Has interest in 2.6 died that quickly?

US time zone maybe.

"SC was just never all that popular with the twitch audience. It was always struggling to beat the odd nostalgia stream of Doom or SMB"

LOL

Being that CIG are developing 2 full games and 2 mini games within a game (AC, SM) and when looking at the history of game development I would say they are right on track.

The development cycle of Final Fantasy XV began in 2006, when it was a PlayStation 3-exclusive spin-off titled Final Fantasy Versus XIII, which lasted approximately ten years.

You make it sound like a good idea to develop 4 interdependent (mini) games from scratch with no experienced team and no underlying engine.

Cant yet Rep you Slick, but yeah... double standard is staggering combined with the usual intellectual dishonesty of SA graphs that supposedly show "something" [rolleyes]

Which bit of the "graph" is dishonest then? Perhaps you could break it down for us?

No need to. CIG are building the game in the order CR feels is the best order. His order of building said game may not agree with alot of people but I think thats the point of him building his game his way (mistakes and all, delays and all) and others building theirs.

But if CIG is doing something groundbreaking, something that has never been attempted before, how can we deign to compare it with precedents?

If we take them at their word (because they are the ones who have all the real info), then they fall short of their own timelines and goals.

If we take this project on what will be, then it's just purely speculation.

If we take the project for what is accessible NOW, and compare it to what they have accomplished thus far, it's very lackluster.

I don't think I will be able to find a link, but there was some mention of a terraformable gas giant somewhere in the SC universe.

Develop the tech far enough, and you can compress a huge planet out of a Gas Giant in Master of Orion 2. Maybe Chris played that back in the day.

Star Citizen currently has 221 viewers on Twitch.
Elite Dangerous has 201.

Not bad for a boring & shallow niche game released years ago vs a behemoth of the gaming industry that just gave access to a new content patch to a lot of it's playerbase.

The only comparison we can logically make is the amount of time it takes to develop the product compared to other product of the same nomenclature. I suppose you could compare time scales of different products like how long it takes to build a car compared to how long it takes to build a video game, but that wouldn't make for interesting discussion.

No. They're developing one game, with a special single-player campaign sidetrack to get more out of both the engine and the art assets, much like you see from the likes of DiCE and Infinity Ward/Treyarch.

The development cycle of Final Fantasy XV began in 2006

…and was stopped in 2012. It was then restarted, with a new engine and an attempt to salvage what content their could and turn that into a new and pretty much unrelated game.

The only comparison we can logically make is the amount of time it takes to develop the product compared to other product of the same nomenclature.

Ok. So after 5 years and with a staff approaching 400 people, CIG has no completed game mechanics or art assets; no vertical slice; a handful of game mode test cases, and tech demos. We can compare this to other multiplayer space games like EVE (6 years, a couple of dozen of guys in a loft, half the time spent just on securing base funding), or ED (3 years, one of six projects spread over 300 people).

So, what's taking them so long and why do they need so many people to do it?

LOL I think this statement speaks against the point you are trying to make.

Whilst I do sympathise with your plight a part of me feels strangely re-assured that the bugs are still there.

It's what the game has done well since day 1 a year ago when whatever it was got released. They excel at PvB (player versus bugs).

Each time there's been an update I've been mentally rehearsing my humble pie posts in the event of a sudden attack of prgramming brilliance - I've steeled myself to get used to the lack of lols.

But here we are again - situation normal it seems...

Same here. I keep thinking that maybe, just maybe all this time and work will pay off and they will release a big point update that might offer a solid vertical slice of gameplay that gives the indication that solid progress is being made. Sadly that still isn't the case and the longer it hobbles on, the less likely it will be.
