The Star Citizen Thread v5

I do actually hope that the Aliens will at least bring some new Principles to Combat. So we get some Changes on this at least.
This Game seriously needs to get some more Variations on Combat.

From all systems in ED you think it is combat that lacks variation? Are you serious? There is a plethora of options. It's the other systems that need some attention.
Trading is still like at release 1.0, nothing changed, and it's ridiculous without using third party apps. Just to give one example.

Star Citizen subreddit reacts to the first encounter. Interesting comments.

I gotta say, that looked amazing. Major props to the Frontier devs who made that.
Yep, I give E:D a lot of crap but they nailed this experience. It really feels like a truly alien encounter.
I hope that CIG try to go a bit further with their designs of the non-human factions instead of the humanoid, animal archetype thing.
Yeah, none of the 'aliens' in SC actually feel like aliens, they're just variations of different human cultures instead.
I hope they nail first contact with something no one knows a thing about.
As I drift through deep space admiring the billions of stars from the bridge of a Carrack, I want to discover something that leaves me with only one possible question....
What the hell is that?
Damn, every time I see a video of E:D I get so jealous of their sound design... I dunno how else to describe it but simply sick, it's awe inspiring, awesome, amazing.
As for Thargoids, seems like a big reveal! I have no idea what kind of implications it has on the gameplay though, all the teasers and parts so far were just vague hints of their existence, right? Nothing really substantial.
Yeah i actually find their sound design better than SC although SC i guess is still constantly being updated. I just really hate the ship sounds in SC. Fighter jets of the modern day sound more powerful than SC's space ships.
ED's sound design blows SC out of the water. I'm sure SC will improve somewhat in that regard, but honestly I don't think it'll ever match ED unless SC makes some drastic changes to how it's approaching audio. It's been years, and audio has been pretty consistently meh/bad.

And I tend to give things a Chance :p
I simply dislike it that in this Topic. Tons of People keep up Doom Talking the Project before its even on the Table ^^

Sure I still have small hope, that SC can make to the table, but looking at current project state, design choices and lack of planning (endless refactorings) I do not expect great game, in best scenario maybe Ok game, with lot of bugs, bad fps in PU and a lot of missing features...
About 140m, well looks like CR is great saleman that can basically sell dreams to backers, that after each passing year looks like is more and more impossible to actually deliver...

Quod erat demonstrandum. 5/6y in and the table isn't even mounted yet.

You shouldn't doubt SC's chances of making it to the table, until it's on the table. Hmm.

At this stage, it seems more reasonable to doubt SC's chances of differentiating between a table and a stove, and to expect to find it slumped over and burned to a crisp from a failed attempt at making a cup of tea.

The Mad Hatter's tea party comes to mind. [wacko]

Well hey, tea is a tricky thing to make.

Depends on who you ask really. I would simply throw some herbs into boiling water and let it stew for a few minutes but I assume an english man would stare at me in disgust watching as I BUTCHER something very special :p

Sounds fine, as long as the water is freshly boiled (not merely hot) and any milk is added after said herbs/leaves are removed.

You have no idea how much some of my countrymen/women disappoint me.

SunLeader, i think that's a crux with legends - they are getting better each time to tell them.

Except it is not true and that didn't happen at all. What happened Chris got carried away, and not because of Star Citizen. It has been always a side project to him. All his dreams has been tied into Squadron 42. So there was already some disappointment and grunting between players in 2014. Cultists carried away and took to forums to "ask our dear leader to carry on and make game bigger". There was no official consensus or any such confirmation taken place, nor there were promises.

Agreed in principle, but what CR dreams of is movies. The Wing Commander games were an early attempt to do the movies-as-games thing. He seemed to do OK as long as someone was looking over his shoulder and making sure that he kept things tight. When he's been CEO things haven't worked well.

FWIW the original Star Citizen pitch was something like this. However, as he was at the helm this time we can see how things have gone. The SC superfans don't seem to admit this...

Well on that I would say Taking Money is Fine.
I would simply have made a Clear Cut.

Saying these Stretch Goals up to lets say 10 Million are what we will Aim for to be in the Release.
And these Stretch Goals beyond 10 Million will be stuff we will Start Working on AFTER the Game has been Released.

