Community Event / Creation Buckyball Racing Club Presents: Kick the Alien (and run like hell)

No - I'm not joking - NINE MINUTES AND ONE SECOND!

I spoke a while back about hoping we'd get a whole range of skill levels competing in this race, everything from a 1 to a 10. Well that's a 10!

Cmdr Relooops totally smashes the 10 minute barrier (10 minute barrier? Hell I didn't even know the damn thing existed, I only knew about the 15 minute barrier) to claim 1st place in a buggy who's name might be "Ready to Serve" (or was that just a salutation? having some translation difficulties here). Just incredible ... congratulations!

Can anyone possibly challenge that? Well maybe ... only a few hours after getting Relooops time I received Tannik Seldon's submission and it's another stunner - 9m 51s in a buggy called "Cratermaker". Brilliant driving again, I genuinely would not have believed that times like these were possible.

I somehow doubt we've heard the last of these two. Tannik will be desparately trying to conquer the "brutal" hill climb back in order to shave those last 50 seconds off and Cmdr Relooops must be looking over his shoulder and wondering if his position is quite as unassailable as it might have seemed (plus, I don't know about him but that 1 second? that'd bug the hell out of me).

Meanwhile, back amongst the mortals ... after much tumbling (and some absolutely brilliant race commentary as always) we've finally got an entry from Cmdr Inga Stevenson. A perfectly decent time of 21m 53s which lands the feisty "Prospector 1" in 5th place.

And speaking of tumbling, ufo.mesh has found the perfect name for his SRV and rolled the "Tumbleweed" into 6th position with a time of 22m 27s.

Brilliant racing everyone! Have a great day today and (unless I do a 2nd update later in the day) I'll be back with a new scoreboard update tomorrow.

Drive safely (LOL, yeah right).

Quick question: Does anyone know if intact barnacles are still around? I failed my first attempt because my SRV went boom (after reaching the crash site in 5 minutes! :'( ), so I'm looking for barnacles to mine for mats, because I'm lazy.

The planet the wreck is on has Nickel and Iron for repairs.

And 9 minutes! Just improved my time by 4 minutes and I am still 7 minutes off lol.

I made another run this morning, and recorded it this time. Despite feeling like I lost control less often, my time was actually worse than my first completed run.

Video is being uploaded to YouTube, and should be available in about two hours.

I'm on my way finally. I wanted to wait until I had unlocked Palin before heading back out this way, but Qwent was proving to be a tricky... so and so... to unlock and level. Finally I did it this morning, so I am now on my way out to the area.

Intent to race:

Cmdr: Ozric
SRV Name: Little Blue Dune Buggy
I want to take part in "Kick the Alien" because ... I've tried everything else I can think of.

Oh and I think it goes without saying that I won't be troubling the top of the leaderboard.

Hmmm, so I travel all the way out there, thought I'd fly and have a look at the capital ship first (as it's been a while since I've seen one). Strangely enough all the ships were green, even though I am not a friend of the empire, just as I had got close enough to get a good screenshot they all turned hostile. I barely had time to register what had happened. Sodding Imperials.

I believe you do get a tiny bit of warning in comms prior to them turning on you but yeah, as has been mentioned, the Imperials I hired to do some race marshaling for me have turned out to be a bloomin' liability.

Did you manage to escape? (best bet is to hot foot it back to the research base, land and get inside asap).

P.S. I've decided to abandon the whole recording whether the run was done at day or night. I thought it would be easy to tell from the middle screenshot but in practice it's not. Also, with the thing on Friday night where I would have called it day but Inga said it was really dark ... It's all just too subjective.

Nope, 10% hull by the time I'd turned around, so back to Jameson for me. The most annoying thing was the exploration data I was saving up for Palin, but at least it was only a week or so's worth.

It really depends upon what your Gamma setting is.

Here's my normal Gamma setting:

Here's the setting you recommended (AKA night vision mode):

Makes quite the difference, doesn't it?

edit:

Oh, and still haven't beat my first competed run's time yet. If I can at least get competent with my "flying SRV technique," I should be able to. Had a bit of difficulty on the return trip this time, though I got to the crash site in under 10 minutes. :)

Well I thought that I'd just throw myself in and see how it turned out. I got about 1Km out from the base and got into a spinning episode when I recovered and pointed the right way I just saw an SRV go flying over my head, I hadn't noticed any other Cmdrs around, targeted them and it was Cmdr. relooops  Well they had a massive moment somewhere along the way and then I had one too, so we actually arrived at the crash site at around the same time. However not far into the return journey I heard a pop '1 contact lost' :(

Commiserations cmdr, although I believe we crossed paths as I was about to reach the station.

Well passed a couple of times :) My second run was going to be a lot faster, until I hit a rock 300m from the docking bay and blew up :|

Ah hell, I feared as much. I had actually considered posting a warning in the OP to say that entrants should land at the base before going to check out the crash site (with this exact eventuality in mind). Sorry. To anyone reading this ... consider the fate of Cmdr Ozric to be your warning. Also, you might want to consider your insurance rebuy when decide which ship you're going to use to travel out here in.

Sounds like Relooops is pusing hard to shave that irritating extra second off his time. That's the spirit.

Relooops was already going hard at it when I visited as well, and AFAICT continued after I logged out. He's certainly earning his podium position and incredible times. :)

I haven't worked out what triggers a response. I flew through the ring on the capital ship twice in my clipper and didn't provoke a response. Later I came to a hover just behind it and the clipper escort opened fire. Luckily I got a away.

Hello all ... hmmm the 7 min perhaps not for me , I hope for 8 min but I need to be very lucky..

Ride hard , It's a good day today not raining and the sun come...

Broke his phone.
I submitted my time of an 8:02 as a provisional final qualifier. idk if i can beat that, especially in VR. its a bit terrifying in VR. Nookie is somewhere in the 7min range, he thinks he can shave more time off. i might be able to dip under 8. we shall see.

Made all the 27 jumps required in my Keelback, only to find myself in front of the unexplored main star in the unmapped system of Pleiades Sector AB-W B2-4...with only a couple of (heavily crippled) Eyeballs Mk I as scanning suite. Luckily Maia is just 4 jumps away...

People here talking about breaking improbable time barriers, and I can't even manage to find Noctac-Northcrack-Nocctan-Watchamacallit Research Facility...interesting times ahead [yesnod]

Great times, I can't wait to see the vid so I can see what I am doing wrong lol.
