy
Gunshots Fired
Gunshot Hits
Gunshot Accuracy
Kills per Hour
Deaths per Hour
Gunshots per Hour

Miscellaneous Categories

Net Worth
Experience
Rank
Launches
Landings
Insurance Rating
Missions Taken
Missions Completed
Mission Success Ratio
Credits per Hour
Launches per Hour
Duty Hours

Also there should be Last 24hour achievements like most experience gained, most kills, most money made and a title given to each player who has done the most in the last 24 hours. This title is visible after a persons name and only lasts 24hours.

A game I played a few years ago had this and I found it very rewarding when I had a daily title even if I did not play it enough to be top of the main leader board. The daily titles mean anyone can get recognition of the hard work they have put into the game even if they start a year later than others.

Does anyone else have information that they would like stored on a leader board or do you think this is a bad/unnecessary idea?

AJ

He has never recovered.

It's the reason we blame him for everything.

This is the earliest my search threw up. It appears as though I made my debut in the Thargoid & Fer de Lance

A dishevelled old man enters the bar. The cloth bag dangling from his hand must be heavy. It makes him walk lopsidedly as he makes his way to the bar. He heaves the bag onto the bar with a loud thump.

"Frank's the name. Just staked my claim. There's ore in them there asteroids. Man can make a respectable living from mining. But you gotta watch for the snakes hiding in the rocks!.. Honest work sure builds a mighty thirst"

He tips the top of the bag over and worthless rock chips cascade onto the bar surface. He has a hopeful look in his eye "You accept rocks?"