Money for these can still be taken.
And the Players for Pledging Money to a Future Project could still get some Stuff in the Base Game.
But the Additional Content would not take up an Work Schedule yet. And would be Officially known to be stuff that WILL Come.
But that will only come Years after the Game is already out :)

I assume they would have gotten less Money then anyways.
But the Importand bit is. That they would have had a Limit in place as to how far the Project can Grow before being Released. Thus being able to keep Schedules at least to an Degree. And not ending up with an Schedule of an 500k Project for an 100 Million Project.

Responding to this as is your responded to Eagleboy.

I agree with you. If CR had hit his original target and then either stopped taking money, or at the bare minimum stopped adding stretch goals, then the game as originally visualised may well have been released already, but built by a much smaller team and without all of the Hollywood trappings.

As I mentioned above CR wants to essentially make movies so, well, here we are. Hollywood trappings seem to be all, but with the added fun of appearing to be badly managed: insane amount of top dollar mocap, bloated script, expensive stars, continual re-shoots.

You really come across as very heavily invested in Star Citizen but I hope that you see that the problems us skeptics are pointing at are a direct result of this whole basic issue. :)

Actually, here's an idea... Let me provide you with a list of films that would make for a more accurate comparison with Star Citizen than your ham fisted attempt to shoe horn Chris Roberts together with George Lucas.... Ishtar,The Adventures Of Baron Munchhausen, The Adventures Of Pluto Nash, The Adventures Of Rocky & Bulwinkle, Cutthroat Island (a rarity in this list, the film was actually good, but came out before the Depp-inspired revival of swashbuckling pirate movies. It also completely sunk the studio that produced it.), Catwoman, Heaven's Gate..... I could go on but I'll leave it at that.

You missed a doozy: Wing Commander ;)

This just shows again, they have zero planning ahead...backer money well spend again..

Elite ships:
1) has great cockpit views.
2) has Good UI
3) are multicrew ready
4) are VR ready
5) are space legs ready

= zero refactoring needed

The only issue I remember was that some ships (Sidewinder and Eagle maybe?) needed longer legs when the buggy, sorry...SRV arrived in the game because they were too close to the ground and it couldn't drive away.

They're right on one thing - ED's sound is brilliant.

And if I remember correctly, it'd didn't involve anybody at FDev going out to the community and trying to damage control like amateurs why they had to make the change.... like a certain PR and programming "expert" at CIG did so much when the controversy about one of the ships having two seats or one seat was raging awhile back.

That's because FDev told folks about the changes in good time and explained what they had to do carefully, so that players understood the issue.

But no, CIG just "know" what they are doing and are on course to releasing the best damned game to ever be seen in history!

buy an Idris!

I didn't want our dear Elite hatin', Star Citizen loving commenter to do something drastic... like jump off a bridge or something, if he saw the sainted Chris' own movie in amongst the worst box office bombs...

If SC had of stopped selling ships and new concepts the money would have stopped coming...Ben L answered why they needed to keep funding despite being "funded" and his response to that was to show banks/creditor a revenue stream (not sure why this was important...but according to him it is)...that is why he said they continued funding. This was back when he seemed to have a more prominent role vs what he has become now...maybe due to him not being in front of camera as much. Or calling some
Cutlass thread backers toxic dinks (CR couldn't even believe his boy Ben was capable of such ...disrespect to payingbbackers).

The money kept coming on because new shiny things kept being pitched. With even bigger and badder promises than their predecessors.

You keep selling stuff plus dreams of what said stuff can do than people will continue to buy. It has absolutely nothing to do with a vote. CR doesn't run a democracy, it's a dictatorship where he assumes 100% of the responsibility and retains 100% control.

Why did they shoot all the mo cap for a single player campaign who's gameplay hasn't been locked down. How do you write a story for gameplay that doesn't exist or even know it can exist?

Why did they in 2015 say they were going to focus all attention to 42, and why did CR disappear for 4 months to direct mo cap for a gameplay that's not off the paper it's written on?

all that assumed focus on 42 and they couldn't even give us a small teaser to show progress is being made. Oh ya and before that they didn't want to talk about 42 because spoilers.

Narrative changes and logic bombs everywhere...I've worked for people who promise the world and can't deliver...it's infuriating. (On a show now where this is happening)

I've also worked on shows where the individual is so brilliant everything they say comes out better than they said it.

But that's probably the case with most professions/management.
