What's with all the guys using female avatars?

Makes sense to me that a guy is perfectly happy watching the butt of a female character rather than watching the butt of a male character.
[haha]

You know, when you put it like that... I'd frown heavily on any straight male, that prefers looking for hours at the butt of a burly dude, than that of a round curvaceous female one..

I've never understood why people find it strange that some straight guys like to create female avatars.

They are straight guys so why would they want to spend their gaming time looking at a male character? This is especially true when playing a third person game. Makes sense to me that a guy is perfectly happy watching the butt of a female character rather than watching the butt of a male character.

Whilst some people claim to be confused about this issue, I have to wonder if they might actually in truth be confused about something else entirely... :D [haha]

Haha! Thats quite a controversial post for you mr Ant.

Exactly!! :)

At least I assume they are guys, with cmdr names like John, James etc.
All the male characters look the same to me, especially when I open the comms tab.

Hair style is also very limited and nothing like what I'd be using so I decided to make a female character, at least I'll be staring at this cute girl instead of some random guy that will never look like me.

What Mr Ant said...

Uhh, b/c they can.

My current playthough of Skyrim features a female wood elf cutthroat.

I played Morrowind three times, Nord male, Nord female and Breton male, just for variety. Oblivion was only played once but that was a female character. Skyrim was three times, all male.

BTW, for the Nord female in Morrowind, when given an allowance by the spymaster, she followed her "feminine instincts". Although told to use the money to buy better equipment, etc, she went and bought some nice dresses, shoes, etc. True story.

My Oblivion play through was here: http://eldorf.tripod.com/Shakula/Shakula001.html
I managed to link the character as a child to my Eldorf story. Didn't intend for that to happen but I remembered having that screen shot so I decided to use it. Trick was that in the original screen shot, the child had the same windbraids that was offered as a hair option in Oblivion.

Do I have to worry?

I am a straight guy, too. However, I've re-created myself in Holo-Me (at least I tried) as a male and added some nice eyeshade cosmetics to the result ...:p

Great point, OA. This is exactly why I listen to what my kids refer to as "girl pop" with artists such as Shakira and Beyonce....they put me in the right emotional frame of mind. As a construction worker often found driving a 1 ton diesel truck covered with extension ladders and pulling a trailer loaded with equipment, you can imagine the ribbing I take:)

In my head, I read this post in your voice. I think you're absolutely right, except that the game doesn't ever really show the character to the player, unless you play with the camera. It's not like Tomb Raider where the whole thing is shot in the third person, and you spend a lot of time looking at Lara Croft's aft section.

For my part, at some point, I changed the VR "player avatar gender" setting to female because I thought the male one looked kind of effeminate, and wanted to see what the difference was. Then I got lazy and never felt like restarting the game to change it back, and eventually just decided that my character is a woman, and made up a (cursory) backstory about who she is, since she's clearly different from me.

Lara Croft's aft section has been nerfed in the latest games, sadly... variety is the spice as they say... sometimes I use a male avatar and sometimes a female. It's no big deal.

@dusty.

Your "I love watching her" made me laugh over my coffee.... it's innocent and creepy at the same time!

For me it's an old habit, from the days when in 1st person shooters games female characters were usually smaller targets and more difficult to hit!

I still remember when you could make Lara do a handstand...basically, that's why I never completed the adventure, too busy performing gymnastics. Ah, those were the good 'ol days, weren't they?

It is overall a pixel character.....in many games you control female avatars or male avatars. I do play a male soldier in BF because i can't choose female soldiers.
Doesn't really bother me if guys using girl characters.
The truth behind is, everyone wants to be dominated by us :p

I think 90% of my time on Skyrim was actually a lone female elf + bow / dual shortswords. There was something that just 'felt right' about that.

My other character was a male mage / wizard type that went to the wizard school, and had companions of both genders. I personally prefer female 'heroes' as it does go against the usual cliche... but in itself probably creates an internet cliche of all guys playing females lol...

I don't know. I don't think it's odd in any case. My colleague is a rather attractive girl gamer, and she always prefers playing male characters.. it works both ways, tbh.

Bruce Jenner maybe???? Seriously but, I think it comes from people having body image insecurities mostly. Usually then they say "if your looking at a male you must be gay" to shame you, so that it makes them feel better. It's not really a issue generally anyway. Role-playing as someone other then yourself, is what video games is all about.
