"The great debate that tore the space sim community apart in 2000 was the fact that Freelancer didn’t let you use the joystick AT ALL. You moved your ship around as though it were a cursor and the guns fired for you in the direction you wanted. When the question came up early in the campaign, the answer was obvious: that’s not what we’re going for."

Yet what they've created is as you said "merely have the ship follow the mouse".

We envisioned Star Citizen giving you back full joystick control, as in Wing Commander… and we’ve been working towards that ever since. That doesn’t mean taking mouse control out (plenty of people played Wing Commander with the mouse) and it doesn’t mean removing gimbaled weapons (which have been in the spec since we launched.) But it does mean balancing those things so they don’t have a universal upper hand, which is what we’re working on now.

You could have added a bit more.

They want controllers to work, stick, mouse or other.

Make your mind up.

AFAIK performance capture by actors for SQ42 was done but not performance capture for INTERACTIONS like Star Marine and other smaller issues.

Don't worry about the expense of that, they are going to build their own mo-cap studio that will also be rented out to make money for the project so they won't have to repeatedly use the MOST EXPENSIVE MO-CAP FACILITY ON THE PLANET.

Oh wait.

The panel went on as planned. It was a live Q&A session for those in attendance, and seemed to go over well.
What they're talking about for the livestream was a short 1 on 1 piece, and it encountered a scheduling issue.
Nothing was canceled. We're hoping to appear tomorrow. =)

Hopefully they don't have a scheduling issue tomorrow as well...

The CIG version of revisionist history. "nothing was canceled"

"Canceled because of unforeseen circumstances, will try to "drag them down and get them on the stream for tomorrow"

A whole blog created as an opinion piece to counter a blog created as an opinion piece.

Please somebody make a new blog to counter this opinion.

The problem is when you get this far down the rabbit hole, the reader is fully aware of all of the circumstances and players involved, and has already formed their opinion. So it's just echo chamber fodder. They are doing a fantastic job in adding even more notoriety to DS's original work.

Wrong, Stig. That's what you said.
Like I said a crappy freelancer style control system "merely have the ship follow the mouse".

I said this:
Should the ship NOT follow the mouse? (This sets aside the point that you don't get 6DOF with a mouse in the first place. So you're already limiting yourself. That's not the game's limitation.)

I'm interpreting YOUR description. I pointed out quite clearly that using a mouse is limiting what the ship is capable, compared to a stick user. I didn't say "the ship merely follows the mouse".

Why can't you discuss what I actually said, instead of rephrasing it into something I didn't? You're trying to win an argument I haven't even made.

Why this 'best space sim ever' jokes keep popping up? Because they can't be serious. You don't make best space game ever. You try to make very good game which just works first.

I got 143 Million problems but DS ain't one

If you got DS problems I feel bad for you, son...

Nope:

Happy Hour: February 17th, 2017

 • The Squadron 42 Script is hovering around 1200 pages and is still being tweaked.

If the script isn't done, the performance capture isn't done. And we all know how Roberts loves coming up with excuses to get back into the director's chair.

This is actually not really clear.

Performance capture to SQ42 does not have to mean any kind of large changes or even actors called in to make extra roles. It can simply be performance capture for 3d movement of character bodies or smaller actions.
So it can be anything from an actor actually ACTING full performance to an extra doing bodily actions and performances for NPC and other character movement.

So it's PROBABLY not they reshooting scenes with Mark Hamill having to go back and remake the scenes with John-Rys Davies.

Yup. As I've always said, they're the worst thing that could ever happen to this project. Not even croberts could have caused as much PR damage as they have.

Well, the problem is that capturing the performance is merely the very first step in the pipeline for getting the animations into the game. There's a hell of a lot of work involved in cleaning up that data so that it is actually usable.

The CIG animation team have years of work ahead of them just to process the (supposedly) huge amount of mocap data shot.

Cleaning the coffee off my screen, ATM!
Can't rep you any more!

Will folks like Snarfbuckle, Thorn and Orlando put their money where their mouths are and pay more to keep the project alive?
Say CR decides that it's going to be a MVP, will they still play it?

Just curious.
