Nitpicking: Heart of Darkness takes place in Africa, the Vietnam setting was just for Apocalypse now.

Ahh, thanks for the correction there. :)

I didn't realise that this was supposed to be a bad thing? But then again I do get my kicks from deliberately rolling my SRV down cliffs. And none of those namby pamby options to alleviate VR sickness neither.

That's because Elite Dangerous was designed with VR in mind from the very beginning, so even if you do something crazy awesome like throwing your SRV off a 4 km high cliff on a low-grav world, it's not going to be so jarring to your eyes and brain that you need to evacuate your stomach via your mouth.

Star Citizen has NOT been designed with VR in mind.... and no amount of theory-crafting from the resident CIG Power Positive Crew about how Chris can just "flip a switch" and have VR up and running in a snap (especially since most of the talent who knew their stuff regarding VR have left CIG already and have *not* been readily replaced), is going to make the canned character animations, combined with these haphazard camera movements any less nauseating.

Oh, so in other words the initial plot of Squadron 42 is, as is the Chris Roberts MO, a shameless hack job of the novel Heart Of Darkness, which was the inspiration for Apocalypse Now, mixed in with a side of Battlestar Galactica (the original bad 1970's hackneyed sci-fi version at that, not the thoroughly improved updated version from a decade ago) and even with a hint of his own Wing Commander movie too....

It.

Will.

Be.

TERRIBLE!

Well, if you're going to nick a story make sure it's at least a century old...

Nope, you're going to have to sit there as I tell you that og Battlestar Galactica was pants, even more so as time has gone by.

Just like the 1970's Buck Rodgers, it tried to ride the coat tails of that surprise hit from virtually unknown director at the time George Lucas, Star Wars. And just like that Buck Rodgers re-imaging, it was full of the sci-fi cliches that had dogged the genre for decades up until Star Wars flipped the script so dramatically. And it's attempts to shoehorn SW-like characters and moments into the story only ended up looking all sorts of jarring and out of place because of it.

Don't get me wrong, as a young child growing up watching the show, I liked it. I even had a Cylon attack fighter toy which I used to play with almost as much as my Star Wars toys, but boy Battlestar Galactica has dated *badly*, whilst Star Wars is a timeless classic because it didn't stick to many of the standard templates expected of a sci -fi film... like not having a disco based soundtrack (which was originally planned but thankfully scrapped) and the like.

Sorry, but the updated version of Galactica is far, far superior.

Anyways, back to Star Citizen chat. ^__^

It's great fun :D Such swashbuckling nonsense is exactly what I hoped for from Sq42. Of course that won't translate into a PU full of empire building madmen with countless hours to waste and thousands of dollars worth of ship expecting people to work for them and collect their scraps until they can afford a decent ship too so my interest in that was always atom-thick

But essentially he's right - while fun the old BG was just silly fun. The first few series of the new version were just spectacular stuff and some of the most impactful telly I've seen, even if it did tail out into "erm-ah-dunno-weird-stuff!" at the end

Whatevs, more power to em, I guess. I'll be having the most fun in a light fighter. Hopefully, I can make it stealthy. That way I can sneak on to those whale ships and steal whatever ain't tied down :D

Crime and punishment system(s) in Star Citizen and how CIG will (not) handle them: Discuss.

I didn't see anyone here say anything bad about Buck Rogers.

I'm old enough for the nostalgia of the original Battlestar Galactica and I can see that the remake was much better.

If you saw my comment above, I also slammed 1970's Buck Rodgers as well. :)

Can you imagine the size of strop they're going to throw? There'll be DNA based locks on all ships very soon after the PU opens up I reckon - should be great watching the fallout :D

Who needs locks when you have a laser cutter?

Though, realistically, I doubt we will able to breach the hull.

I expect light fighter gank squads will be making big ship captains wish they'd stayed in the hangar.

I think there are certain types of people that take a dim view of it, that is all.

Sort of back on topic (go to 2:14) :

$500-600 is the price of 10 full AAA games. I spent an extra £15 on ED and got early access a bonus ship and some exclusive skins. I don't understand how anyone can look at SC's prices and not immediately think "SCAM". Games are simply not worth that much (even good ones).

That's the case when think of a normal AAA game, however it's not that much when you start talking about MMO games. Especially those that are subscription based. Compare to EVE which is $210/yr. I bought a lifetime pass to STO for $300 in 2010. Back in 2012/2013 we were expecting to start to play Star Citizen the MMO from 2015 - 2020 or more. So $500 - $600 up front to get off the ground running on a game we planned to play for years to come...

Star Wars flipped the script? Some rebels save a goody-goody princess dressed in white from an evil-king-with-evil-voice dressed in black? With smooth strings orchestrated beneath it? Its not just a cliche sci-fi film, its a cliche-film in general. :p
