So, not much to report on 2.6.1 patch then? LOL.

Off topic, but been totally absorbed by the Ancient Ruins thing in Elite - which has had it's issues, but still, it's been a nerd's paradise for me this past few weeks.

Well, to be fair, SC fans dont expect any major Happy News before 3.0. For the coming period it's gonna be minor bugfixing and waiting for news. We'll probably get some promises during ConSeason, but then we have to wait till Q4 to see what actually happened this year.

That's the same sweeping statement as "they shouldn't have gone for CryEngine". Crowdfunding worked for Elite, but it also lead to an expanded early access game to ensure continued development, not a traditional closed "AAA" production that instead feeds on hopes and dreams. Aka, expanded crowdfunding rather than early access.
Crowdfunding worked for Elite in the sense that it proved there was an audience for the game. The amount that Frontier raised was only something like 1/8 of the total expenditure on the first release, and even being beholden to those original backers was a significant burden (e.g. the offline debacle, the DDF expectations, etc.). The rest they raised through their IPO and other means. Frontier's executive team had a lot to lose if Elite turned out to be a critical failure. The difference with CIG is that they *don't* and I think that their decision-making reflects that. Everything is bought and paid for through crowdfunding, and if the project ends up failing, the only damage that their executive team will take is a hit to their pride and perhaps their reputation. It's the backers and employees who lose.

I don't think that a project the size and scope of SC / SQ42 will ever be viewed as a critical success in the context of being crowdfunded, as it'll ultimately be judged by how closely it met its stated goals (and unless some sort of miracle occurs, it'll miss by a long way). It doesn't matter if there's a good game at the end of it. If it's not what was sold there'll be a backlash.

By who tho?

You think the backers who currently are hard at work to intentionally NOT see the problems and are willing to justify any delay, any change, any lie with kumbajas while continuing to throw sick amounts of money at this thing will suddenly ADMIT they were wrong and it has been THEM being the stupid SOBs who ve been taken advantage of? Watching them I somehow doubt they ll be big enough to do this. If the game is a complete failure its going to be Derek Smart and his drones who are at fault. If theres anything slightly resembling a game at the end, regardless how buggy or different from the original concept it might be....its going to be the BDSSE. Even now these people claim the buggy and barebone tech-demo is already better then most games out there.

It already is an "us versus them" scenario. If Star Citizen ever releases and the rest of the world judges it at a bare minimum its going to stay that scenario.

Same as with NMS. People can be viciously defending a game right up to release, and then finally realizing what everyone else saw coming years earlier. If there is one constant in super-fans its that they are passionate, not that they will always be passionately supporting the product. Remember the piles of death threats HG got when they delayed the game six months? What do you think will happen when those who sacrificed insane amounts of money, time, energy and sometimes even relationships and such realize they have been duped?

Of particular interest are pages 16, 20, 21, and 26.

Is Roberts now slowly shifting his business into this?

What is going on here?

It's either Time Warner after a name change or one of their sibsidiaries, not sure which, Roberts/CIG were in one of their ads some time ago. Similiar names are, I think, just a coincidence.

Wikipedia suggests Charter Communications.

I don't know though, maybe they have bought an ISP for commandos - I mean, it was either that or invent delta patching, right? :D

But that's already a noticeable difference, because when CIG announce delays (or, more commonly, things just are delayed or MIA with no explanation) the superfans don't post death threats, they just shrug and tell them to take all the time they need. And the insane amount of "investment" might not result in a bigger backlash, so much as cause those people to double down on their belief in the final product, as MTBFritz says. The people who took up their pitchforks against HG had no more than a $60 pre-order on the line, so potential humiliation was much less of a factor than it is for those who have ploughed tens of thousands of dollars into SC.

I think the question is more whether the slow shift in attitude that we've already seen since CitizenCon continues to the point that there's no one left who believes in CIG's nonsense claims by the time the MVP appears. If it does, and there's plenty of time, there won't be a backlash, because won't be anyone left who didn't see it coming. Maybe that's what Roberts is counting on.

Spectrum = Time Warner Cable + Brighthouse Networks + Charter Communications

Source: I contract for Charter over the last two or so years.

I believe California was TWC country. Anyway, news to me...I even work on order management and provisioning software for Spectrum Business and Enterprise.

I think this might even be a targeted ad for California...are the other people in the video California based?

You have to remember that the SC faithful are a vocal minority. The majority of backers are likely to be in at the lower levels, and won't necessarily be following the project with the same level of fervour or scrutiny as that vocal minority. These are the people who *aren't* responsible for the majority of the funding, but who will have quite a loud voice once the game is released. Those people aren't going to be interested in excuses like "it was Derek's fault" and those who defend the game with the same fervour as they do now will be coined white knights.

...He was lying. Plain and simple. Just like all the other times before that.

That's possibly a tinsy bit harsh.

He could simply be so incompetent that he really doesn't know, and the fact that CIG only seemed to realise they needed a plan for 3.0 at the end of the month CR routinely gave for 'delivery' doesn't suggest a high level of competence.

Or he could just be fully delusional and so really believes his own narrative.

I'm not saying these alternatives are much more palatable, but.....

Still, as a cheery aside, didn't they say that after a January spent planning they'd have a firm date for 3.0, or is this another one of their mutable deliveries?

Oh, so your avatar is relevant and you really work for a gigantic evil empire? (j/k)

By the way, there's a free-fly week, or to be exact, "Valentine's Day Multi-Crew Free Fly".

As far as evil empires go, Spectrum isn't the worst, leave that to Comcast. :D

In other news, a salesperson from AT&T came to my door last night offering gigabit internet...I'm thinking the Empire might lose one of their own as customer...ooops

(though the network underground is totally ready for gigabit, the last mile or the copper from fiber box to home is usually where all the problems are. Charter/Spectrum has miles of unused fiber underneath the city)
