Hi guys, I'm being tempted really for the first time by SC as a playable game. This thread is humungous, though. Is it worth playing in its current condition?

It is an alpha / pre-alpha with all the incompleteness and instability that entails. If you have $45 or whatever the minimum buy-in is and understand it is an alpha that is at least 1 year away from beta, then go fill yer boots :)

If you are expecting an "early access" it is more or less complete they just haven't ended beta yet" experience, I would advise you to keep your wallet in your back pocket and wait for a free fly weekend in January or whenever.

Impartial : Create an RSI forum account they'll e-mail you when the next free-fly thing is on. That way you cant try before you decide.

Non impartial : There are some massive warning signs of failure. Wait and see.

It is not a game, just a development sandbox to try things out for 'make believe'. If you are keen to report bugs, that might be your bag too.

I would wait for SC Alpha 3.0 if you want to see any potential for it as game. It is considerable time away...so at this point no, it is not worth it atm.

Wait for a free fly and try it first. There will be plenty of time between now release so I don't see a reason at this point to jump in.

There is a small chance the whole thing could implode as well so there is more risk than reward at the moment.

(It may not implode but they are a long way from the promised vision).

Wait for the next free-fly (or free-walk, or free-phase-through-doors, or...) week, should be soon, you will be able to test the game for free.

Lots of videos online as well. Streams are the best cause they are in edited. The free fly will give you that gameplay feel which is important...right now it plays sloppy for me so that alone is a detractor. Not sure how 2.6 has fixed this but it's not worth the storage on my ssd currently.

I'm in a waiting to see holding pattern...but free fly would give you the best course of action for based on your own experience.

There is nothing to lose by waiting until it's finished, and nothing to gain by getting in early. As mentioned above, do a free trial and see what you think. I backed for a modest amount during the Kickstarter, but after witnessing their continuing litany of failure over the last few years they won't see another penny from me until I see a finished game.

On costs, if you were interested:
They have recent history also of selling access to ships for cheaper than originally promised. The basic game price is IMO unlikely to change though.

On this front I suggest that you should wait as well - you gain nothing by buying in early. Chances are the unplayability of current builds will disillusion you, if the development itself isn't going to be doing that already.

You should wait for 3.0 - apparently this is people's dream game where you can fulfil all your Star Trek fantasies with an NPC crew on a fleet of ships exploring the known galaxy.

Squadron42's first episode should launch in early next year - 30 missions of movie/shooty or something - we're no longer quite sure what it is, but it's how you should start SC as it will determine your starting status/position. Or is that just the prelude and there are 3 episodes after that? It's become confusing. It's got famous people in it though so it's definitely good.

However currently going in/out of doors or your ship, or sometimes even staircases can result in random death or being flung off to die in the vastness of space like a miserable swine so either Sq42 won't require you to do any of that or it might be quite a wait.
