Alien ship on ground at barnacle spotted!!!

I'm pretty new to the game, but after reading that it took 3 years to develop ship naming

You were misinformed. It took three years to reach the point where adding in ship naming was desirable to enough people to make the dev time worthwhile. And before anyone says "but that's easy" please don't.

That's a terrible excuse.....

Edit: How many years now has Arma been around? Can add emblems to your aircraft.

I'm pretty new to the game, but after reading that it took 3 years to develop ship naming I'm under no illusions as to the depth of this possible mechanic. Multi crew is lame. Space legs sounds lame. Etc.

The space flight and space ship systems management is what is keeping me here. So hopefully the aliens offer some gameplay depth to this game. If not, then I'll probably head back to flight sims in another couple months.

And yeah, I'm not farming for a cutscene. Scarcity does add value, but I'll just watch YouTube

Remember that it took 2 to 3 years for some of these cynics to develop their ideas in the forums. Don't let their mono-polar opinions affect your sense of what is, and is not good gameplay. If you are relatively new to the game, you have much to discover and enjoy. :)

I figured you were new but you make a valid point. The only selling point of this game is the name and the immersion. The game is beautiful and has an amazing soundtrack. Anything else is just wasted potential.

There's not much to discover that's the thing, exploration is literally one of the most neglected gameplay aspect of the game.

Also, he clearly did his homework and looked at the past 2 years of development.

I don't really get the complaints about the scripted encounters. FD never promised 'alien' gameplay' earlier - and they couldn't really have been in at launch given the in-progress state of the game. It's almost certain it's coming in 2.4.

So the only question is - do they leave the alien encounters out entirely until then, or do they add some low-work-required scripted scenes to give us a hint of what's coming? Personally, I'm happy they're in the game. Something is better than nothing.

Pretty much my feelings. And if people are that jaded by it then they can always cancel their subscri...oh.

and CMDR Pangolin posted video on YouTube ...so cool :)

HAHAHAHA

Okay so I was watching the video and going "hey that's awesome, the JELLYCONE looks like a living thing, look at that it's refuelling, awesome.
And then I was thinking "Geez, I wish this guy would stop talking over his own damn video. And it carried on with me getting more frustrated, what sounded like wristwatch alarms going off, more nonsensical talking, and I think "Geez, shut up already, this is important stuff".

As the video continued I started to hear something that made me suspicious. As the JELLYCONE starts to leave, I think "Wait, is he watching pr0ns in the background?? What's that moaning?! Jeez, this guy is recording something important, and not only will he not stop talking over the video but he's watching pr0n in the background and the audio's getting picked up too!!"

And then the video finished.
And the moaning noises did not.
YIKES, it was a popup window on my computer that was making all the noise! I don't remember opening that!!!

Yet he came to the false conclusion that it took 3 years to develop a name plate. I agree with you that much needs to be done to increase the depth of the game, and I believe FD have now come to that conclusion also. That's encouraging, isn't it?

I play the same game as you, and still find parts that challenge me. I'm deliberately holding off of exploration until new features are added, but it doesn't mean I stop myself from exploring other features while depth is added. The alternative is to diss every new scene that is introduced and become more and more cynical about the game. Or see it as a pointer to something that lies ahead.

I choose to go with the latter, even though I would prefer Thargoid interactions were brought in later, rather than sooner.

Look at all the activity and involvement from the players when given a hint of gameplay and overarching storyline (alien threat, formadyne rift, Salome etc). These events and overarching storylines are simply required. Immersion and sandbox and chart your own path, all of that is positively effected by a large scale story that everyone participates in to some degree.

Even in arma where you can use the mechanics and objects to script an entire campaig storyline for you and your friends, even in that true sandbox there's a single player story and people create storyline objectives for their scripted multiplayer maps.

My vague point here is that the game needs desperately an alien invasion, conflict, drama, difficulty.

Was ship naming present at launch or added in a recent update?

Ship name plates coincided with the new camera. The old camera could have shown them, but I suspect the two are linked. They are more QOL features.

I can think of no better opportunity to post this again than this thread :D.

How is it false, people asked for nameplates as far as early 2014-2015. It took them 2+ years to implement it. I can pull some early statements from Sandro Sammarco stating that they were working on it back in 2015 if you wish or threads like that one : https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70777

He's not wrong.

Sorry, multiple posts, just annoyed.

Look at the generation ships. What an awesome mystery and fun thing to get into.... for about 5 seconds until you realize there's nothing to them other than look at it and listen to some audio. No further goal. No finding some of their crew on a nearby planet and reuinutjng them with the Galaxy. No backstory discovery. Nothing

Entire games/movies are made from expanding on the storyline of an alien virus wiping out a generation ship. But in ED? Nothing.

Frontier seems to be awesome at hinting toward depth, and then purposely avoiding it.

What's your point? That it took three years of coding to implement?

Do you get special awards for white knighting the company? As a consumer I'm demanding more. That's all. Improve the product or lose a customer. It's logical and sane.

Your position however is weird
