"White knights" - come out come out wherever you are!

Calling someone white knight / fanboy / apologist is just a way to dismiss someones opinion when you confuse your own opinion with a fact.
An apology in a debate is a rational defense, as in The Apology of Socrates. It is not a dismissive term, nor derogatory. At least I use it to distinguish different positions and attitudes, not necessarily individuals.

In another forum --------> thataway, I was accused of being, and I quote, a 'destroyer of Western Civilisation' for daring to suggest that 'marriage' didn't have to be between a man and a woman.

I'm thinking of having some t-shirts made.

Ha, that sounds like one impressive Steam Achievement!

The two head white knights made an appearance in the first 2 pages of this thread. Thats a huge success in my book.

Name names, o Keeper.

These two heads...do they have a command structure or are they just part of an autonomous collective?

How about: Person who disagrees with my criticism of the game and uses too many good arguments...
No, White Knight refers to when the defense is done using bad arguments. Although I agree it is annoying when the term is used to have it both ways; to knowledge their argument will be objected, while undermining incoming objections before hand. However, when the arguments are good, the discussion is a lot of fun.

Many around here are using this thread as a chance to gang up and pretend their arguments are always right in the face of being called a White Knight. They are just leaning towards the other extreme.

Can you name one post where someone said they are always right? Dont even have to be 'many'.

Hi. I think that FDev aren't a bunch of money-grubbing leaches and who do, actually, want to make a great game and foster a great community around it.

So that probably makes me a White Knight.

But better that than a cynical hater.

I agree with your sentiment, but I don't think that makes you a white knight, just not a cynical hater ;)

To give this thread any chance of being productive, we might need to define "white knight".

How about: Person who disagrees with my criticism of the game and uses too many good arguments, so counter arguments are hard to come by and are therefor replaced by using the Ad Hominem "White Knight"

There is an existing, simple definition. A White Knight defends the indefensible. This is fairly objective & easy to remember.

But isnt the problem that people disagree on what is indefensible? Sounds a bit... circular.

"This is indefensible!"
"No it is not."
"See, you are a white knight!"

Exactly. So no one thinks they are a white knight, even if it is evident to the wider community sleutelbos.

Tbh, OP, considering how common threads on this forum start with:

"I have a complaint about this game's flaws"

And result in a plethora of comments that essentially boil down to:

"OP, you're doing it wrong"

I feel the claims by some about rampant "white knighting" on here are often valid.

At the same time, however, I don't feel anyone should be offended by being called a "white knight". Of all the derogatory terms used on the internet today, "white knight", is clearly one of the more complimentary ones.

To some, in here claiming there are no white knights on this forum, I say pay closer attention. As I've seen thread posters outright attacked by their post history for writing a new thread to complain/discuss an apparent flaw with the game.

If you regularly go into threads about complaints against the game and sensibly express your own opinions to the OP, whilst acknowledging his misgivings (you don't have to agree with them), then you're clearly not a white knight and shouldn't take any offense at the term.

On the othehand, if you're one of the those who will go into a thread about an OP complaining about the game, and then proceed to dump on the OP, based on either his post history or your elitist perception that the OP is some ADHD-ridden, low attention span, millenial who has been groomed on COD all his gaming life and therefore isn't qualified to criticise ED, then you are the very worst kind of white knight and a contributor to the toxicity of this community.

Right. So whomever disagrees with your perception of 'the wider community' (is that the new silent majority btw?) is a white knight. Ok, in that sense I am also white knighting Darwinian evolution and the existence of facts, regardless of what the 'wider community' thinks of it. Personally I like discussions to be based on logic, facts and the quality of arguments, not based on who is backed by which part of the community. You're confusing 'white knighting' with 'agreeing with the majority', and assuming 'majority' is what you think it is without having any actual facts to support them.

Have you examples of this? I'd like to see the evidence of what you say. Because it's all very nebulous.

It's amazing who claims to be speaking for 'the community'.

I don't even speak for the other pigs!

Go figure. Somewhere else I've been accused of being mentally ill for suggesting the opposite.

It's an unfortunate circumstance brought about by people who want to replace their real life with a video game getting all bent out of shape whenever FD don't jump to their own personal standards, framing their criticism in apocalyptic self-entitled terms. Rather than simply saying what they do/don't like and either putting up with the issues and continue playing or taking a break.

When snarky critics realise that FD are under no obligation to snap to attention the moment they post on the forums, and that ultimately their money entitles them to nothing more than is written in the terms and conditions, the "fanboys" will go away.

Have to spread the love around before I can rep you again Garbarrage!

You should have seen the ABSOLUTE FURORE in the forums of "That other not quite finished space game (TM)" when they swapped the forum engine for a new one.
TOTAL MELTDOWN!!111! The CAPS LETTERS to ACTUAL INFO ratio went literally stratospheric. Bent out of shape? More like tearing themselves to shreds.
It was one of the most ridiculous threads I have ever seen (alleged) adults create. ED is a Polo Club Lounge in comparison.
